Ben Davies

Didn’t a young Ryan Bertrand win the CL with Cheatski?
Davies is a good player and MouMou can utilise him

Don't agree. Tanganga at CB or RB for me.

Ive always thought of Davies as a solid if unspectacular player. However I do think Jose could take him up a level or two and he clearly rates him. I'm very interested to see how it works out.

Even based on his time here to date, Davies is our undisputed first choice left back now in my view.
I agree on Tanganga's best position being RB or CB, probably CB long term but I'm not convinced Davies can cut it against the very best opposition although he is steady against the lesser sides.
I hope he finds his best form and proves me wrong because we are looking a bit short in this position.

Davies is our fullback who gives me the least concern. Mourinho obviously likes him and he is very well suited to the system he has created to cover for Aurier's weaknesses, I expect to see a lot of him over the rest of the season and him to be in the team for all of the big games.

Let’s see how he does when/if he gets a chance. I’d be fine with his steady Eddie performances until the end of the season and then look to upgrade in the summer.

I think that he's going to be quite far down the list of priorities to upgrade in the summer and I doubt that we'd do that much business.

I would disagree with that. Given how vital the full back position has become I think we urgently need to upgrade both first choices as one is flakey and unreliable and the other one’s best quality is that he is mr reliable but doesn’t stand out in any other way. I’d say another striker, two new full backs and another CM should be the priority for the summer with another CB and GK slightly further down the list.

I think that it is also a little unfair to describe Davies as "steady Eddie". He doesn't have electric pace but his passing is pretty decent and he doesn't stand out as a defender because his positioning is good and rarely has to make recovery tackles. If we are going to continue with switching to a back three in attack with Aurier becoming a winger, he is going to be in the team, more often than not, when fit.

I'd have another CB above LB in the priority order at the moment given the rapid decline in Vertonghen and Mourinho appearing not to fancy Foyth. I agree that a CM and RB should be a priority for the summer.

I’d be disappointed to lose him as he is ideal cover for LB and CB. Your summary of him is very accurate. He also seems like a good, hard working, honest pro and I don’t mean that to sound disparaging or patronising but I just don’t feel he excels at anything and I honestly feel we should be aiming to bring someone in who is more of an X factor player like Robertson or Alexander-Arnold but I do concede those types of players don’t grow on trees.

If he can prove his fitness there’s room for him as a squad player, especially if we see him as a potential left footed centre back and Jose persists with the lb tucking in to make a back 3.

The attribute a ‘solid’ squad player needs is to stay fit so they can get games via rotation or injury as they won’t be first choice. This used to be a strength of Dier’s too and the reason I think we need to let Lamela go.

Intelligent, fantastic squad player. Doesn't have the pace or technical ability of maybe the best FBs but he's more of a CB/FB. Him and Rose complemented each other quite well. Sessegnon might evolve into an attacking FB. I think his strength are 1-2s flying up the pitch. Sessegnon's in his element doing that. Frustrating that we don't focus on getting him doing this, because it comes naturally to the kid, and he starts to look far more dynamic.

Aurier is an x factor player, and everyone (not me) think he should be thrown out of the club. So you would then replace the full back on the other side, who is one of the best and most reliable and steady FB in the league. Go figure. Or did you mean x factor like "player that dribbles past everyone, puts in pin point crosses every time, scores lots of goals, never misses a pass and never makes a mistake"?

I’m fully aware of Aurier’s strengths, he’s a very good footballer with good natural ability but he also comes with some serious baggage. I’d prefer a player of similar ability or hopefully better that doesn’t pick up silly bookings, red cards and doesn’t make stupid decisions, particularly in our penalty box. As Jamie Carragher says, he just can’t help himself. If he can cut that out of his game I’d be happy but alas I’m not sure he is capable.

Bottom line is he makes questionable decisions, on and also off the field from the sounds of it.

as a left of 3 CB he may be pretty good. I am not sure if he really had the opportunity under Poch as Verts was in his prime. It may be a revelation and clearly Jose has placed a lot of faith in him for his preferred system.

I do remember him playing a couple of games for us at CB, and he has done so quite a bit for Wales.

Hopefully when he comes back we return to the form we started with under Mourinho. We were playing well then, though it might have been the new manager bounce.
It must've been a very short new manager bounce if it coincided with Davies playing as I think he went off injured in Mourinho's very first game at the club?

A fully fit Davies is just what we need and still only 26 as well. I would be amazed if we went into the market for a replacement.

I wouldn’t be. He would have been fine for us 10 years ago when the club’s ambition was top 4/top 6. But we have moved on and have bigger goals. He’s just not quick enough nor does he excel at anything unfortunately. He does most things at 6/7 out of 10 but I think we need a player who is can reach 8 or 9 even if they have the odd shortcoming. Someone like Kyle Walker for example although I’m not suggesting we go for him.
