West Ham have agreed a deal in excess of £40m to sign Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The 21-year-old has been granted permission to travel for a medical in London.

Fernandes would become West Ham's third-biggest signing, behind Sebastien Haller (£45m) and Lucas Paqueta (£51m).

The move will be a boost for under-pressure Hammers manager Graham Potter, whose side have lost their first three matches of the season in all competitions.

Southampton look set to make a substantial profit on the £15m they paid to sign Fernandes from Sporting last summer.

The Portugal Under-21 international has played 46 times for Saints, scoring four goals and providing seven assists.

West Ham are also close to completing the signing of Monaco midfielder Soungoutou Magassa, 21, for a fee of about £17.3m. The France Under-21 international is expected to have a medical on Thursday.

Basically we are competing with villa and Saudi Sportswashing Machine. How much have they strengthened?
 
According to Dutch and German media, Leipzig has now confirmed that he is in talks with another club. The Germans suggest that he is speaking to both Chelsea and us, the Dutch media say that he is likely to move to us because Chelsea have other priorities.

For what it's worth. It does mean that he will leave Leipzig.

We have a squad that can finish in the top half. We’ll be fighting with Villa, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Brighton and Forest for the 5th-10th spots. I think Brighton and Forest will finish bottom of that mini league.

On your point about strengthening, we’ve strengthened more than them, but we’re coming from a lower base and we haven’t been settled as a team for a while. Frank will bring that this season.
 
Xavi , Eze , MGW, Savinho.

Feels like this could be a window with a serious amount of wasted time if we have attempted to sign these players and failed. Would make our transfer strategy look very amateurish.

Few days to go and as ever we are few injury’s away from being in the muck.


Good job Frank makes the unit look better than the sum of its parts as we are lacking in quality in certain areas.

Again we finished 5th just over a year ago. How much have our squad regressed in that time compared to how much theirs have progressed?

We're competing and i think we need a bit more, especially with injuries. But i don't think we are that far off.

If that's the level of player we need to improve the team, then that's what we have to try for. No point in just adding more bodies. We've got enough good, but not quite great players.

I agree. Just feels like another one of those windows for me. Plenty of names we’ve fallen short on over the years.
