Brennan Johnson

The other side of that argument is that you could have a winger that can beat opponents, pass, cross and defend.

How many goals does that prevent and lead to. Just because it's not as quantifiable as goals and assists doesn't mean it's any less of value.

People used to complain that Dembele didn't score or assist but compare what we was with him to without.

I don't think you can afford to have a play who contributes so little outside goals is n any position apart from striker. The only other players who played any similar are Alli and Muller. Ones an all time and the others career faded.

I think Ange is worth a bit of gratitude for getting us to a major cup final (4th highest total prize money in world football)?
a bit.
gotta thank the organizers for preventing the CL dropouts from taking part more.

neutrals are calling the 16th v 17th cup final a joke and i don't blame them

gonads he is an awful manager and I can't wait till he fcuks off.

Have you even watched us in the league.

Johnson arriving in positions to score is something he works on, he does it multiple times a game only when he is picked out most notice it. But he is very good at it, and it’s not a skill to be overlooked or underestimated.

Now is that enough to justify his place in the team is another debate. But if we had a player that was better on ‘the eye test’ but contributed half as much goal involvements people would be more happy… but would the team be better for it? Which is scary to think about considering how bad this team is.
I want a player who contributes positively to the general play, as I do believe that is ultimately more useful than someone like Johnson who does indeed finish a specific type of chance but is otherwise a ghost and often otherwise a hindrance.

He does not help us keep possession, he doesn't help us beat a press, he doesn't help us beat a settled defence. He only has one useful attribute and for me despite the goals that is far too one dimensional a game style to actually be successful as these season has largely shown.

Yeah, I don't mind him. We try and play good football, we have played outstanding football, there's obviously been some bad results, but weve had horrendous injuries, which could be down to his demands, but we're also in a final, and he hasn't lost the dressing room. I would much rather watch Angeball and lose than Conte/Jose ball and win. I can't see a standout replacement, so I would give him another season, just to make sure before we rinse and repeat.

A fine post.
I sadly think it is done regardless and he's off in the summer; genuinely do not think anyone could be expected to stick around after some of the stuff which has gone on this season.
Your point about 'no standout replacement' is one worth repeating over and over. If we end up with, say, Marco Silva, what will that actually say about us?

I get your sentiment but winning Conte ball was better tactically and more entertaining than losing Ange ball and I prefer Ange ball when done right as well.

There was some great games under conte and some games where we looked brilliant
Mainly in 2nd half of his first season
But at not point did i ever think he wanted to be our manager and it played out exactly as expected

We will get relegated if he stays.

He will be sacked in the Autumn, it would be the same as Ramos.

For me he is the worst manager I can ever remember. Apart from Frankfurt we have played no one of worth in Europe and now an awful man u in the final. It shows how awful the Europa is.

Can not understand how anyone can watch us and still want Ange, he is tactically clueless. He has a weird arrogance for someone so awful.

The main entertainment under Conte was from peak Son and Kane. Without them...I imagine it would have been a lot worse.

Here are the teams who've knocked us out in the Europa League, Conference League and UEFA Cup since 2006:

2021/22: 3rd in a group containing Stade Rennes, NŠ Mura and Vitesse (Nuno/Conte)
2020/21: Dinamo Zagreb (Jose Mourinho)
2016/17: KAA Gent (Mauricio Pochettino)
2015/16: Borussia Dortmund (Mauricio Pochettino)
2014/15: ACF Fiorentina (Mauricio Pochettino)
2013/14: SL Benfica (Tim Sherwood)
2012/13: FC Basel (Andre Villas-Boas)
2011/12: 3rd in a group containing PAOK Saloniki, Rubin Kazan and Shamrock Rovers (Harry Redknapp)
2008/09: Shakhtar Donetsk (Harry Redknapp)
2007/08: PSV Eindhoven (Juande Ramos)
2006/07: Sevilla (Martin Jol)

Some real heavy hitters there! The point being...we've finally taken this competition seriously -- to some extent, to the detriment of our league form -- and it's still not good enough. Still many people want to put an asterisk on it, play it down like it means nothing.

The people who think it means nothing are likely restricted to those who spam every thread with "fudge off Ange" or call him a fat clam in every other post. In other words...those who've for some bizarre reason decided they hate Ange on a personal level, and watch football through that lens.

When you say "who would stick around" it does sound like you think he should be given another go?

I do wonder about this, I do consider that maybe everything this season has been a conflagration of "bad luck" to an extent but then I think of the context and how he hasn't helped himself and how even the previously season tailed off. In the end I just think he will get sacked in the early part of next season anyway so maybe we save ourselves that pain in advance?
