Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Finish 7th after a dodgy start, getting on a nice run at the end. Still only finish within 3 points of top 4. Win the FA Cup and Europa. Id take that.

I thought football these days was all about finishing in the top 4? That's one reason why we have a new manager now!

It's not just pull a number out of the air and that will do re next season's success.

A lot depends on the transfer dealings between now and window close

- e.g. keep Modric, sign Ade +Vert/Sig/+1 other striker = 3rd/4th would have to be the target
- lose Modric and Ade, then probably 5th would be acceptable, provided we seem to be improving, building system, addressing things like set pieces/fitness/etc.
- A Cup win would also cut AVB a lot of slack.

From 4th to 7th and 1pt off 3rd to 3pts off 4th.

And you'd "take that". Wow.

Each to their own, but I want my club to actually improve - not get worse :~

for me 7th IS regression
rem seasons
like last season and the season before, i could deal with 6th ...... IF ...........its by the odd point in a tough lge where it could be any team from 3 who actually finish 6th and we are clearly on the right track
(basically the "thats football sometime" syndrome)

but i EXPECT no less than solidifying 4th (with is CL is all but 2 Prem seasons* so far)

*since top 4 = CL

"Thanks u to have answer to my question lol lets be focus about the season now! Lol"

On the previous page people suggested they would be happy with 7th.

I don't want this thread to degenerate into a Redknapp slanging match so I will only say this once and I won't comment on him even if provoked, but people gave him short shrift and wanted him gone two seasons ago for finishing 5th and this season for finishing 4th. So It's poor that people are giving AVB so much slack if we finish three places lower than last season with essentially the same core group of players as last season. No doubt people will blame Redknapp if we have a poor season like Liverpool fans blamed Hodgson, but AVB will get all the credit if we get top 3.

Will it be though. Probably no Ade and likely no Modric. Gallas, King, Nelsen all gone or going. Parker and Brad - possibly one more season at most (and Parker tired badly at the end of last season). Defoe, Rose, Bassong, Bentley, Dos Santos, Pienaar and Jenas all want away. Pav, Kranchaar and Charlie are all gone. MASSIVE re-building required. Not the same team or squad at all.

AVB will frankly have to go some even to be spoken of in the same breath as Arry for me. Anything less than 5th will be totally unacceptable unless he wins us a trophy.

Bare in mind everyone our terrible end to the season and the lack of strength in depth due to the mismanagement of squad players. We seriously lacked fit options in defence, we lacked cover for the wingers and cover to replicate the way we play with Ade.

Look at our current squad of first team players below and tell me that you expect us to reach 4th place without adequate options up front, Athletic CBs, cover for the wings and a replacement for the potentially outgoing Modric. Redknapp has left us right up the creek without a paddle due to his horrible transfer strategy and man management. Looking at our squad below, i'd say the only positions we really are covered for are RB and DM; the other position are severely lacking in quality.

It would take a whole lot of money to transform the squad or a lot of luck with injuries to make sure we challenge for fourth.

Kaboul, Bale, Parker, Sandro, Dawson, Friedel, Ekotto, Lennon, Walker and Livermore at the very least will all be here and probably add Vertonghen, Sigurdsson and 1 or 2 new strikers to the mix. Don't why you mentioned Nelsen, losing him won't be a massive setback. Ditto for Jenas, Rose, Bassong, Pienaar etc!

Liverpool have to rebuild too so there's no way we should accept finishing below them.

Chelsea are going to be even worse than last season. No Drogba is a blow. All their ageing players one year older. but importantly, Di Matteo is a joke, he had a worse league record than the "disaster" that was AVB and absolutely spawned two cups undeservedly. Fair enough, it's a monstrous achievement; but they were pretty much awful in every game. This was when Di Matteo was in a win-win situation with no pressure; people were just thankful of the change and his played important matches straight away which papered over the awful performances and league form. Next season he won't have any of that. GONE BY CHRISTMAS.

Arsenal without Van Persie is a MUCH weaker team.

Liverpool... I can't believe we even consider these as peers anymore.

I really think 3rd.

Well they have now got rid of Anelka, Drogba and Alex which are 3 of them. I imagine Malouda will also go and Bosingwa and Kalou were released which is quite a hefty clear out from the start of last season.

Torres I think will have a decent season and they have got more attacking power with Marin and Hazard, Mata is now a season more experienced with them as is Sturridge (assuming he stays). They have Lukaku to come in as well and Oriel looked good last season.

I think they will have a pretty strong squad next year going on the above and I imagine they will sign one or 2 more.

I know what you mean, but maybe Harry was talking in the context of where the club was when HE took over.

We all know of BMJ's 5th place finishes, but Ramos was taking us into the Championship.

Ramos was 8 games into the season. Harry deliberately misrepresents the position.

Exactly my point. We have a huge rebuilding ahead of us. Let no-one be under any illusion of the scale of the task Arry left as his legacy.

Nelsen has already joined QPR.

No it wouldn't. We managed to finish 4th with that squad last season. We only need to make 3/4 new signings and make sure we hang on to Modric, easier said than done when it comes to Modric.
