All that matters [at the moment] is the game on Wednesday. I could not give a brick about how bad we have been, stupid arguments [ about what type of man Ange is] or miserable moaners about our season.

It is what it is, we are in the final of a trophy and i could not give a brick how good, bad, poor a competition it is, its what the game is all about imo and that is the enjoyment of winning something.

COYS.
This!!!

I don't think it's people's fault TBH, it's UEFA fault. This isn't the UEFA Cup it was then, the straight knock out alone back then made it a more formidable competition than it is now, the break up and constant reformation of the comps has made sure of that IMO

As for 91, I think the fact the SF is as imfamous of not more famous than the final means that win stands up over any length or test of time

UEFA's reformatting of both their tournaments has undoutably messed with them. It's like what FIFA keep doing to the World Cup; soon it might well be harder NOT to qualify for the finals LOL. So I accept that the organising bodies continue to mess with many aspects of oiur game to its detriment in terms of quality (adding useless international tournaments and friendlies so as top players get wrecked physically can be added to that).

My point is that finding ways to devalue appearing in a European final is pretty naff IMO. What's the point? I mean, taking THAT stance is a personal choice isn't it? And I don't understand why people simply cannot look forward to being in a European final without some sort of 'qualification'?

We played 12 games in the 83/84 run (each game was 2 legs - not sure if that's what you meant by 'straight knock-out' but it wasn't one-off ties, always home and away).
We have already played 14 matches in this season's tournament, with Wednesday being the 15th. I think the newer format is actually a bit weird TBH, and I'm not sure it makes things any easier. Our stats are interesting...

I suppose someone could look at those stats and say that the Europa League standard must be lower if we're doing that well in the tournament because our league form shows worse stats? Which (again) to me anyway would be a really weird and proactively negative way to view being in a Final.

p.s. BTW mate -and I'm sure you didn't intend it to be- but hanging my '91 comment on the SF against the goons? One of the greatest games in our modern history for so many reasons (not the least of which we were staring down the barrell of an ugly fiscal gun)? You know that match was the outlier of the whole affair (with Forest also being formidable opponents) and you surely know I was referring to Blackpool, Oxford, Pompey, and Notts.County?!!!!!!!

TBF mate I am not trying to devalue it, was honestly a Sunday afternoon conversation piece. I like talking Spurs and I like talking football and current affairs Spurs.

I said a year or so back when West Ham won the conference league that I didn't believe it was the same level as the trophy once was as the Cup Winners Cup and I still maintain that. Does that mean people enjoyed it less, does it mean I will not enjoy Wednesday if Pray GHod we win? Absolutely not and I think people are confusing that some what.

Anyway its getting close now and I am going to enjoy it and pull myself away from these conversations, I hope Ange does it for him, the club and all of us......

No trophy is as good when it doesn’t contain winners
The way that European football is structured now is purely about getting more teams in it for £€$

Let's hope we can actually WIN the trophy and continue these academic conversations into August.

One thing is without nuance, Ange has failed in the league massively and the level of the failure CANNOT be excused away by pointing at the injuries.
The downward spiral goes way back to last spring and there hasn't been much difference in output when we HAVE had most of our first choice available, the same goals conceded from the same positions etc.
He has shown that he's not good enough to do well long-term in this league and is not worth throwing money behind given how many injuries we get.

As i've said, let's hope he leaves us on a high with a European Trophy.

I think if the club's aim was to find an appointment that would unite the increasingly fractured fan base and address the increasingly bitter and hostile atmosphere at the stadium, then this guy's appointment can only be viewed as an unmitigated disaster. You only have to read the last few pages of this thread to verify that...
If we were winning everyone would be united. Perform crap in the league then it's going to be fractured no matter who the manager is.
