It's a great question. Do you buy elite, or do you buy players and after a while you realise they're elite? Even if Palhinha is elite, which he isn't, you don't remain that way when you hit your thirties in those engine room roles. For me, he is stop gap because we couldn't get someone like Wharton who looks like he can become elite.
So perhaps that better explains my comment about elite. I wanted players signed where we could have a debate about why they should be first choice after joining an already good team. Better still, no debate.

Solid descriptions, makes sense. My standard for "elite" is perhaps a touch higher than that, not that's just how we use words. I'm really excited to see how good Kudus can get.
Agree that those signings that aren't obviously here and now great to everyone, but hit the ground running and turn out great are some of the very best. And often good value too.
Palhinha is a stop gap. Perhaps also with Gray who could become that next first choice in that position, not just a potential new signing at some point. I think with Palhinha there's at least a debate if he should be first choice?
Nobody, to my mind, doubts that Levy always puts Tottenham first. The issue is whether his actions are conducive to that objective or else if his obsessive bargaining does those objectives more harm than good....

Think it was even more extreme than that. He said that Levy saw nothing except Tottenham and Ferguson gave him credit for taking that approach IIRC.

Plenty of people assert that Levy puts his ego, financial greed, miserly nature or his personal reputation above Tottenham. A lot of those people are keyboard warriors who have some Spurs connection in their avatar

Plenty of people also defend levy to the hilt. They can accept their own speculation but can’t take any speculation against him.
Like any human he is not without his faults and merits. I think it’s the continuous cycle of seeing him in action causes people to question him in the transfer market.
Even when players, opposing chairmen, managers have said things that align with some of what is discussed here. It’s usually poopood by people that can’t have a word said against him.
Levy’s name gets dragged in the mud, sometimes it may be warranted and sometimes it’s not.
However it’s been a long time since we have all been behind the club.

It's not whether he's a superstar the question is he better than we already have? I don't know the answer but the club seemed to deem him to be so and of interest. Why now are you finishing his quality? Is it because we failed in signing him?

The biggest issue around this deal (IMO) is people evaluating just the player as opposed to what he allows others to do. I wanted him last season, I was delighted we got him this season, and we can see exactly how he helps the rest of the team; I did not have goalscoring on that bingo-card, but hey, added benefits are most welcome.

Did anyone really criticize? There were many many discussions about what people would've done. However to my eye, pretty much everyone accepted it and moved on fast. In fact, the consistent comment was that Frank was a great fit for a club which operates the way we do.

Ironically I don't also think we are that far off either (sounds like a annual thing to say at Spurs)
But I think there is a mix in that WE as fans want all players, till they are here then they are quickly deemed not enough, where as I also think we look at what others have done and over estimate the abilities of what players others have, just because. BUT IMO looking at today, our back 5 is very good, Danso and Drags is very good par for any bench, Bentancur looked dreamy at times and Sarr was MOTM and is quicky progressing into come player.
I think with the youth and others on the fringe, Frank will work wonders, I don't doubt that is why he is here, but he also has better tolls available than many fans will admit IMO.
THAT SAID, I think we need to back him, easy for me to say, but give him 120m in two/three areas and I think we give this league a massive shock at just how much talent there is here or could be with backing.

I just hope levy has taking a change in his approach and not just spending lots of money on lots of average players in the hope that they become good for a return.
So far the window has been decent but not the backing required to as he said win the league, the champions league, or at the very least backing Frank to the hilt.
But there is time yet.

Hiring a manager who gets the most out of a squad that has been invested in, including a massive youth investment and academy could be seen as a right decision, as in hiring the wrong manager is seen as the wrong one...........you can't have it all ways.
Also, we have just won a European Trophy and have started the season very very well..........we are hardly Sheffield Wednesday
