Savinho

He doesn't score them. He does everything else that Johnson is awful at doing. Overall he would be better for the team.
Don’t get me wrong I’m 100% behind Savinho over Johnson. But I’m acknowledging the author has an agenda. Adding it would create a spike out to the edge for Johnson and a drop towards the centre for Savinho, creating a much different looking shape to the graph

I do get that and I accept 100% that Savinho lacks goals for City (although he scored at a decent rate for Girona).

To be honest I think last season was an outlier for Johnson. Without playing Ange rather lopsided and unbalanced attacking system Johnson isn't going to find himself in the position for the tapins that he had last season. I think it's a non argument tbh.

So he’s basically the anti Johnson.

Well, I think we can be pretty sure Johnson won’t be doing all those other things anytime soon.

Maybe Savinho can add goals (play more inverted/closer to goal) then you have a player with the full package.

Here’s hoping as I also am curious as to why we are spending on the wing again.

Could Johnson be converted into a strike? Gets a good number of goals, gets in the right place to score

Solanke
(Richalison/Johnson)
Savinho Maddison Kudos
(Tel) (Kulusevski) (Odobert)
Ifv everyone was fit....

I don't know the answer to this but it does occur to me that Savinha was the star in the making at Girona and the system was setup for him to get goals. We all know the role that Haaland has at City and I'm not surprised that Savinha's stats have shifted over to assists.

It's possible that Savinha has had a glance across at us and seen a Sonny sized hole. It's an opportunity to be the main man again and get back in the goals with a manager who is great with wide forwards. Obviously, if the financials fit then the rest could possibly fit as well.

We don't actually have much depth of quality. In terms of proven ability we only have Kudus in that category. Then we have the promising in Odobert, some would add Tel there (I kind of don't really see it but no), then you have Johnson who I think is basically awful at anything other than finding space for the tapins.

We have Kulu who has been crap at RWF for way longer than he was good there and he does play better in the centre. Then we have the super young and developing, Yang and Moore who aren't any impact anytime soon and then finally the guys who have no future here, ie. Gil, Solomon etc and I would add Richy on the wing into that group also.

So whilst on paper we have numbers , they are just bodies. Unless one of Odobert or Tel has a breakthrough this season our attacking width quality is concentrated entirely on Kudus.

All the limitations he has on the right are just as if not more prevalent with an attempt to play him through the middle. He has no hold up ability, he can't keep the ball under any pressure, has no linking ability, can't beat a man to gain space for a shot etc.

There is a world in which he can play striker but it's in a duo with a more physical and present player. We don't look like we are playing 2 up top anytime soon so it's a very strong no for me.

I wonder if Frank sees Johnson as a central striker - rather than a wide forward.... his attacking stats are not too far away from Wissa's, for example.
He'll do well to get similar performances out of him. They don't play the same and Wissa has a more rounded on the ball game than what we've ever seen from Johnson so far.

I mostly agree. Thinking of it as the 3 in a 4-2-3-1, thus also including Maddison being injured only makes it worse.

On Kulusevski we'll see. I agree under Ange he was better in the centre, we'll see what Frank can do with him. On his day in the right role he's a quality player.

Didn't Johnson score and assists at a good rate before we signed him too?

I think a narrower wide role could suit him quite well.

No doubts he has his shortcomings mind.

In an open counter attacking space team so maybe if we are going to have bigger spaces he might well do better. Another thing he's good at is gaining space it's something we never really utilized under Ange. Johnson would often be in acres of space but the lack of the switch pass meant that by the time we got the ball to him he already had a defender on him and he's pretty useless in those situations.

In the open and on the counter he might well excel. I can't imagine working well against a settled defense in a 9 esque role, it doesn't suit his attributes at all.

I’m starting to get the impression you don’t rate Johnson very highly..
You know what it is he reminds me of Theo Walcott and it would be hypocritical of me to have critiqued Walcott's game as much as I did to only the praise his clone 10 years later just because he plays for my team now.

I'm consistently critical but if you look at what I say I'm not even unfair, it's nothing personal it's I see loads of holes in his game and in terms of style he is specifically a kind of player is dislike.
