Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Which is weird as some of those characteristics we thought he had in spades.

Perhaps it's external expectations he has hassle dealing with as it's not hard to see that the final steps are the hardest to take and realistically we're close to our ceiling. BUT everyone wants year on year improvement.

We have gone from a team of a very distinct style and ethos, a successful one, to one that doesnt even seem to know the basics of the game half the time.

Under the same manager. Who has gone from a smart, assertive, ruthless manager able to get everyone singing his tune, to a pale imitation.

Why? I doubt we will ever really know.

My speculative effort - I think he might be burnt out. Its been an intensive 5 years, and he is frazzled.

Maybe the next international break we can book him into a spa, get him some therapy sessions, and dope his tea with some marching powder, I dont know - something to just clear the slate and give him a reset, so he can go again....

Perhaps it's also gone from 'Look what I've done for you Mr Levy' to 'Right Poch, everything s in place what you going to do for me'.....ie more onus on Poch.

Imo the fresh start has not begun in the manner he envisaged. He needs to not let that frustrate him and still focus on getting the day to day AND game day decisions right.

No it doesn't. If the accuracy is 30cm, and he's 31cm offside, he's definitely at least 1cm offside. Anything else, the equipment isn't accurate enough, and a judgement can't be made - everyone will just have to accept that. There will be no argument when a VAR screenshot shows someone 31cm offside.
If the accuracy is only 30cm, we don't know he's 30cm offside. If the rule is that only a 30cm gap counts then we don't know he's 30cm.

You're just moving an arbitrary line that requires an accuracy of 0 without changing the accuracy.

You could just as easily go 60cm the other way and have the same argument about guaranteeing the player is onside.

As it is, the point chosen is the middle ground between the two and just as valid as either.

Could well be, levels of demand/expectation shifting has him feeling the pressure?

I have no doubt he wanted something of a clear out/rebuild, that much is obvious. I do find it very hard to understand that rebuild not going absolutely perfectly leading to this situation though. Its like he didnt get his way and has lost his head, teenage tantrum style...

Which runs contra to everything I ever thought of him until now.

Short response again, why do I even bother...? ;)

We do only view through a small window, from the outside.

I think we can all agree though, things really arent right and something needs to change.

My hope is that Poch starts owning it all, making some tough calls, some brave ones, and getting more out of what he has at his disposal.

Id much prefer that than to see him leave, thats for sure.

Agree with all of that! A victory for internet forums everywhere!

I agree. And to add to the teenage analogy, he says stuff and stirs things up .....then needs clear the air talks/meetings to make him feel alright again.

Rather than ongoing grown up dialogue.

If a player is 21cm off, the extremes he could be are either 1cm off, or 41cm off. Either way, he's off. Conclusive.
If a player is 1cm off, the extremes he could be are either 21cm off, or 19cm on. Inconclusive, and you can't use it to judge.
We're talking about picture frames here, not the naked eye.
Actually, I'm not sure why they are using picture frames. Watch the replay in normal time and make a decision. If its too close to call, he's on.

It seems...

I mean, we literally can only speculate, we see fragments of events/consequences of unseen events and will never really know whats actually going on.

The great concern for me is how not-Poch Poch seems right now.

We have gone from a team of a very distinct style and ethos, a successful one, to one that doesnt even seem to know the basics of the game half the time.

The easy fix is to go back to our distinct style while we build a squad again, so in 18 months when we have at least 16-18 of the squad who see themselves at the club for the following 5 years then we can experiment with different formations.

The other thing is that our style of play was meant to have be introduced from the 1st team all the way down to academy level.

If that's the case how can we then abandon it so readily.

Perhaps after the squad burn out/injuries etc that seemed to be mounting after 4 years of the previous style it lead him to rethink how we should play, maybe 4 years of being nearly-men made him look for another approach? Can only guess the reasons why but it seems evident that there was a concious decision to depart from the high pressing game that we saw up to the beginning of last season - so abandonning such a tactical shift and reverting back to the previous style (therefore admitting failure of the new ideas) isn't something id expect to see happen at the drop of a hat - though the Palace game recently might have been a step towards that, but really i think Pochettino is someone who will give things more time than most to prove whether it works or not, be that tactical or player selections as we saw with the likes of Adebayor & co in his first season and Mason/Bentaleb thereafter

But at 19cm he might be offside and we'd be calling him onside - still a 1cm margin.

Patient for a year and a half? During a period where we’ve finished top 4 twice and got to a CL final? This is kind of what I mean - managers and players becoming victims of their own success to some extent. We’ve arguably not had as good an 18 months in the last 30 years outside of Poch’s time here! It just frustrates me sometimes that so many fans show so little loyalty or perspective - it’s all ‘what have you done for me lately’.

Its all well and good finishing in the top 4 and being in a Champions League final but what have we won? We almost bottled the top 4 last season, finished 3rd in a 2 horse race and lost a champions league final against a Liverpool team who probably played their worst game of the season. If we had actually went out swinging there wouldn’t be a problem but we are playing fudging awful and using nearly winning something as an excuse.

There is a reason we are being left behind by City and Pool.

It’s the difference between the terms “accuracy” and “precision”
