Mathys Tel

i haven't seen enough of him but i believe he is getting better
not so sure about odobert - yes he can get past his man, but i am not sure about progress.
Both need to improve and progress for sure. I think the injuries really hampered Odobert's development. Looks no better now than at Burnley, arguably worse.

Tel is already imo a very good player if we managed to set him up in good positions. He seems to have more confidence than Odobert imo (again, perhaps because of the injuries). That strike just wide against Bournemouth showed just a bit of his quality and confidence. But needs to improve his overall game, and/or get a couple of goals.

Odobert to me still takes his man on, tries. That's good. But he to me seems to do so slightly hesitantly.

I think either or both players could go on to have really impressive seasons. But also could go on to have underwhelming seasons. Needs to be progress there.

I'm not picking on you but "very good" wth!

Solanke isn't even very good, Kudus might be, but Tel! You're calling very good already? Based on what? What has he ever done at Spurs (or even Bayern if we are honest) that puts him into the category of a very good player?

I get the idea of supporting our players and looking for the best in them but this is hyperbole. 😂

Did I say he is very good or did I say I think he's very good if we managed to set him up in good positions?

I mean, I could have been even clearer perhaps ... He's imo very good in some situations. Does that make it clearer?

What situations is he very good in? I have failed to see any.

I think he's fast, fairly good one on one if set up running at people and a very good ball striker. Give him service, runs in behind that are found, chances in and around the box. Essentially the same situations as Sonny thrived in, but he's not at that level obviously.

He's had very few of those situations since coming here.

I disagree because I've never seen this, I feel like you're seeing the template and hoping and assuming he will do well in those situations consistently because as it stands the few times he has been in those situations (and the small number might say something about his quality in the first place) he hasn't done much at all.

Still not trying to harp on, I don't believe you can describe that as "very good". I know I'm being pedantic but words matter. Until he actually does something he's not even functional. Let's hope he starts getting chances and doing something and your very good moniker applies.

I think he's looked impressive when set up in those situations. I think that ability was part of why he was highly rated at Bayern and why we signed him.

I wouldn't have expected him to showcase that based on playing as a wide winger last season and a handful of minutes so far this season.

I don't mind pedantry. Taking two words out of context and replying to what you think I meant by it isn't pedantry.

But he hasn't been very good I these situations has he? What examples are we thinking of here? I don't think you watched him at Bayern because you think he was highly rated, so highly they sold him as soon as possible.

And you used the words "very good". Even if we are talking about specific situations when has this happened?

Tel - i like him and he may come good.

But you have to ask, what was the point? a signing with big potential sure, but he can hardly show it when he's our 3rd choice LW and 4th choice Striker.

just strikes me as a deal that had no real thinking behind it, no long term strategy.

i think it was during ange's time when we started prioritizing players for the future.
while its late this window but maybe TF has shown we need ready-made players for now.

I will never understand how any fan can make a decision on how good/bad a player can be after only a dozen or so games. The guy has just turned 20 and their seems to be some of our fans have allready written him off. Sad really.

Not only him. Gray and odobert also. Even udogie.
If ghey aren't doing it by 22. Fair enough. Otherwise...

They are youngsters. They should not be expected to be setting the world alight. But give them game time. They're not going to learn watching games. Or else this chat would be full of messi's.

Its always been a problem with some fans at all clubs, young player comes in and unless he hits the ground running [ playing well] the grumbles start that he can not do this or that and never understand that its not always easy for young players to do so.

When you re-trace last season you see early season injuries to Odobert and Richi (then Moore) and a huge burden on Sonny, Solanke and Johnson. In the second half of the season Sonny was running on empty and wholly ineffective. That was our left side problem, not Tel.

Tel was only given 2 starts and 6 sub. Arguably he should have been used way more.

as mentioned dont think it's a case of him being a success or failure and not writing him off at all.

it's the fact we dropped £30M without really any thought behind it, our transfers have been scattergun at best. He's clearly not ahead of Johnson (eesh) or Odobert, and now with Xavi in, it's unlikely he'll be there. Obviously we chased Savinho and potentially linked with Lookman so at best, he's what, 3rd if not 4th choice.

If we want him up top, which i dont think suits him, he will be behind Solanke, Richy and Kolo Muani, so 4th choice at best.

I'm big on squad depth but seems we've spent £30m on a non requirement when that could have gone to more serious issues, CM or CB for example. Again that's not me writing him off, it's pointing our his squad position based on the early games and signings we've now made.

Side note, a window with Paulinha, RKM, Xavi and Kudus is great but aside from Kudus and Paulinha, everything else is scattergun and luck, not skill or thought it seems.

Fair enough, we see it differently.

I don't think Bayern sold him as soon as possible. We reportedly asked for him at part of the Kane deal. They sold him because he wanted out because of a lack of game time and then only for a fairly solid fee.

Like all transfers there is always the risk of them going wrong and they will always be fans who will make a judgement on how good or bad they are. [ without seeing them play more then a couple of games for us].
