Transfer thread

Why do I feel that the whole season rides on tomorrow night and certain progression to the next round of the CL.
Win and signings will happen, lose and Frank is gone.

How about Sadio Mané? Great player in his pomp and he still looked pretty decent for Senegal. Getting on a bit now, so probably wouldn't break the bank. Or has he been too long in carpet slippers for a return to the Prem?

I’m actually happy to see how the window finishes before making any final judgements myself, it doesn’t look great though and had Levy been in charge you and others would be absolutely losing your brick right now! Since moving in to the stadium Levy had 1 window with a zero net spend and that was in the peak of Covid. So these guys need to have a decent last week just to match Levy in that regard, considering not spending was a stick to beat him with and a new chairman would clearly do better…

Re the manager, the comparisons to Ange’s time have been done to death, he obviously sacked off the league for Europe in the 2nd half of the season, Frank clearly isn’t and he’s playing “his” best sides for the games available, just failing miserably. If you don’t agree with this assessment it’s fine with me.

My simple point is: whatever is happening now is no different to several previous January windows going back years.
I find it odd that in those previous times there were many preaching patience etc when Levy was at the helm and are totally doing a 180 now he's gone, i.e. having ZERO patience. I'd understand it a bit more if we were in the 2nd or 3rd year post-Levy...

Personally, i believe we are showing the same practices as last year: poor league form, a manager that many would say needed either backing or sacking, plus an injury crisis that brings the squad towards bare-bones levels in some positions.
As i say, i can't believe how anyone can see any major difference to how Spurs are doing things; even compared to last January i can't see much difference (after all, we do have the same owners whether Levy, the previous main figurehead, is here or not).

Let's see how the window pans out, as you say.

I don't know why anyone would be making any real judgements regarding the board on this January window. January is not the best time to bring in players, the ones you really want aren't usually available half way through the season and factor in a fairly high likelihood the board don't think this manager will be in charge for next season there was hardly going to be game changing actions in regards to signings.

The summer window always was going to be the time to truly judge....

Was always going to be the case, partly of their own doing by saying it's all going to be different now and some (majority? Loud minority?) fans have just had enough of ENIC and want change.

Add to the fact we are also in a relegation battle and seemingly haven't done much (yet) isn't helping patience

The obvious danger is that they underestimate the scale of the emergency (perhaps thinking it's just the same as last season). Things may look a lot more precarious come 1 March, by which time it'll be too late to do anything but sack the manager and hope for a dead-cat bounce. Just saying....

Like it or not we still have to make signings that actually improve us rather than just make signings for signings sake. And to do that is extremely difficult 1)because it's a limited market in January 2) We aren't that attractive for players we would want - Your Semenyo/Wharton and whoever? No chance, they know they belong at a top 6 club which right now we aren't and no guarantee we will be anytime soon.

So we have to be smart with signings, it's not as if those clubs around us have bought in a plethora of players we would be desperate to acquire. Of course we would all like some new quality signings, but the point still remains you can't properly judge the boards ambitions until the summer. Literally no club does their main business in this window....

Mate, outside of last year where the bottom 3 sides were already cut lose and dead, and Ange somehow convinced management that we would win Europa (and the clubs desperation to get that monkey off our back was at all time high), this is different, and we have many more years than last year to show pattern under Levy.

Any other year and Frank would have been fired by the Fulham game (in November), and if not, by the Villa Cup exit, incoming manager would have received some squad help (think Conte taking over from Nuno, getting Bentancur & Deki), if there was a plan to keep manager, again some help would be there (think Conte 2nd season, we went all out for Porro, at the time, 2nd most expensive FB in football).

Levy's flaws were when asked to risk the club for upside, he knew how to act when he saw perceived risk

I think it's fairly certain that the current board's plan is to keep the manager, and I suspect the signing of Gallagher, in their eyes, is a show of support. If there is someone out there who would significantly upgrade our ability to score any type of 'unexpected' goals and provide a genuine creative edge (i.e. Cunha/Semenyo etc), and is willing to come to us, I would very much hope we're willing to pay whatever is necessary to get them.

City just got Guehi & Semenyo, we have done Bentancur & Dek, Porro, Dragusin, Kinsky in previous January windows. We needed 2 players that walk into first team, likely in attacking positions and midfield.

100% but Gallagher isn't "backing" him, it's a low risk, opportunistic signing.

There are players out there, Juve want RKM and they have David & Vlahovic (even if GB doesn't rate), Neves is supposedly still available. Personally for me backing the manager would have been (early in Jan), something like agreeing a RKM swap +cash for Vlahovic, sell Richi to Everton buy Ndiaye (same swap +cash) buy Neves, sell Kinsky, loan Tel (manager seems to rate neither), buy a GK with view to sell Vic in summer.

All of that could be less than 70M total, and we could argue about if this player or that, but it shows a possibility. Instead we hijacked someone else's transfer when injuries forced our hand and bought a youth prospect that is unlikely to see game time ..

City aren't our rivals. They are an attractive proposition, we are not. Those you reference we signed in a January window were not when we were sitting14th in the league. It's not easy to attract those players right now....
