Micky van de Ven

He’s being vilified over social media for apparently walking around the training ground saying he doesn’t care as his agent is in discussions about a move to Barcelona.
No actual proof or substance that I have seen to this, and it just doesn’t seem to fit with what we know of his character.
But we’ve just seen an interview where he’s said he is struggling mentally with where things are right now.
How do these rumours help that?

It's spacegoating. We need a pantomime villain to explain our predicament and Micky seems to be it at the moment.

Might be better if we just got behind the players and manager and save the finger pointing for the end of the season.

I half agree and half not - It's easy to pile on someone when the chips are down, and also that we need to get behind the team right now.

What I will say is that I have never been impressed with VDV defensively, it's got nothing to do with recent events. I just don't think he is a very good defender and a lot of the attention he's been getting is because he is making even more mistakes than usual - not just because of spacegoating....

Absolutely. FFS cut the guy some slack. He has brought a lot of good things to us in his time so far. Sure he has room for improvement but who doesn’t and he’s still young.

I think your comments about his defensive abilities are fair enough and that’s a validly reached opinion based on you watching him play.
But that’s not what he is being sc apegoated for. It’s some created WhatsApp message and talk that he’s been dismissing our situation as he’ll be leaving anyway, which doesn’t seem to have any real foundation and (imo) would be out of character. If it’s true then yeah, he’s out of order. But even if true we still need him until the end of the season so vilifying him now is just counterproductive.
Also, I guess sometimes I just don’t want to believe the bad stuff about our players. Naive that I am.

There's a reason why we were able to sign him in the first place: he's got a very specific set of characteristics that made him well-suited for Angeball (until he got injured at least). It would make sense for a team like Barcelona to sign him. He might even do well there, if they continue to play with a very high line.

Unfortunately, just like Ben Davies wouldn't fare well at Barca, VDV lacks some basic defensive skills to thrive in a low block / defensive formation. Regardless of his mental strength, I'm not sure he's what we need right now. As for his future beyond this season, it all depends on whether we finally commit to a manager and stick with him for more than 18 months...

Could not agree more, he is having a poor run but is still fairly young for a CB. Our defense that season has been all over the shop but its a mistake IMO to put the blame on him.

But there is a reason why some think that his performances and mentality seem to be questionable. By all means get behind the team, but you can have a discussion on the internet to discuss your opinions and such.

I think personally that he has checked out but only he knows this. I would not be bothered if we sold him along with more than a few next year for a rebuild regardless of division.

Fair point and i do not really disagree, none of our players are really standing out and playing at their best. But IF some fans are reading into what he has said on Whatsapp [ As Glendas Legs is saying] and using that as a reason to judge him i would wonder how many of them are really serious.

Probably says about them than VDV and their mentality

We don't actually know his character if we are honest. We only have what we perceive of him, not his actual personality.

Im not sure it is, ive seen many a very good player play better than the sum of the clubs parts for decades. He hasn't been very good. Thats just the reality, he is also a member of the senior leadership and shown little to none of that leadership. His sending off was ridiculously naive, Romero as Captain with his was woree, so as senior players thats worth calling out.

Well obviously. That’s why I added “imo” in my initial post on the topic.
Also why I acknowledged my tendency to not want to believe the bad stuff.

TBF He has been playing like a panto actor

I’m not trying to claim that he’s playing well. He’s not. It’s the people assuming he’s not trying, he doesn’t care or he thinks he’s too good for a relegation scrap that tinkle me off. None of us know what is going through his head but this is the lad who we adored, by and large, for two years.

He’s clearly struggling and needs to be supported not turned on by his own fans.

Based on recent performances he should start on the bench against AM behind Danso (CB) and Spence (LB). Hopefully a little reminder that he still needs to fight for his place in the team.

On his day he is very, very good but we haven’t seen that level of performance in a while. Breaking up the Romero-VdV partnership would be a sound message to the squad from Igor that reputations carry little weight versus the performances he sees on the pitch.

Post truth world unfortunately.

Problem is any old brick can be whipped up by any old fudger. Not even Spurs fans. But 'they' know that there'll be brain fudged Spurs fans to lap it up and pick up the baton ....and before you know it the viral spread will lose sight of where it originated or come from.
