Well Spence’s managers including the England one haven’t thought him playing LB is ‘small time’. The way he Marshalled the worlds best wingers with aplomb makes this analysis look shakey.

He’s done very well at LB. He needs to prove his attacking game. It is that simple.

To be honest (i've said this countless times on here and got pelters for it), if we want to be an 'in the mix' club again we need to start looking at all of our players through a harsher lens. Porro is not a good right-back. That's not his fault. He'd never played right-back before Ange came in and changed our formation to a 4 at the back.

He is a right wing-back/right-winger makeshifting it at right back. His positional sense, co-ordination with other defenders and ability to stifle threats is very poor by "top 4" standards.

Romero is an excellent ball player, but as a top 4 centreback? Absolutely not good enough. Rash, unpredictable, petulent, easy to rile up, not good enough in the air, gets shrugged off too easily, loses his man too often, costs us goals via individual mistakes too often.

VDV without his pace....what would you think of him then? Exactly.

Our defence has conceeded far too many goals again this season, even playing for a coach that is prioritising that side of the game and sat behind one of the best DMs in the PL. At some point we have to accept that is because our centre backs and full backs aren't good enough.

Due to injuries initially and lack of depth (at international level)

There is no denying he has done well there, so lets not pretend thats what people are saying. He has done well at cover at LB, thats not a long term solution to the issues we have at Tottenham, thats a continuation of small time mentality that stop gaps in position help us as a team moving forward

He is a RB, he should be long term RB pushing Porro at RB and we should be buying left footed depth at LB to add competition to Udogie..............

See the list of priorities posted a couple pages back. In short:

Urgent: LW & Midfield

Need to upgrade: forwards, another midfielder, some would say keeper

Then LB.

Since we can play VDV there as he does for his country. Davies.

I mentioned him as a decent option for us back in the summer….

If we do have the money for another Centre forward (I don’t think we do) then Porto’s Samu Aghehowa would be my choice. He is only 21 and still very raw but has the attributes to do well in the PL. suspect he’d cost close to £60m...

Or best LCB at LB and Davies................Jeez you make it more urgent with that statement

As for the order of work needed

LW - LB - Striker - LCB - Midfielder

Spence is a brilliant defender, right or left. No one is bashing Spence in that sense. But the attacking play suffers a bit because he can't cross very well with his left when he's running at speed.
That's one of his strengths on the right, playing a one-two at speed, and then putting the cross in on the first touch.

It’s not just the crossing, it is the overlapping on the outside, progressing the ball up the line with his left and even taking balls from Vicario, where he often has to come back inside towards trouble.
 
When was the last time Udogie put in a looping cross from the left? He doesn't do it. He doesn't even shoot when given an opening. I can't see he adds anything over Spence with his left foot, and indeed, Spence is a better defender.

I think Udogie’s attacking contributions are better than Spence’s by a big margin, though a lot of that is how he gets himself into the box with well timed runs.

Because Danso is massively one footed and It would be my 4th priority, I would expect us to strengthen CB once all is done and I would expect it to be a defender with balance. That might be 2 windows time, but I expect the club to start making joint up decisions when we get to it

To play VDV at left back maybe?

You always hold out these massive hopes for our really young players mate, rarely do they actually break into the team though. Vuskovic might make it at Spurs but still has a huge amount of work to do on his defensive game to be good enough to play for Spurs.

We do currently have 8 CBs on the books, 9 if you include Byfield.

There'd need to be a lot of clearing out before we look to bring another in

People worry too much about CB sidedness too. Its a Champ Manager quirk, rather than something that overly bothers most players. Some prefer playing on their inverted side because the passing angles are better
