Christian Eriksen

His stats are still on par for most season with games left - 5 goals and 9 assists - he did 10 and 10 last season - 8 and 15 the season before and given our poor finishing in games/World cup affect they could be higher.

Even if his stats are down this season it may just be a blip.

Ive seen us be linked to a swap with Bale, which would be madness in my mind.

Isco would make much more sense. Not like-for-like but much closer to what we would need and more of our typical sort of profile.

Bale, as wonderful as he is, would be a bit part player thanks to injury (which will only worsen), Ive said Im 50/50 on it elsewhere but honestly Id be more against than for.

Stats are one thing, performances are another, and I do believe this season Eriksen has been well below what he has been and could (should?) be.

That said, as above, thats not to say I want him gone or anything like it. Rather just that if he did go I think we would be ok.

Hopefully it is a blip, hopefully its the contract uncertainty getting to him, and he signs a new deal and then steps up his game to where we know it can be.

As it stands though? I really dont think there is much of a defence for him, he just isnt playing that well.

You see thats the point - you make allowances for him because he needs certain criteria to be able to perform.

Have a think about what that actually says about him.

My view? He has enough quality that who he plays with can be basically irrelevant, he is good enough to perform regardless. But right now he doesnt.

As noted above, he works wonders for Denmark and Im not sure there is anyone in that team that would make ours...

I'm making allowances for ALL our attacking players on the whole tbh. Our CM are affecting all of them tbh.
I'm sure one thing that couldn't be labelled at Denmark's midfield is it lacking a robust centre that stops them being vulnerable in the middle whereby losing the ball can immediately lead to a direct attack on the defence due to the fact that no-one is adept at being that 'tackler' in the centre.

Eriksen is going through a dip in form for sure but i'd be hesitant on using this particular period to judge him too negatively: he's having to be our most important attacker and cover loads of ground and be a defensive midfielder as well, just look at the game on Saturday for example. Plus he is literally being run into the ground: when was the last time he was able to start a game on the bench?

It wasnt an issue for Son until the last few games. Kane is on track for a bucket load of goals again. Even Llorente is getting goals.

Our attacking players are doing their jobs, regardless of how poor our CM is.

Eriksen? Isnt.

Given the lack of quality in midfield he should be owning it. Taking charge and making us tick. It would be fairer to say he has been basically anonymous. Sissoko is taking the initiative more even though he is completely ill equipped for the job! All the while Eriksen is just drifting around.

You may disagree, but IMO the whole "he hasnt runners" thing and "our CM isnt that good" are total red herrings and rater limp excuses for him.

He has the ability to be doing MUCH more than he is.

Eriksen i bet has some of the highest distance covered stats in the PL so the effort as usual is there. I'm also pretty sure he is our highest assister this season too, like he has been most seasons since being with us.
It's the lack of defensive midfield nous in the team that i think is the issue for him taking more risks going forward (and for all our attacking midfield tbh) and Son is more of a striker than Eriksen is so not sure that's so relevant. Btw, Son has also dipped recently like Eriksen since the last Dortmund game - coincidence? I think not..

Is the issue with Eriksen the number of goals he's scoring? Is it his corners? Is it his tackling?

Running ie irrelevant, he ran a lot against Burnley but funked out a tacke/block that led to goal.
He used to block lanes but now he is constantly the wrong side of his man when they have the ball.

So a dip in form like i say, and one more noticable now that teams are now realising that our cm issues can be exposed big time and hence going for the jugular right through our (soft:() centre..

Running doesnt mean a thing. Its not a contribution in and of itself.

I could spend 90 minutes running round the centre circle, covering more distance than everyone else in the side and yet be about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

There are two points to Eriksen that I can see, and neither have a thing to do with our CM or lacking runners and whatever else excuses keep getting thrown up

1) He is well below his "normal" form and has been for some time.
2) His "normal" form is actually well below what he *should* be doing because we all know what he can be capable of.

So, what should Eriksen be doing that he isn't presently - apart from scoring long-range screamers and getting his corners beyond the first man?

There's that many variables just now on why his form has dropped, tiredness, injuries around him, contract situation etc.
We need to find out why and is it something we can fix.
I would bench him for tonight, he either needs the rest or a shake.

Getting involved would be a start.
He always seems to be stuck in two minds about what he should be doing or where he should be.
I don't blame him for the corners, he if can't get the ball past the first man he shouldn't be taking them. And if he's being told to put it into that area and we aren't winning the ball that's not his fault. Either way that's down to poch carrying on with either player or system fault.
What puzzles me about corners is Trippier, lamela and Rose all put it into the mix.

The corners are a bit meh i agree, but not the biggest issue as there are others who could take them.

I think his form and getting in two minds as you mention is a system issue and ultimately an issue that we are lacking bodies and have simply played Eriksen into the ground

I'd love to bench him myself - he NEEDS are rst (as well as a kick up the backside) but alas we haven't got many options because of lack of options...

Nope - just want to narrow it down to see if people are actually being unrealistic and are not taking into account our current issues in CM..

As much as youve convinced yourself, the CM thing isnt even a factor in the conversation.

The CM being poorer than we are used to doesnt change the fact that Eriksen should be stepping up and dictating more for us, showing his quality and trying to drive the team on.

Ok then, when did Eriksen stop doing this? I'm sure he was getting plaudits for doing just that earlier in the season...

He has always been intermittent, but usually more good than bad.

Though I would say as well he has ALWAYS had a lot more to offer as well.

This season? I was applauding him for doing subtle things well early in the season, wasnt on form but was defending him against some slating him - but he has most certainly NOT been dictating our play and driving this team on.

Id say he hasnt been particularly good all year, but has been decidedly flat since Christmas.
