Archie Gray

I watched the game on my mobile, so I'm not 100% sure about my observations, but there was a player who looked suspiciously like Archie Gray who I thought showed excellent passing and movement at times.

Could've been the oppositon of course, but I thought Gray (or "Gray") looked much more agile and quicker than last season. A definite improvement as I saw it. 🧐

One of our best players I thought. Positive on the ball, but also loads of effort and running including several very good and very useful forward runs off the ball. While also showing the same composure and quality in tight spaces as we saw last season playing at the back.

Time will tell how he develops and for me he has the quality and versatility to develop into several different roles. But for now he looks more natural as an 8 than a 6. But also not that uncommon for 6s to develop into that over a bit of time, it's a rather specific and very demanding role.

Maybe i guess time will tell. But for me a top 6 player is a specialist posistion and its not one that can be taught really as i believe its a mindset as much as a ability role. We shall see.

He's also bulked up a bit. Might sound contradictory but he's just a better physical specimen a year on from when we bought him. He was class last night, but then it was Doncaster Rovers.

Our 'stock' in those young runner/carrier midfielders is great. Archie, Lucas, Papa, you'd have to go some to find three of their calibre in their skill sets. AND they're really coming into it these next two-three years. Exciting times.

I pretty much agree. More thinking that at least some of those players tend to play several different roles earlier in their careers until they're ready to play as a lone 6. Carrick iirc was an example of that.

To me Gray seems to have a great understanding of the game. Showcased my him already doing well in several different positions.

If he ends up being a more natural 8 that's also great.

Absolutely. And in other positions too. And almost all of our best established players have several years at their best left too.

With just what should be an imo expected level of development in this squad we should be seeing a lot of excitement in the next two-three years. But then we seemingly have money to spend on top of that as well.

thats why i said whole of last season that ange was stunting grey's growth in defence. prior to that he was an very attack minded midfielder already with that range of passing (albeit at a lower league). it doesn't matter now that he is getting game time, but I had no doubt he would be more effective further ahead.

In fact i think TF has a slight conundrum with bergvall, sarr and grey with huge overlaps in their best positions. not a bad thing of course. what we really need is a young and younger version of paulinha to complete the midfield - like caicedo

There might be a conundrum for selecting a starting 11 in a massive match with these 3, but generally speaking we'll always rotate and keep them fresh. I can see why we were linked with Wharton in the summer as well.

I think the fun really begins when Kulu returns and then eventually Madds is fit for selection. Talk about selection headaches being a nice thing to have.

How do you work out he was a very attack minded midfielder before Ange, when at Leeds he was mostly used as a RB with a small amount of games as DM or CM?

watched a lot of highlights reels of his and its easy to tell he is very attack minded and already has that vision and range of passing. for example :

and he was a very very young then

Doesn't look at all like a player who's had his development stunted. Showed great quality on the ball last season, got plenty of minutes and gained a lot of experience at a higher level.

Him being better in midfield is a different question, and not surprising to see him do well.
