Summer 2018 transfer thread

Sounds a bit odd if that was Pochettinos original meaning of what he supposedly told Levy though - surely he would already have Levy's blessings to use the youngsters as he see fit.

Anyhow - no need to read too much into the comment Poch said after Leicester. I'm sure he understands the market as well, and the we can't just go out and buy just about anyone for whatever sum. I see people on Twitter speculating whether he could be off to Real Madrid if Lopetegui has a crap season etc etc - but it's all a bit too catastrophical for me.

We'll be fine. I reckon we'll sign Zaha and Graelish and probably a third one late on too. :)

Imagine how dejected you would have been writing that sentence in May. The media hype around transfer shouldn't cause you to settle for not good enough

Yeah, but we knew the World cup and the early closing of (only) the English window would make it difficult. I'd love for all transfer windows to shut on August 1st, but it makes no sense that it's just the English. I can appreciate it being difficult to sign anyone this summer. Grealish and Zaha aren't the most exciting prospects, perhaps, but maybe that's good - I'm sure people would be more excited about Malcom, for instance, without really knowing how good he is. Maybe Zaha and Grealish will shine, if they end up signing for us.

Maybe that's another reason Levy is leaving it so late to wrap up these deals. If they had signed in may and June we would have been very unsatisfied but now it's so late that unsatisfaction will turn into immense gratitude that we have actually signed someone

The baldy is a genius

Nothing to do with media hype would be happy with those two acquisitions. Zaha provides us proven PL quality and different options for us to vary our attack and formations, and another talented English youngster for Poch to further develop. Don’t care how much they cost, if we sign them Poch and Levy are in agreement they’re good investments at whatever price we purchase and that’s good enough for me....

What is this home grown rule? How many do we need and if we are short in numbers can't we just promote kids like Georgiou, Amos and Skipp to increase the count

If it's not permitted we will just have to accept Zaha, Grealish and Shelvey as our new homegrownso_O

We don't need any set number of homegrowns

The problem is we have 2 too many oversees players to name in the EPL squad, and 3 too many to name in the CL squad (because bizarrely Davies counts as oversees there as he spent time as a schoolboy in Denmark)

But remember these too many include Janssen and Nkoudou for starters. Whereas players like Martial and De Ligt would replace Llorente and Alder like-for-like. Dembele will likely leave too if replaced etc.

£120m for two players who wouldn't get in our matchday squad if everyone is fit. Let that sink in

Who has said we need to sign £70m plus players to improve the squad?

There have been numerous postings in this thread and others saying the only way we can improve things is to sign world class players because the quality of the squad is so high and then going on to suggest the price of those players is in that bracket.

Whilst I see the point you're making, I personally think it ignores a vital aspect of Poch's work, notably that signings have to have the right character and fit into his philosophy. I am not saying these players could not, but you have to think there is a reason we have not even looked at most of them. I mean seriously, Nainggolan? Good player but do you really think he would fit in with our dressing room? In fact, the longer I look at the list of names you put forward, the further I am convinced that we are doing the right thing by whatever system it is Poch has the club working on. Talent? Not denying you might be right. But it is about more than that. Without the chemistry it would not work. Remember the "super 7"!

I agree, we seem to have a great mentality and level of character and everyone gets along. On he flipside whilst we perform well we are still missing something mentality wise e.g. near enough every game against top teams we go a goal behind early for instance so maybe something needs to give there.

It may all work out well but this is the 2nd season in a row we're going into the last 10 days without a single transfer, in this league you can't stand still or you soon get overtaken. Maybe our transfers haven't come through but I'm more worried we've not been seriously linked with anyone yet, I know it's all speculation but there's been nothing concrete at all apart from the Grealish links all summer.

I think the Zaha one makes sense as currently I do not think we have anyone with any skill to get past players other than maybe Alli. But Zaha has trickery and pace and can beat a man without having to use his pace. I cant think of anyone who we currently have like that, can you? £70m is massive but if we can get him for £50m then in this market its a good deal. If he can score 8 goals or more then great. He's never going to score 20 as that will be Kane's job but he will be the provide for Kane whilst chipping in with some goals. The more I see us linked with Zaha the more I want him.

Yeah, I like Zaha as well, but not quite sure how we'll fit him in if he expects to start every game. I assume he'll take up the same role as Son/Lucas, but potentially also as a Kane sub if needed? Poch likes versatiles players. If we got him for 50 mill, I'd say that would be a good signing. Come to think of it, seeing as Son will be away with Korea for some time, he might slot right in. Same with Graelish, considering our lack of CM's currently (or is he more of an Eriksen type AM?).

I would have been delighted with Zaha back in May. A bit more sceptical about Grealish, though Ive warmed to the idea since - and thats nothing to do with "transfer pressure" or media narrative.

Spoken as fact, in true GB style, when its utterly unreliable - as usual. At the outside Ive seen rumors of £70m and £40 for the players respectively. We'll never pay that for either, but just slap £10m on top and make it sound absolute - why not?

We are looking at 60+ games, sometimes 3 in a week/4 in 10 days. Nobody can expect to start every game.

We have moved into territory where its about the squad, not the team.

Its obviously difficult to 'prove' whether we'd be more successful or not by employing a transfer policy where we accepted paying more in order to get deals done earlier in the window.

However its obviously indisputable that waiting like we do is more risky given that is someone gazumps you, or there is some logistically failure, or the player has a change or heart etc, then we have very limited / no time to change targets.

We've been successful in recent years, but I'd be reluctant to say its because of our transfer policy. Feels more despite our transfer policy

I definitely wouldn't say we've been successful because of the transfer policy. I don't think it's a coincidence that we start the season slowly more often than not, maybe partly because we leave it so late to get deals done?

That's why we signed Moura. He's just been forgotten about because he's no longer shiny and new
