The Goon Thread

Yeh that goes against what I read but those three are the crown jewels.

Maybe all hot air who knows but I think the expensive mistakes as mentioned before will make clubs rethink when giving big money out. Even Jack Whilshire deal to West Ham is proving overly costly

I believe it's the wage increase rule that is holding them back rather than not having money to spend - you can only increase your wage budget in line with your revenue growth (or something like that) and with them missing out on CL seeing their revenue fall it makes increasing their wage budget a bit of a no go

Maybe but maybe also a case of the money not really being repaid in performance.

Ramsey being talked about now as one of the best paid British players ever at Juve, he is not the type of player even before the talk of consistency to warrent that money and I think thats where clubs are maybe thinking of being more shrewed.

In Spurs case paying kane 200k a week is justified because he is without doubt the best player in the team and its an easy conversation to have. You pay Danny Rose 150k a week and you get every TD and Harry knocking on the door demanding more.

As someone on here mentioned before, its what happens when you bust BIG money on average players.

Over the past 4 years City have paid high wages but with a relatively low base (I say relatively as they would be around our top earners) with achievable bonuses. The latest round of contracts seem to have higher bases as they need to keep ahold of their top earners. The easiest way to see that wages are not really going down is to look at their published books which show the overall wage level - this is not exact science obviously but gives an indication (this is without taking into account "sponsorship deals" from outside the club but linked to Abu Dhabi)

Which should come as a surprise to absolutely no one.

Its hilarious really. Just shows how West Ham are so desperate for credibility. And, irony being, every desperate attempt at big club kudos just makes them look small time!

Some moves are a more genuine surprise. Sanchez at Utd has performed worse than I ever anticipated he would.

Even on form he was over priced, but now? That ones going to sting...

If it leads to a bit more caution that can only be a good thing

Yeh correct on both points I think. The Sanchez was a funny one because as you say even on form thats a huge over payment, now it looks even worse.

Financial Fair Play rules that were drawn up to protect clubs like ARSEnal screwing them over now that they’ve been condemned to the purgatory of Europa League :D

It is why it is so important we finish above them and keep them out of the champs league.

We also need the press to come out and put pressure on them and say there players will leave if they have a 3rd straight season in the Europa league as they always seemed to say with such relish to spurs fans.

The is a young lad at work, 28 So not young young. Has been telling me every shift I have worked for 18 months that we are losing Kane, Poch. Shouted at me the other morning that we are pathetic because we can't build a stadium.

I said to him in the staff room at lunch, I here you lot can't afford to buy players now. He launched into a loud rude aggressive tirade about pretty much everything. Saw him sat on the forklift just now looking really depressed.

It is the first time I have responded to him. Not sure why people give it if they can't take it and not sure why people place so much of their self worth in the success of the football team they support. Also not sure why so many Arsenal fans share so many negative personality traits.

Pretty sure they are all scared which is why we get so much more attention from them now.

At 28, he is probably too young to remember a big club falling away. The Arsenal and United fans in my office, who are in their 20's, cannot comprehend that them being outside the top four is anything other than a blip.

Surely at 28, they would remember Leeds. From Champions League semi final to League one in what 7 years? I think they were top 6 for about 5 years in a row. Not top 6 for as long as Utd and Arsenal have sustained their presence though.

O'Leary left Leeds 17 years ago, they are not going to remember much about it.

Singing you’re not West Ham anymore earlier
From the clib that went from Woolwich to Highbury to Ashburton Grove
Simply fudge off you taco’s

Do we know how much they have lost over the last few years since they went to brick? I mean has the loss of CL money had a huge impact on their finances?

FWIW... being stuck in Europa League purgatory cost them about £23million last season.

And they’re now burning through their (infamous) cash reserves to try and catch back up with us...
