Transfer thread

We need a squad, but Sarr would be demoted right. He would be a sub and rotation option with a different first choice player. And that would be a shame. As you said in another post a Palhinha-like signing might be ideal. A Van De Vart. That way Sarr would have back up.

I'm more curious about the left side. Johnson's knack of scoring is positive, but can he add more to his game? Odobert looks on the front foot in pre-season and certainally has a role as a sub. But can he do more too and stake a claim for a starting place?

Had we signed Eze he would have slotted into that left bearth. So is a LW is our priority as Sarr, then Kulu, and then Maddison, should have something to say about the No. 10 role.

I think Ange was a little too idealistic, but could be creative with some player choices. Are we learning this early that Frank is both pragmatic and creative in his player choices and systems?

So far Frank has looked at the level and style of the opposition and also whether we're at home or on the road. Then he makes his choices, some of them really tough, based on who is available. I think we're also learning how fatigued a player needs to be before being rested. Most of our current data is pre-season data. Not sure how much to read into it but the shifts between BM, PSG and Burnley were intriguing in their own way.

Based on what I've seen so far, it's actually quite hard to make assumptions on what's ultimately needed and have felt for a while that some of the left wing demand comes from Ange philosophy thinkin. You sort of need way more data first with Frank. I think if we project backwards over the last couple of years and make our assumptions, life is easy. Ange was so easy to read and we knew his system. For so many, it was about a new number 6 and a Sonny replacement. I'm not there with Frank yet and won't be for a while. I'm one of those happy to give Odobert, Tel and even Johnson a chance to shine.

As for Sarr, said this before, but I think Frank will utilise Sarr a lot early season. Because of AFCON duties, Sarr is only available for the first 5 CL games. As they overlap with so many league games and league cup fixtures, perhaps he just rests Sarr on CL evenings and omits him from the CL squad altogether. That means he can be available as an 8 or 10. We clearly need to get our flair from somewhere and I guess if Pape's playing it will be from the wings. We'll leverage Pape's other attributes, as he's done so far. If we do sign a 10 from overseas then I guess they start off replacing Sarr or Bergval in the 10 role and earn their place eventually. That may not have been the case with Eze.

No question. Frank is pragmatic. Tick.

And so does Frank. I thought we might not sign a lot of players this summer, as Frank gets to know his squad. But we're always in the mix for signing, social media picks up on it, and leaves fans dissapointed.

In reality I think we can serperate our signings into: key targets and oppotunistic signings. Kudus, sorted early was the former. We're always in the mix for players, and if we get a free run at a signing like Eze we'll go for it. But it doesn't necessarily mean we're desperate to sign them. As fans are. Frank maybe more sanguine on this signing.

We are spoilt. Johnson scored last game. Sarr has been a sensation. We're not happy! Have to laugh. We need a couple more players for the squad. I'm not sure Eze was essential though.

The chemistry aspect of football is what makes it so fascinating. How players gell and work together within a system is alchemy. No one knows exactly how it will pan out. But Frank seems to have a good handle on it and early signs are positive. The game this weekend will tell us more, and there will be an end to the honeymoon period where the newness wares off, and having some more creativity in the side will help.

Personally I prefered Savinho to Eze (posted the same a while ago on here). We probably won't get him either, but I'm not crying about Eze. What we don't know is how bothered Frank is. I guess a lot will depend on who we do sign.

Luckily Frank is pragmatic and can fashion a team from imperfect parts.
He isn't wedded to a formation or style.
So if we only have players for 451 or 442 or 4321 or whatever, he can put a team together.

Like most of us, I would love it if Spurs moved quickly and decisively i.e. the price is X. We say will you take Y? They say no and we just QUICKLY agree a number in the middle and get it done. Don't spend 2 weeks inching around, just cut to the chase. Easier said than done. But don't always try to get a GREAT deal, get an acceptable deal quickly.

The other thing I was thinking about; when Cheatski had a transfer ban about 10 years ago and were not allowed to sign anyone, they promoted a load of 21s and had really good growth from those players that otherwise may have stagnated.

That can be true for us, if we are forced to play our 17-22 year olds, more than we might have expected, that can also reap benefits where we grow them faster and can truly use them in the first team squad.

We've sent 11 of our best of that age group on loan. Only Gray, Bergvall, Tel and Odobert, who are already in our 25, are really left (Vuskovic and Gunter too). Our U21s doesnt have anyone left who is remotely close to the first team - Olusesi and Byfield seem closest

links to Rogers now

No chance we will pay what they want, but should test it out with a bid
Don’t expect to get him but this would be an elite signing.

Just turned 23, upward curve, closest I’ve seen to Dele’s style. Not a playmaker but direct, travels well with the ball, always around the goals.

Yeah, have a feeling this guy is a season away from his big move. Interesting journey through Baggies, City, Boro and Villa on his way being Villa's most important player. Contracted until 2030 but only on £70k a week.

I have no optimism we'll get him either but like the idea that we're theoretically disrupting Villa with some sizeable bids in these next few days.

So what is the state of play now?

Top priority has to be a no. 10. We were in for a no. 10 before Maddison's injury. Now I've read reports that Kulusevski could be out until 2026. Lost out on our top 2 targets. Doesn't look like there are any PL proven players available of the requisite quality so likely to be someone from abroad?

Feel like we need a replacement for Son as a left winger/forward. Savinho feels like a long short. Will we hijack Everton's move for Tyler Dibling?

We could do with a centreback if we are going to play 3 at the back in big games. We are 1 injury away from playing Davies, Takai or Gray in a massive game. GHod knows when Dragusin will be fit and what his form will be like.

Club don't seem to be that interested in a left back but if it was down to me I would be.

Have you seen Byfield play? He's a 16 year old kid who would be taken apart by an experienced player, he has potential but that's all at this moment in time, just look at the goal he gave away on monday night.

Left back depends on Spence I guess - seems light relying on him to cover left and right though.

LW I'm not sure - is Savinho interest just a case of a top talent potentially being available so we are interested in an opportunistic way or are we actively looking to strengthen LW? I'm surprised that having signed Tel and having Odobert that we're actively looking to strengthen there as a matter of priority without really giving either a chance to stake a claim as in theory we have a starter and a backup option already in the squad.

AM obviously a priority given the dearth of options

That was my point. We don't have youth players to use this season (because that cohort have all been loaned), other than the ones that we already know about.

Kulu will be back next month. So will Dragusin.

Dibling is a right winger and makes no sense now we have Kudus.

I don't think we'll play 3 at the back, other than maybe away at Liverpool and City.

I think we'll get a LW and 10. Sav and Paz would be ideal, but I expect we'll end up with cheaper (Lookman and El Khannouss?)

It looks like we'll park LB till January, which is a shame, but Davies should be fine in easier matches.

Really haven't seen enough from Tel to suggest he's good enough. Odobert similarly. The fact that Johnson was preferred there to both options against Burnley for me speaks to something if not volumes.

I guess Gray can play right-back. But i'm old school, I just prefer a natural left footer as a LB particularly if you're going to play right footed left wingers/wing forwards out there.
