Xavi Simons

Don’t think that’s actually true. He didn’t want to come to Spurs until other moves broke down late in the window.
So he didn't want to come and he wasn't whom we were initially or even secondarily looking at. Makes it all the worse, again even though I personally rate the player (but not his overall spell at Spurs so far).

According to whoscored he has played about a third of his games out wide.

Good AMs should have transferable skills to play a starting wide position, moving into the central areas - some of his best football has come off the left for us, albeit slim pickings in that regard.

I saw plenty of him pre Spurs, and it's never been his position - at best 'can do a job there'.

Point is, he's a young guy arriving in the toughest league to adapt to physically to in his first season and on top of that not playing him positionally where he is strongest just compounds things.

Either play him centrally or not at all, Tel is a better bet on the left.....

He was playing Left Attacking Mid for RB in a 3421.

But this is over stated anyway. Who was playing left wing under Poch before Son got in to the team?

No I am not saying that. For one we don’t know where he was on the list of targets and it what order that’s pure speculation.

They will have been enquiries made for multiple players during the summer and they would primarily target those who want to come. Eze is as different to MGW as Xavi is in terms of key attributes.

Are you suggesting that when the MGW & Eze deal fell through and Paz was a no go, you would have just not signed anyone? If not who is the alternative target?

He played both LW and AM and he looked better centrally, last seasons positions below on the right hand side. Cant screenshot the whole season but you get the picture:

He can do a job there, but don't see it as his position in this team when there is no one to link with - it is no wonder he looks out of sorts, there is naff all movement and players he can be intricate with.

If Madders and Kulu were around the it would likely work better.....

That’s just an over simplication of how these sites lay out the data.

Who did Poch play LW before Son became a first team regular? These games are a week apart.

It's not an over simplication, it supports what I've seen with my own eyes - I've watched him plenty of times in Germany and he plays central more from what I've seen and is better there. Just like he has been more effective centrally for us here with more goals and assists from that position.

With the players we have available it is pointless him playing on the left, you won't get the best of him. What point you're trying to prove with those Poch lineups I have no idea, but the point is there are a load of technical footballers there which Simons doesn't have to play off now so it's a pointless comparison....

My point from the very beginning was that in a team which is performing well the difference between a player that’s classed as an Attacking Midfielder and a Left Winger who cuts in is very little. In this current Spurs squad with the injuries he should be the #10. But in a functioning team that could have Kudus, Kulusevski, Maddison back playing it won’t be an issue if he is technically the left of whichever 3 is behind the forward.

Pochetinos team is used as the example because from 2015-2019 is proof of that because he played both Eriksen and Alli in a front 3 behind Kane, with either Lamela on the right or Son on the left and nobody could tell you which of Alli or Eriksen was the AM or the WF in that system. Same is if I click on Xavi from last season in a game where he is listed as an AM he is part of what’s listed as a 3421 formation and he is one of the 2x AM’s behind.

Can get on board with that. Just don't think he's as good on the left as he is centrally, especially when isolated out there with no other ball players to link with. Like I said, if Madders and Kulu were around then could certainly work better but they aren't.

So as my point was originally, either play him centrally or not at all with the current players at our disposal. If you disagree fair enough....

I wouldn’t go that far seeing as we only have a dozen fit players but I agree he should be central. This would be my team Thursday.

Vicario (want Kinsky but being realistic)
Porro Danso VDV Souza
Sarr Palhinha
Tel Xavi Richy
Solanke

No I'm not saying we shouldn't have gone for anyone. Simmons is actually the player of the primary 3 that I liked the most pre any transfer speculation. What I am saying though is that he does not appear to have been our primary choice so as you say he is very different from the other two and so therefore whatever plans we had intended for MGW don't then translate to Simons. Which for me explains how he was used initially or not used really. There didn't seem to be an actual plan for him which makes sense because he's the guy we got in the end rather than the guy we actually wanted regardless of my personal preferences.

I think that was only based on him not being interested earlier in the window.

He is different to MGW & Eze. But those 2 are also different to one another is my point.
