Everything you say could be true, probably is, but it could be Woodward's best buy. He could do the job of shoring up the United defence. Compare that to the Sanchez or Fred buys and its a bargain.

Relativity is one thing, but one maybe good buy relative to some terrible buys all from the same club/board is hardly an endorsement of good business!
It might suggest they are getting better at it - by their own standards, but thats not the same as good business....
I dont think Maguire is a good enough defender, or leader, to single handedly shore up their defence.
I do think he is an improvement on Smalling/Jones, but what he offers really is the ability to bring the ball into midfield - thereby pushing midfielders up the pitch and getting the team into preferable positions...
Defensively Im not convinced he will bring a huge amount to the table. If they leave him as exposed as they left their defenders last year, he's going to struggle.
£80m is a huge amount to pay for that sort of relative improvement.

Transfer fees are beyond a joke in todays game and you either pay them or lose out. Utd have been brick at CB for several seasons, Maguire is 4 years younger then Toby and will get better as he goes along.

Still it is brilliant/crazy that united didn't snap Toby up. Toby's experience, deep passing ability, mentali1y probably trump Maguire. So pleased they shelled out 80m on Maguire instead! He's very good, but not quite as good as Toby at his best.

The Saudi Sportswashing Machine midfielder has been on United's radar all summer, with the Red Devils initially confident over a £20million deal
Manchester United could end up paying a huge £70million to sign Sean Longstaff next summer after Ed Woodward dithered over the deal.
That's according to the Mail Online , who claim that Red Devils were confident of signing the Saudi Sportswashing Machine United youngster for around £20million this summer, only for the club to stutter over the deal in negotiations led by executive vice-chairman Woodward.
It is now said that United are 'likely' to have to pay up to £50million more for Longstaff than they initially planned to, with the 21-year-old primed for a real breakout season in the Premier League following fleeting appearances for the Magpies in the last campaign.
Longstaff played 11 times for Saudi Sportswashing Machine last season, following on from loan spells with Kilmarnock in Scotland and League One side Blackpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has long identified Longstaff as a key addition for his United midfield, which lacked dynamism and youth in recent seasons.
But Woodward's skills as a businessman and generator of commercial revenue have never quite been able to tally with success in the transfer market, and he has always found the acquisition of players and the selling of others to be a much more complicated task.

Manchester United may be forced to pay a significant amount if Alexis Sanchez is to end his Old Trafford nightmare after the true extent of his contract details were revealed.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly keen to get rid of the 30-year-old, who has suffered a miserable spell at United which has seen him score just five times in 45 appearances.
He was left out of the squad for the side's 4-0 win over Chelsea on the first game of the season due to concerns over his fitness and was reportedly involved in a training ground bust-up with Mason Greenwood this week.
However, getting him out of the club is not proving to be an easy task due to his astronomical earnings.
According to the Daily Mail Sanchez takes home a staggering basic salary of £300,000 a week, as well as a net payment of £100,000 a week which he receives from a £5million-a-year image rights deal.
In addition, United are required to pay £5m in agent's fees to his representative Fernando Felicevich over the course of the contract, and all of this together with additional bonuses take the total overall figure to an eyewatering £560,000 a week.
It is little wonder, then, that there are currently no clubs willing to take the risk on signing an injury-prone and out-of-form Sanchez, and United may have to pay at least some of his salary themselves to get him off the books.
His most likely destination appears to be Italy, with the likes of Juventus , Inter Milan and Napoli linked with a move, but none of them can afford to pay a transfer fee or match Sanchez's extravagant salary.
With just over two weeks to go until Italy's transfer window slams shut on 2 September, time is running out to get through a deal for Sanchez.
It remains to be seen if he is involved in the United team which takes on Wolves at Molineux on Monday night.
