A question regarding Bolts.

I understand the sizes M8 M10 and so on with the size chart here

Now knowing this and the length I need being around 6-8cms I can basically make the search easier for myself.

Therefore when I go to B&Q and screwfix sites they basically tell me the information I want except one thing.

So how do I know the diameter of the bolts that they sell. It is hidden somewhere in the M number.

B&Q give (W)M6 x (L)65mm BOLT link example

Screfix give M8 x 50mm BOLT LINK example

So the bolt end is 10mm for the spanner on the B&Q one and 13mm on the screwfix one, what is the diameter of the bolt thread though. I want to know what hole to drill and was hoping there was a way of knowing pre purchase on these items. Do they come in different thicknesses, or is everything standard, it looks to me it will be a case of going to the shop and picking one that is right, it I'd prefer doing a pre stock check before going down there.

The M number denotes the outer diameter of the thread part of the bolt... therefore an M8 thread will go through an 8mm hole. The only other variable element is how close the threads are on the bolt. A fine thread has a pitch of 1mm, a coarse thread has a pitch of 1.25mm. That impacts the size of nut you will need, best checked in store.
 
Gotcha, knowing now its rather obvious, but when you don't know how is someone ment to know. lol.. they should state that the M # is the diameter of the thread instead of assuming. Still, another day delayed in getting round to doing some dreaded DIY.

Thanks guys, hole I have is 10mm in bracket, so therefore I need M10, 10mm drill bit and 17mm spanner.

What are you threading the 10mm bolt in to? If you are using anchors (in brickwork for example) then you'll need a 12mm drill bit
 
Its for the double bed in the spare room. Basially we had one of those gas piston beds that open up and you put a lot of storage underneath.. anyway it broke. So have got some of these to go around the inside of the bed frame

The four large wholes have a diameter of 1cm, but will only be using two of them for the bolts as the bed frame will sit on the other two holes.

The structure is made of Inch thick MDF. So need to drill into that and bolt through holding the brackets.

Newphew stayed over his half term and he was fine as the storage was taken out and he slept on the mattress which was sitting on the floor, but with the other halfs parents coming over Christmas I need to sort this out. I think 6 brackets will be plenty. The frame that the gas pistons were attached too can then sit on the brackets I attach with the mattress ontop. Half the bed already has brackets to sit the frame so just need to cover the bed head area and a third of the way down the sides.
