Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

How has PEH been out of his depth in the last few months? Looked good at the Euros and was often required in the latter stages of last season - He was just about as inconsistent as anyone else in our midfield.

Either way it looks a decent move for him and the club. I still think we need a reliable experienced head coming in, nobody's describing Biss as reliable, Bentancur may reliably throw racist remarks around or bottles but rarely turns up on the pitch.

There's so much young talent in that area and I love that, but if we really want to improve on last season in terms of league position and cup performance I still think we need a proper beast in there. If things are not going swimmingly well I don't want to see folks laying in to Gray / Bergvall / Sarr, but imo they'll benefit from having a been there done it character who can show them how it's done.
Mainly struggling against any sort of press. But also at least one major brain fart decision per game. And generally being a poor user of the ball and defensively positionally ill-disciplined.

He can be useful as a 'disruptor' in games. But he's also as likely to disrupt our momentum as he is the opponent's.

My issue is I don't exactly know who to go out and buy. It's a vaguely controversial one but I still reckon Romero could absolutely crush it as the most defensive of the 3 in midfield, but it's speculation as we haven't seen it happen (apart from when he generally just goes wherever he fancies a on a marauding run). There might be more gettable targets at CB as opposed to CM, although I've no idea how the market is.

Seems like a big ask to expect Skipp to suddenly step up, on paper I don't see how the new signings fit in and look a real competitive team at the top level. Folks won't like the comparison but Arsenal going out and getting Rice because they needed that level of player, plus having the likes of Jorginho around so big experience as well...

Back to PEH, it's fair that people that aren't a fan will be happy he's gone and to get some usable funds in but I do see a gap in the squad that Gray may eventually fill and exceed. The expectations for him to do that hitting the ground running is a tad much (as ever I'd love to proved wrong!)
Given unlimited ambition, right now I would absolutely go and buy Fabian Ruiz. He'd lost his way a bit at PSG (but that's not hard to do) but previous to that he was a very interesting DM/CM option. He was absolutely fantastic at the Euros (my player of the tournament) and suits the style we want to play technically and physically as well as being experienced (he's 27 iirc) and of course he's now also been the key component in a winning team.

He was brilliant before pSG too

He was fine against a press, used the ball pretty well and was defensively disciplined (far more disciplined here than Bissouma for example).

It is the right time for him to move on from both his and the club's perspectives. I feel that many people underrate him on here because they don't look past him doing a lot of pointing and showing a bit of passion, when, in reality, he typically always does a good job, carries out the manager's instructions and pops up with goals and assists despite typically playing a relatively deep role.

My thoughts as well played nearly 200 games for us and always gave his all. Not the most silky player but he was always involved and never hid[ especially when a few macarons in the crowd got on his back]. Good luck to him in the future.

Hojbjerg seemed to take the easy pass backwards 99 times out of 100.
From up high it was easy to see he could turn out and build an attack, or feint one way and go the other, or flip it to someone making a run, but no.
Very frustrating to see us pass it around at the back and out wide and into Hojbjerg and he just rolls it back to start again.
Over and over, without even scanning the pitch ahead, nor angling his body to receive and move forwards, he just nearly always popped the ball back where it came.
This will get us nowhere, we need players that actually try to be positive and hurt the opponent and build attacks, not stifle attacks.
We know he can be progressive when he chooses, but when put into certain roles he just always goes back and it was extremely draining.

He couldn't play through the press, he couldn't play on the turn, he was a mainstay in a midfield that got dominated against pretty much every team it came up against. He was awful for us and i absoloutely hated watching him - his basic passing was atrocious, unforced errors multiple times a game, gaping holes in the middle of the pitch whenever he was playing. The player who symbolised our return to mediocrity more than any other.

That said he'll probably lead Marsielle to the title and European glory in his first season.

These loans til their contact expires things seem to be a uniquely Tottenham thing. That's Perisic, Dier and PEH all despatched the same way. I get that it defers a payment, but do we actually get paid???

We get paid with PEH. With Dier I believe we got a loan fee and with Perisic it was just getting him off the books.

How though if he's out of contract at the end of the season? What are we going to do exercise some option on him and instantly sell him?

He won't be out of contract when he has to be bought, will be done a few weeks before that happens.
It's just an accounting manoveur to help Marseille. It also probably helped get the deal done with a slightly higher price.

We will extend his contract before the loan
Its what happened with Reya when we pulled out of buying him
They had to do it for Arsenal to buy him in this window

It's a loan with obligation to buy. It's basically just giving them 12 months extra to pay for him. Usually in these sort of deals, the overall cost for the buying club is higher than it would be if they bought the player straight away, but spread out over an extra year.

Yep. And we’re also not allowed to be unhappy or underwhelmed with individual signings like Werner because we can only judge on the entire window as a whole. So in other words if we sign another forward and Werner is purely a backup then it’s a good signing. Nothing wrong with that logic tbh but the season starts in less than a month. The preseason has already started and we haven’t signed another forward. So if we don’t sign another forward does that mean Werner is a good signing or a bad signing?

That’s actually a good question. But things can be so nuanced and we’re not actually in their heads to know what they’re thinking.

(Example Ange thought bubble…) “Hmmm.. I’d really like someone that I can bring on late in a game against tired legs with pace to get in behind to play crosses in. Especially in situations where we’re sitting deep and need an outlet. It’s a bit too specialised so I don’t want to pay a permanent fee. A loan will do, especially if it’s someone we are familiar with than can do that…hmmm who might fit the bill?”

In this scenario whether or not we sign anyone else Ange has filled a need that he wants for that specialist role.

I feel like we're seeing a lot of extreme opinions (again). Either he was an amazing player for us or he was utter doodoo.

IMO, his first season for us was pretty decent. I was pretty happy with his contributions, but I was unhappy with how Mourinho chose to play him every single match. PEH obviously has a good engine, but I don't think any player outside of GK or MAYBE CB can withstand a full season of starting every single match. It's not the player's fault; it's on the manager to rotate (on top of that, we end up stifling Skipp's progression slightly by not electing to play him).

Also, I think he should've played more as a Box-to-Box midfielder making late runs into the box. His finishing was decent, but I don't think his passing was good enough for a deep midfielder. His penultimate season kind of summed up what I thought of him as a player, which is basically what you mentioned, @billyiddo . I don't think he was always so bad, but I didn't really see any progression from PEH and in fact, it did seem to be a case of him getting too comfortable playing safe with passes, unprofessional conduct when arguing with the ref, and ultimately not being selected by Ange. Thing is, PEH did actually have some nice assists and crosses, so I think if he just tried a bit more to make those forward passes, maybe he would've been a better player.

Again, you guys that are defending PEH need to consider the logic of passing to our defense/GK while being pressed when we had Dier and Lloris, whose distribution of the ball and press-resistance weren't exactly strong suits of theirs.

Anyway, I don't have any hard feelings towards PEH. I personally found it strange that he started off really well and then declined in terms of his overall decision-making and work ethic (but as I mentioned before, there might be a good excuse for that). I wish him all the best at Marseille and for Denmark.
