Do you watch your national team?

I just got off the phone with my dad, and he asked me "are you watching the game tonight?" - and I asked "what game?" - and he answered, with disbelief in his voice, that Norway was playing an important game tonight.

I had no clue. I pay no attention to the national team these days, what so ever. Norway have some very good young players now (Haaland, Ødegaard and a few others), but I just can't be bothered. Norway has been dross for so long, and I'm older as well, I just don't have time to watch this national team crap.

The world cup and the Euros are good fun, although Norway are never in it. I used to be really into watching it, cheering like a madman if Norway scored (I still vividly remember when Norway beat Brazil in the 1998 world cup) - but I'm just not there anymore. I wonder if I would even cheer for a goal if Norway scored in a world cup. Maybe I would, but I feel like this whole national team thing has just withered away for me.

Anyways, I'm ranting. What's your relationship with watching your national team? How is it now compared to when you were younger?
 
No.

I like International tournaments, but I'll watch those whoever is playing. Friendlies and qualifiers I have no interest in.

I kinda want England to win, but more because I was conditioned to as a kid by seeing my Dad want England to win than any kind of nationalism.

Also, at the minute it's more minutes in legs of our players that doesn't benefit us, and the England team is full of clams.

Norway have been quite brick for the best part of the last 20 years, and my interest has fallen proportional with how brick thay have been.
However, this generation of players look promising, and with Ståle Solbakken in as a new coach, I'm quite excited to see how they'll get on. Should be a comprehensive win tonight, considering we play Gibraltar. Worth a bet on a Haaland Hat-trick tonight.
 
If it happens to be on, I'll watch a qualifier (or even worse, a friendly), but I don't go out of my way. I think Ingerland have got San Marino tomorrow, what's the point?

International tournament football though, I'll always watch. Great stuff. Just not that fussed about the rigmarole getting there.
 
Used to watch all the England games and the big tournaments, now i may watch one or two but not drawn to it like i used too. I started falling out of love with the England circus under Sven and that love has not really returned.
 
The current format of International football is for people from the smaller countries.
I enjoyed watching Ireland tonight more than I have watching Spurs under Mourinho.

But I can see why England or France fans have no interest until the tournaments.
For the big teams that always qualify these game are like Europa League group games.

To us though every international game is important.
 
I am English, if they are on I will watch but mainly because I like scouting football matches which is why I watch so many league games in France and Germany.

I dont support England when they play and would feel no pride if they ever won anything where as I would feel pride if spurs won something, and slightly concerned at the impending end of the world.

Mainly keep an eye out to check our players dont get injured. It tinkles me off that Kane cares more about England then he does us and that Bale used us as pre season training while we paid him 7m.

The fact that Dier is in the team ahead of Dunk tells me they are still picking players on rep and profile of club they play for, bit pathetic really.
 
I've always watched England games, I saw England on TV before I saw Spurs in any game. I agree with several points people have made, it is a form of nationalism but in the right spirit thats ok, Sven did devalue England caps with his selections and multi subs and unfortunately most footballers are people you would avoid in the pub. There are far too many games and someone like Theo Walcott ends up with as many caps as the aggregate total of John Hollins, Colin Harvey, Howerd Kendall, Steve Perryman, Tony Currie, Matt Le Tissier, Stan Bowles, Ledley King and Peter Osgood all outstanding players.
 
Tournaments yes. I love the way it brings people together, even if it means tolerating the equivalent of amateur night on NYE with the people who don’t understand how things normally work! The office would usually be a fun place to be with the backdrop of a tournament, especially if the scheduling of games was during work hours. Will miss that in what I’m sure will be a different working environment in the future. As with Spurs the joy and pain of football is best shared with a crowd.

I’ve taken my son to a couple of games as it’s a diluted child friendly experience and we were lucky enough to see his hero Kane score the winner against Croatia in a game which had some meaning. I actually found it off seeing grown men trying to whip up aggressive chants in what felt like a testimonial environment!

No interest in friendlies tbh, even if it’s on I’m not really paying attention. Just check the scores to see how our players did, ideally Kane scores and no one gets injured. Maybe when every game wasn’t on TV an international friendly was a treat, but I’m bit sure they serve much purpose other than generate revenue as they have a very pre season feel to it most times.

Theo Walcott over Defoe for a World Cup squad, when he hadn’t played a prem game or been seen by Eriksen is nothing short of a scandal. Or any other player to be honest.
 
I went regularly to international at Wembley when you could either get tickets at agencies or pay on the gate, but I stopped going when the FA decided to make it awkward. Saw some great games, world cup semi final v Portugal, England beating world Champions Argentina, Beating Holland in Euros, Greaves getting 4 v N Ireland and one freezing night in November had corporate seats behind royal box to see 0 -0 against Wales in what I believe was the lowest attendance at Wembley.

Was that the tournament when he took 4 forwards? a giraffe , Walcott who was a child and two crocks in Rooney and Owen. Shocking decisions.

Charlie Austin was being bitter on the radio today. Saying players outside the top 4 never get picked and there has always been a top 4 snobbery etc. Went on to say he should've been picked more when he was playing for QPR but didn't because they were near the bottom. Trevor Sinclair then chimed in to say he got picked when he played for QPR haha. The presenters kind've shat all over him saying Watkins just got called up, So did Grealish, Mings, Coady etc. I think the only good point he made was when he mentioned Dier still getting picked!

I can't imagine making the effort to go watch England nowadays but I bet that game was amazing. Highlight from an amazing tournament. The Shearer Sheringham combo!
