Christian Eriksen

To describe Eriksen as 'going missing' in big games is both misleading and frankly disrespectful. It's simply the wrong phraseology.

It's not that he 'goes missing' as such, no one puts more into any game than he does, ever! It's much more a question of him sometimes getting snuffed out by the superior tactics, speed and sheer physicality of the opponent.

He can get starved of possession by teams like Liverpool that will instantly set two, three or four frenzied players on whoever happens to be in possession at any one time. The result is Eriksen will see much less of the ball because his colleagues struggle to get it through to him, and then when they do succeed, he in turn will immediately be surrounded by manic midfielders determined to close down his options and rob him of possession.

Whereas a stronger and much trickier player like Hazard, when he turns up, does have the requisite trickery to bamboozle even a crowd of players and produce that bit of magic.

So Hazard is allowed to not turn up, but still be regarded as a top player, but Eriksen has to dominate every single game to get the same label.
OK I get it!
I mean that’s not what I said and you seem to keep twisting what I say so I don’t see the point in debating. No player hasn’t not gone missing in games, obviously. Difference between Hazard and Eriksen is he has been the difference in cup finals and literally single handedly won big games in the league and Cups for Chelsea. Look at all the semis and finals we’ve been in, when has Eriksen stepped up in any of them and said I’m the man, I’ve got the talent to win this for us? Why is it that when discussing best player in the world Hazard always gets talked about? Eriksen doesn’t even come close to being in the conversation. Why is it that Hazard was so readily snapped up with a year left on his contract, yet Eriksen is left wondering if anyone is showing an interest? If you want to think Eriksen is on the same level as Hazard then fine, sometimes he certainly can be but on a consistency basis Hazard is well ahead for me.....

Indeed, but we haven't a single player in our squad who has consistently stepped up and single handedly won us big games. Hazard is probably one of those top 5 or so players in the World who can do this.

Exactly, which is why Hazard is world class and Eriksen is a level below that, being WC is a very elite group of players. I very much want him to stay, if he was hungrier I don’t doubt he could go up a level, he has the talent. I wonder if someone like Dele who has more of that ‘edge’ that the true top players demonstrate will end up going further than him....

So it's everyone's fault but Eriksens, good one.

It's not that it's everyone else's fault, it's more he simply doesn't have the skills to thrive in those conditions, Hazard does. It's very much the reason why I think neither Barca or Real are completely convinced by the prospect of signing him.

In a better midfield with players who can actually get the ball to him early (ie. Ndoumble), he might perform better in such games due to having more time rather than being instantly pressured but it remains to be seen. If he does stay I hope so.

And Hazard has also not turned up at all in finals, even though he has the talent as you say. The point you are trying to make is completely invalid.

Yeah, Hazard was awful in the Europa League final with those two goals. And so poor winning and taking the penalty that won them the FA Cup too.

Eriksen has games where he fails to make an impact, or gets marked out of the game. As does Hazard. And Messi. And every other player in the world of team sports. I dislike Chelsea as much as anyone, but to claim that Eden Hazard is anything other than a top, top player is just silly in my book. I'd gladly swap him for Eriksen in a hypothetical scenario, where the latter has made up his mind about leaving us.

It is amazing how predictable fans can be sometimes. Just because he has intimated that he wants to move people are coming out of the woodwork regaling us of how ineffective he has been for us. Apart from my irritation about the quality of his corners I am not going to start slagging him off.

The bottom line is that he has been good for us and us good for him. If he wants to move I have no problem with that and I bear no grudge against him. On the other hand just because he "makes my pants sticky" I am not one who believes we can move forward with out his creativity. Poch will simply have to devise another way.

My only wish is that this saga ends, and soon.

Are you saying you don't ever recall him previously recieving some criticism of his effectiveness? Now sure there are the band wagon jumpers who will feel emotionally and react negatively to him expressing a desire to leave but let's not pretend he's never been called out for this before this summer.

I think he's been a great player for us, but he's not perfect and let's not pretend he is. If we have to move on from him so be it. As long as we replace him wisely it's not the end of the world, especially having addressed the biggest weakness in the side, namely the lack of quality on the centre of midfield.

Don't think that is a fair comment. There is no doubt that Eriksen made us tick but it is also a fact that if we look back at our big games, there are few that I can remember where I said "wow, Eriksen took the game by the scruff of the neck and won it for us". Kane has done it, Alli has done, Son has done and Moura also did it against Ajax.

That does not mean Eriksen was not a crucial cog in the past 5 years - he was, big time - but it does not eliminate the fact that when the semi-finals and finals came around, he was always a shadow of his normal self; unlike Hazard who regularly steps up and takes responsibility and influence in the big games.

He has had people questioning these aspects of his game/mentality for pretty much the whole time he has been here.

IMO anyway, the biggest issues we had last season were -

Being too reliant on Eriksen as the way we played.
Overusing him.
Injuries to players who help him be “more”.
Him being distracted and getting tired.
Him, ultimately, not being at his best.

Fatigue nearly knocked us out in Manchester.

I think Poch made the decision to never, ever go into a season again so reliant on one player in “that” sense.

Again, what Poch did last season was one of the greatest jobs a manager has done in recent times, though I still wonder if the VAR had gone against us in Manchester whether we’d be Thursday nights?

who are erikesne's advisors? if they are the same one who advised him coming to spurs, perhaps it was an idea gone awry. based on his performances last few seasons, he would have been better off just accepting a new higher paying contract - it wouldn't have mattered, barce/real would still be able to trump our highest earners! look at hazard.

Trying to understand why he didn't sign a new contract. To make it easier for clubs to sign him? Who loses in that scenario? Spurs as we wouldn't get as much? Him as his wage is stuck at 2 to 3 years ago? The only winners are prospective clubs.

Players that don't want to play for the club going forward only do that. It happened at arsenal and the only reason for not signing a contract is to get a higher wage in the long term and more offers than you would have if you were tied down on a longer contract. Players are legally allowed to do that but I have never agreed with it. Clubs fork out a lot of money to secure your employment and all you do is throw it back in their face, when you're already a multi millionaire and could afford to retire 100 times over. This is why I want Eriksen gone sooner and whilst he has been a good player for us I don't really wish him that well going forward. I hope wherever he goes to he's a failure. He should have signed a contract and then said spurs can look to sell him. It's about respect and he's showed us none whatsoever IMO. He's not the first and won't be the last but I don't agree with it and never will.

Then again more fool us for not trying to sell him last year.
