I'mm not sure the positional distinctions are as relavent as players abilities. For example, a 10 can be a strong tackler (as in MGW's case). Peronally I want every player to be able to tackle well and be combative. Where they are on the pitch depends on the system, the opposition etc.
Equally a more defensive player should also be able to shoot from the edge of the box, or make a key pass or cross.

True... but the thing I see as crucial for a 6 is his vision and anticipation.... that goes well beyond tackling ability. It's what separates the likes of Makalele and Kante from other decent defensive midfielders

Yes, but there's plenty of players worth over 100m that haven't moved or moved later in their career when they were no longer worth 100m.

I'm currently taking a sh1t, and I think the cable I dropped is worth 100m. But I won't sell it. But it's worth 100m.
Even so £80m is steep.
What's weird about it? Messi never went for 100+m but do you think he wasn't worth well over that?
Maybe a little, I would've said around 60-70m. Don't know where the 80m price came from anyway.

I'll give you Messi, but You said plenty. Messi is singular. A player is only worth what someone else is willing to pay. A player might be worth more for the club he's playing for, that that's irrelevant.
There is plenty of top players that were at top clubs that never moved that would've cost over 100m. Messi was the most obvious one. There's several from that Barca team alone, Xavi, Inesta, Busquets...
Some of the best players to play the game with medals to show. Also would bring in huge amounts of money from sponsors and merch to any club buying them.
Not sure wharton can say that. He has 2 things in his favour. He's hg and he is young so less likely to lose value. Arsenal did pay £100m for rice but i think that was overpaying. Should have been about £80m. But you are worth what someone is willing to pay.
Son and Kane would've gone for 100m+ at their peaks without any medals to show...
There's a good few players in that 60-80m bracket and Wharton is easily in that category right now.

People get so hung up on transfer fees. Much better to overpay for the right player, than get a bargain on the wrong one. Price is relatively irrelevant, make sure they are the right player. We thought we got a deal on Bissouma, everyone laughed at Liverpool for overpaying for VvD.

How do you make sure it's the right one? They could do their acl first day of training.
