So, what happened today?

Great! Going in August. Have not seen/interviewed them (Reznor) in many years (last time I saw them was when they toured with Bowie). The set-list looks outstanding and production pretty great too. I'm a first album/Broken/Downward Spiral lover so lots in this one it seems...

I'm not excactly a NIN fan* - had Downward Spiral and know the big tunes but never really clicked with them, but I wanted to see them live to tick a band off the list and yeah so glad I did as it is probably one of the best shows I've been to - Closer live is an absolute belter. You're in for a treat

*since the show I've been delving in to their albums and I'm getting in to them much more - never really appreciated how electronic their sound is before

Along with Ministry, they were vanguards of the 'new' industrial rock movement ( SPK, Throbbing Gristle and the like were progenitors). Reznor worshipped the Berlin Bowie era and also Gary Numan!!!!
I first saw them in 1990 in the Bay Area, and then again in 1991 @ Wembley with GnR (a great performance during daylight)!
They had a huge fight with their label at the time which spawned Broken (he did it to get out of his contract and it ended up being brilliant not throwaway) and the subsequent Fixed (no Broken LOL)...The Downward Spiral was a dark album. He hired out the house where Sharon Tate got murdered by Manson gang folks, and wrote/recorded much of it there. That was the last album cycle I did any stories on him, and after the Bowie tour a decade or so later, I lost touch with his career as he went into soundtracks.

So I am really excited to see this show as that set-list lends to a lot of what I loved about them ("Reptile" might be my favourite NiN song ever)...and yes, Pretty Hate Machine is (at times) almost like heavy Soft Cell!!!!! Very 'electro-poppy' in places..."Ringfinger" being a prime example.

p.s. not sure if you've ever seen the "Closer" video? It was a true groundbreaker...they were influenced at the time by Joel-Peter Within, a controversial photographer who was into human curios, etc. They denied it but his influence is all over the video...

Yeah. Cancer Research ran a campaign a few years ago highlighting how obesity was a major factor that led to many forms of cancer but they got told off for “fat shaming”. I’m guessing they should shut up and not try and help people reduce the risk of getting a life threatening illness because it upsets people.
Mate after my cardiac arrest my cardiologist told me straight up you are fat lose weight I am 6ft 4 & did weigh 120kg at the time.He then went on to tell me to quit smoking unless I wanted to get cancer. No messing around these are the facts don't like it go see someone else. I definitely like that approach. Problem is today especially people of a younger generation they want people to put there arms around them & tell them everything will be ok.

Mind you all the stuff I can't eat to help my heart is hard to follow. Positives quit smoking after 45 years lost 15 kilos & go to cardio rehab 3 times a week at the hospital. basically it's going to the gym but they call it rehab so they can charge more

Went into my local Nike store today, how long have fat/obese mannequins been a thing in shops now? I get that inclusion is big now but I always thought of Nike primarily as a fitness company, they now focus a lot on lifestyle as well. But shouldn’t a FITNESS company encourage people to be you know….fit? I’m not for taunting people who struggle with weight as I’ve been overweight at many stages during my life, but there’s a big difference between mocking people and saying it’s ok to be overweight. Surely everyone should strive to be fit even if they never achieve it?

What a weird take. People have to start somewhere, so good on Nike for meeting them there and showing that anyone can wear their gear on their fitness journey.

@billyiddo mate, have we had the Underworld conversation before? I am a HUGE fan, seen them approx 20 times now since 1996, and got to say, their last year of shows where they've been doing the two-set gigs have been the best yet. Saw them at the Ally Pally April 2024 and agaion in SF a copule of months ago (when they were utterly transcendent)...going again in LA in Sept...if they do any of their two-set gigs anywhere close to you (and you're inclined) check it out, be interested in your take...

yes indeed, inclusion is key.
I am about to do my 500th Orange Theory class tomorrow. It's all creatures great and small, we all get on with it, do the hour of HiT a few times a week and do the best we can by ourselves regardless of washboards or bulges...EVERYONE is welcome!

Sometimes it takes the shock factor to make a difference. I was a smoker from about the age of 16, with a couple of attempts at stopping (the longest being 4 years). Then I had a heart attack (so not as serious as the cardiac arrest that you had) and there are 2 things that I will never forget. One was the surgeon who performed the angioplasty and stent insertion who mid-procedure said in his very posh voice “Young lady, you have to stop smoking” (I was 43 at the time so was kind of happy with the first part!). But the other thing was the look of fear on my husband’s face when I was in A&E earlier. Any time I am tempted by a cigarette, I remember that and think how could I put him through that again.
I also remember getting home from hospital and all my cigarettes (I had recently stocked up on a work trip to Istanbul) had disappeared, into the loft as I later found out, and then sold on to someone else. Only had one drag on a cigarette since then, but otherwise not touched one now for 16 years. Yet the temptation is always “there”.

Yes there’s no need to be mean to people but sometimes the truth is the best medicine. I guess people have to choose, would they rather a doctor give them the cold hard facts or be lie to them.

Can I be explicit and denounce all violence against civilians.

There is no excuse for it and both sides of that particular feud indulge in it.

But perhaps it is no bad thing those who support or condone or even excuse these people make themselves known.

And the IDF are the worst for it. But they are considered allies and supported and funded (US) by the west. Hamas are vile. IDF are vile. Wishing death on either is fine.

I’m confused, so does the British Government fund the IDF or not?

Because I don’t believe we do. Also do not conflate my country with the USA. We have been at war with the USA before now.
