Villa sign striker Abraham for £18.25m

England striker Tammy Abraham has completed an £18.25m return to Aston Villa from Besiktas.

The 28-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at the Premier League title challengers, as he moves back to England for the first time since joining Roma in 2021.

Abraham was on loan at Besiktas from Roma, but the Turkish club activated their buy option on Monday for £11m, so Villa will pay the fee of 21m euros (£18.25m) to them.

Villa boss Unai Emery had been looking for a striker to support Ollie Watkins and has a long-standing interest in Abraham, who had a loan spell at the club in 2018-19 and helped them earn promotion from the Championship.

Teenager Villa midfielder Yasin Ozcan, who has been on loan at Anderlecht this season, is joining Besiktas as part of the deal.

Roberto Olabe, Villa's president of football operations, flew to Turkey to watch Abraham play as Besiktas beat Kayserispor 1-0 last week.

The forward could feature against Brentford on Sunday but is not registered to play in Thursday's Europa League game against Red Bull Salzburg.

Meanwhile, former Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is set to return to the club on loan.

The 27-year-old Brazilian is on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus, but he is set to leave the City Ground before Monday's transfer deadline.

Villa are third in the top flight - four points behind leaders Arsenal - after Sunday's 2-0 win at Saudi Sportswashing Machine.

There's a couple of things here that occur to me, and even make me question myself.

Villa are bringing in the depth required for the second half of the season. Tried and trusted (ex) players that know the routine. Good pro's but not elite players.

lol - I wouldn't want either Tammy or Luiz at Spurs for the long haul. Second half of the season on loan they would be useful though.

Feels a bit of a dichotomy. Why haven't Villa plateaud lower than where they currently are?

Why would they? For some reason lots of seem to think Villa have both lower expectations and ambitions than our own? I'd say they actually higher demands. They spent to the very top of the FFP limits, when that was hit they player traded to ease their difficulties but also used the market intelligently to keep the quality of their squad high.

Right now they are vaguely within a title chase (like us in 2011/12) but rather than not investing that potential chase, they are doubling down by bringing in additional quality. It might not work, they might nothing but at least you can say they tried. That's why they haven't plateaued lower, they aren't just willing to accept their place and lack a fear of actually going for it.

No doubt the benchmarks would show us all that we've spent more money than them based on most timeframes. We've also got a higher wage bill than them as well. Aren't we 4th highest spenders and 6th wage bill or something like that?

Surely one manager can't make the difference we're seeing. You touch into some interesting areas like club culture. Not be willing to accpet their natural place in the hierarchy is one. A lack of fear or perhaps even expectation (my words) is another. Do we have these culture ingrained in our club?

I would give my right foot to get him at Spurs.

He's astute, he's calm, he's principled and he would love to stick it to the goons for what they did to torpedo his career.

He'd be ten times George Graham.....
A competent manager would make a big difference to the mood for sure, Emery certainly fits that criteria.

I've said it a loads of times, it's not about how much you spend. It's about how and when you spend it and whom you spend it on. They've filled in their gaps better than we ever have, they've looked at their weak points and addressed them better than we again ever have. It is indeed a club cultural thing, they want to win, to achieve we are happy just being part of the top group.
