The Goon Thread

There are many professions - including mine - where absolute concentration is regularly required for considerably more than 45 minutes. It’s not easy but it’s entirely possible.
So not a single off focus thought enters your head?

You don’t think about needing a tinkle, what time it is, eating, drinking, smoking, sex, did I lock the front door, when is VDV back?

Fair enough if true, you have a better trained brain than I do. I’m normally thinking about 5 different things at once.

Much of the time we are working flat out for periods of up to 1.5 hours without respite, operating heavy machinery at high speed. I’m sure that there are occasional off focus thoughts but most of the time it’s like being in a time machine and an hour or two can ‘disappear’. We certainly don’t have 1-2 minutes of down-time every 10-15, as Ramsey states above. I admit that I sort-of get what he means, but I’m still surprised to hear him talk about it on camera and I’d certainly question his attention span vs suitability to be an elite sportsman. Maybe that lack of concentration is why he’s now Number 2 to a GK that can’t catch crosses or get his positioning right?

1 in 5 people are neuro divergent.

A lot of pro players will be same, he’s just being honest.

If Raya was concentrating 100% of the time he wouldn’t drop crosses or be in the wrong place.

Neuro diversity is well outside my knowledge area. Is Ramsdale neurodivergent then? Perhaps I missed something in the video (which now won’t play unless I visit Twitter, or whatever Musk is calling it this week).

I don’t dispute his honesty. Indeed, he seems a generally honest and quite likeable bloke. If he has found coping mechanisms that enable him to (in his view) function better throughout a game then that’s great for him. I’m not disputing how he copes; just saying that IMO it’s perfectly possible to concentrate fully for 45+ minutes.

As for Raya- maybe his concentration is 100%. Maybe it isn’t. Or maybe he’s not that good? I don’t know.

I’d say that that’s what mistakes are, losing concentration.

100% concentration equals 100% control.

Errors of judgement and lapses of concentration are not the same thing.
Whilst there is a cross over between the two and the causation/correlation line will sometimes be blurred, they are just part of performing any task.

What Ramsdale said is "he can't concentrate on a game of football for 90 mins". You don't have to. You just need to be aware and present for 90mins, concentration is then used in whatever scenario as a skill.
Ramsdale seems to be suggesting he can't cope with playing football for 90mins without getting distracted. Which does, as you've said, point towards neurodivergence.

I wonder how much of that is playing it's part in the huge increase in late goals?
