Coronavirus

I was just looking at the number there and America's new cases reported on monday was 10,411.
Only China has ever reported more new cases in a single day. And that was the day China changed how cases were diagnosed and reported in Hubei province. So it included lots of "probable" old cases previously unreported.
They are completely fudged over there.

Sorry mate what you are claiming does not marry up with what @milo mentions his friend has experienced.

In situations such as these, (ie national emergencies) we should be looking throughly at all the resources this country has and can put in to play.

If this government cant do that now, then it's not fit for purpose.
What's the real end result of a lab having been missed here or there?

That's not the problem. The problem is that our healthcare setup is 70 years out of date. All the services that feed it suffer from it. Even with all the labs running all the time, we still couldn't get near Germany's production levels.

It's a nice idea your last statement, unfortunately our government has to work in the real world. No decision is without cost. We can't put everything we have into solving this one problem, because that will just create hundreds of other problems.

The balancing act is to reduce the deaths as far as possible without breaking everything else. The govt are doing a very good job of that so far.

Maybe the message got through but the costs of the inconvenience of social distancing are beginning to outweigh the perceived benefits.

Maybe they've spent far too much time uprooting their lives already and they don't accept "hide away until all the big scary brick goes away" as an acceptable tactic from the govt.

It's not hiding. It's behaving like a human and not a selfish fudging clam who can't think of consequence beyond themself.

Whilst ignoring what is happening in New York in terms of infection rate

US President Donald Trump has said he hopes the US will shake off coronavirus by Easter, even as New York's governor sounded the alarm that the illness is spreading faster than "a bullet train".

The president told a White House news briefing reopening the US early next month would be "a beautiful timeline".

Hours later, the Senate agreed a $2 trillion (£1.7tn) economic rescue plan with the White House.

The deal will be passed later on Wednesday by the Senate.

"At last, we have a deal," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, citing the massive "wartime level of investment into our nation".

The package includes tax rebates, loans, money for hospitals and rescue packages for businesses.

The House of Representatives still needs to pass the legislation before it is sent to Mr Trump for his signature.

The US has recorded almost 55,000 cases and nearly 800 deaths from coronavirus.

Globally there have been more than 420,000 cases confirmed and approaching 19,000 deaths.

What did President Trump say?

On Tuesday, he told Fox News he hoped the country could get back to normal by Easter, which is on 12 April.

Mr Trump, a Republican, said: "We're going to be opening relatively soon... I would love to have the country opened up and just rearing to go by Easter."

He added in a subsequent interview: "Easter is a very special day for me... and you'll have packed churches all over our country."

Mr Trump also warned that unless the country reopened for business it could suffer "a massive recession or depression".

The president said: "You're going to lose people. You're going to have suicides by the thousands. You're going to have all sorts of things happen. You're going to have instability."

Maybe they're not thinking only of themselves. Maybe they realise that hiding away for a year will be worse than getting it over with now.

I don't really see anything wrong with that tbh.
Surely we all hope for this to be over as soon as possible?
He's trying to be positive and give bad news in small bites. People are more likely swallow that. Tell them you are isolated until further notice then they will start to kick much quicker.

Always check your sauces.

Firstly you've quoted the Grauniad - the only major newspaper capable of getting all of their opinion pieces wrong, all of the time.

Secondly, the article quotes people from Greece and Ireland - two of the least relevant countries to anything ever (at least for the last few millennia).

Thirdly, your sauce quotes Ethnos - basically Greece's Socialist Worker. Bought only by its most lefty of peasants whenever they can steal enough from the rest of Europe to pay for it.
