Rodrigo Bentancur

I was expecting him to be next on the list.
Hopefully we can add a few more players, and all these new contracts it's looking like a good window
 
These 2 new contracts means the wages to turnover ratio is going up. I just hope we crash out of the CL at the first stage so it doesn't come down again. 8-)
 
Would definitely be good news.

At his best he's a classy player. May not have seen that consistently since before his injury, but he's still good. And I think one reason we haven't seen that has been due to tactics and the role he's been playing.

With Palhinha in I think he'll play more in a role suited to him and I'm excited to see what he can do there under Frank. Obviously a lot of excitement around the younger players, and rightly so. But I think and hope Bentancur can have a great season now.

He was the standout for me. It didn't look like he was ever returning to his previous really good levels pre injury, but back end of last season there were signs and he's continuing this season and was still full of running at the end....
 
Agreed he did really well. Still don't think he's a natural in that deepest midfield role. Weren't able to properly adjust to that last season over time, maybe this season in a different system he could make steps in that direction?

Even if he doesn't he's certainly not a bad option for that role, good to have Palhinha as an additional option. And good to have that versatility with Bentancur being able to play both the 6 and 8 roles.
 
A slight criticism of him could be that the majority of the times he received the ball yesterday he tended to look for Romero rather than playing it forward himself. Which is a bit of a shame because he is capable of playing a good range of passes himself and there were definitely some good opportunities to beat their press and transition quickly. Otherwise a good defensive performance but one I think he could have done more with the ball in.

Technically and physically he's imo a really good player. Has the technical quality to progress the ball in various ways and ability to get out of tight spaces.

Defensively too, in one on one situations, chasing back, tackling, he can be a real beast.

But his lack of awareness imo means that he's not at impactful as he could be. Situations where he could turn himself as you say, also situations where he needs to move it on quicker and simpler. Same with awareness defensively sometimes (though good in that regard yesterday imo).

Less of an issue in a box to box role, more of an issue playing as the deepest midfielder.

Same as Bournemouth but we had at least a runner form midfield in theory
But Sarr yesterday wasn’t having a great game (no one was)
And it’s also Europe
Managing the game matters more in Europe it seems
I’d have love to have seen better football but the win is what matters
 
Had to play last season as a DM and did it fairly well but its not where is real talent lays. Now he should be given more freedom [ with the purchase of Paulinio] to show what a very good player he is.
 
I just wish he could pass better. As others have said, maybe it's an awareness thing, but I still wish we had a deep-lying playmaker. I think we make decent runs and find space further up field, but someone needs to be able to hit those passes consistently. I don't want Bergvall to be too deep since he's a great box-to-box CM and should just keep doing what he's doing currently.

On the flip side I personally think he is fantastic defensively - better than I thought when he first joined. To me he seems like a true no.6 at the moment.

When he first joined I noticed that a lot of his defensive capability came from shutting down space using his extreme pace. He was paired with Hojbjerg and we all knew Pierre had no recovery pace. Then Bents got injured and has never recovered that express pace. Now he has to rely on different attributes to be as defensively secure. However the problems seems to be that he doesn't want to over-expose himself going forward as his smarts are saying he won't get goal side like he used to. If you look closely, Bergval doesn't have this same fear. Like Sarr, they just play more with their hearts.

The interesting combination is with Palhinha because Bents needs to unshackle himself and be more like Sarr and Bergval to make that combo work.
