OT: Penalties

Superted

Is it just me, or does it seem that these days you see more penalties that don't convert. Anyone ever seen some stats on this.

I remember years ago, you'd chalk down a penalty as a goal, no question. Didn't Lineker never miss a penalty until the 1990 FA Cup Final?

Baguio and Le Tissier had phenomenal records with penalties too.

Yes, I've kept a very close eye on Premier League penalty statistics over the past decade or so...

Nice. It does seem to show a trend towards more misses and saves.

From the numbers in the link:

Season ______ %scored ______ %missed _____ %saved ___ % fails
2002-03 _______ 85.94 _______ 3.13 _______ 10.94 _______ 14.06
2003-04 _______ 83.54 _______ 3.80 _______ 12.66 _______ 16.46
2004-05 _______ 83.78 _______ 2.70 _______ 13.51 _______ 16.22
2005-06 _______ 76.71 _______ 4.11 _______ 19.18 _______ 23.29
2006-07 _______ 80.00 _______ 2.86 _______ 17.14 _______ 20.00
2007-08 _______ 74.39 _______ 4.88 _______ 20.73 _______ 25.61
2008-09 _______ 80.72 _______ 9.64 _______ 9.64 _______ 19.28
2009-10 _______ 80.19 _______ 1.89 _______ 17.92 _______ 19.81
2010-11 _______ 78.22 _______ 7.92 _______ 13.86 _______ 21.78
2011-12 _______ 71.72 _______ 6.06 _______ 22.22 _______ 28.28
2012-13 _______ 66.67 _______ 33.33 _______ 0.00 _______ 33.33
TOTALS _______ 79.00 _______ 5.22 _______ 15.78 _______ 21.00

Keepers definitely do far more research on opposition penalty takers than previously....

The misses seem to be up as well. Compared to 2002-2005, the saves are up as you would expect from more goalkeeper preparation, but the misses are up more (nearly twice as many).

I would think this is pretty much the same thing - keepers save more - so takers have to put more into it, or get closer to the posts - and end up missing the target (quite how you can miss the target flabbergasts me but then I guess the pressure is high)

Possibly. If keepers are getting, the players have to try harder. At a stretch you could argue that the saves went up before (2005-08) the misses (2008-09) but the data are too noisy for that to be a sound conclusion.

The thing that makes me doubt it are the quality of the failed attempts. Many of the misses are blasts over the bar rather than placed shots just wide of the post. And a lot of the saves are pathetic shots in the centre. Too many carthorses trying to Pirlo.

So I'd put it down to a mix of better goalkeeping and more bad decisions under pressure by the takers, though I couldn't say why the pressure is more now. Possibly because the league is more competitive. Or perhaps the better goalkeeping creates the extra pressure and is the main factor.

if there are more misses over the bar then maybe the lighter balls are a factor

distribution of misses across a season (as players get used to the new ball) would be interesting

If I was a manager, I would take a gun to the head of any player that stuttered their run , I would happily say with no evidence other than my own two peepers that more pens are missed this way than any other.

1) Know where you're going before you walk to the ball
2) Don't change your mind unless the keeper reacts first
3) Never break your stride
4) Place it into the side of the net

More pens are scored this way than any other, I'll guarentee you. Seriously, I would fine a player for getting cute with a pen, even if he scored it.

Good point on the ball. I think it would also make it easier for the keeper to parry the ball away rather than just slow it down on the way into the net.

When did the lighter ball come in? The 2006 world cup?
