Guglielmo Vicario

This is also why with less exposure, being good with the feet is a worthwhile trade-in for shot stopping ability in the very best teams. Ederson has never been the best shotstopper and Victor Valdes too was nothing special. Alysson is impressive as he does both very well and can make 2 or 3 great saves im a game despite spending the rest of it standing around.

Depends how bad a shot stopper surely?

And the quality too
So going on the ederson comments when you got through city you. Early always had a high quality chance to score
I’m sure at some point he had the highest XG ratio faced (was at their peak) … but he also had the lowest amount of shots to save in total
We were a team that always exploited that
Vic has a high volume of shots to save but actually gained us make believe points form those saves in quantity and quality

He was (imo) the best in the world for a season or 2
But.. he is way back now and even city don’t think he will get back to his previous level

I don’t think it’s outrageous to say Ederson has regressed but he doesn’t seem to rate any keeper other than Vicario who has made plenty of errors and is panicky beyond belief particularly from set pieces.

He is much better on set pieces than he was
That period form Jan 4th (I think) to the end of the 24 season was horrendous
It instilled no confidence for anyone to play in front of him
Last year he was better if far from perfect
His shot stopping is as good as any keepers
His foot work with the ball is average
If he could do the latter he would be the ideal pep keeper as he needs his keeper to pull of miracles but also be outstanding with the ball
City will be buying someone soon. Will be interesting to see who they get
Ederson was an outstanding signing and is still decent of course but there is a reason why they dropped him last season

Back to Vicario, I’d sell him as I think we would probably make money given his age. Maybe he will improve under a less gung ho manager though.

Did you watch Ederson yesterday? another 2 goal fudge up, in addition to passing the fudging ball to the opposition in the previous game. My point is if Vic had made one of those 3 mistakes in 2 games (just fudging one), the media narrative would have been how brick he is, and Spurs fans would be clapping it.

Allison is the top keeper in the league, Martinez is a clam but a decent keeper. Outside of that a lot of the PL keepers are much the same, Pope, Pickford, Henderson, Sanchez, Areola, Sa, Leno, no real Nuer/Courtois/Donnarumma's in that lot.

My overall point remains the same, Vic is a top level shotstopper, who has some weaknesses (as everyone is happy to point out), but actually doesn't outright fudge up as much as a lot of keepers and I don't see some huge line of great goalkeepers we can go buy to replace that would be an actual upgrade.

fudging Arsenal just went out and bought Kepa? fudging really? Kepa?

I thought Kepa was really good last season. He's always been good with his feet and a great shot stopper. What he lacked was calmness under the high ball. On commentary they seemed to be saying that he had worked really hard at that part of his game and gone up a few gears.

I certainly wouldn't dismiss his abilities compared to the other keepers in that list.

He doesn’t necessarily make high profile blunders, but his overall panicky and nervous nature doesn’t help the defence which already concedes too many goals. It’s kind of a chicken and egg thing. I don’t think he’s a terrible keeper and he does have some positives, but I feel the weaknesses in his game are pretty glaring and whilst he’s not the top of the list of priorities to replace, he’s certainly upgradable.

Everyone except a very few players are upgradable, the question is what percentage upgrade do you get at what tradeoff?

I don't think you will get a significantly better shot stopper, you might get someone better at claiming stuff in the air, or you could go for someone better with their feet (but Onana could be the lesson learned there)

Kepa was
He was very solid for Bournemouth

Yeah
He has been more exposed and he clearly can’t deal with it now
Vic gained us more points than any keeper last year … isn’t know how they measure that, but hey
