Naughty Emirates Marketing Project - Spot of Compo??

You can't wean off though because outside the football side (which to be clear needs top punishment) they are not at a war like Russia where you can just embargo, sanction or chuck Emirati citizens out the UK because you want to cash grab your assets back.

Yes, of course. I just meant we shouldn't be worried about upsetting the country and them to some extent taking their ball home, as they are a rapidly falling power now rather than a rising one. I just meant general disentanglement from oil despots and autocrats.

All well and good based on their regime in the UAE (I disagree with rapidly failing, Abu Dhabi has money for days still). But given their network of entanglement here, it will be a brave brave person to take them on.

Ultimately this is why they thought they’d get away with it (and why they prob still think they’ll get away with it).

Hopefully the premier league don’t care about the wider political and economic issues and stand by their guns.

It's not strictly taking them on. Just removing protections allowing circumvening of the rule or law and cutting back the golden passport privileges etc. All the things George Osbourne and co did 15 years ago to bring the dirty money in

Like they supposedly did with not approving the Saudis as fit and proper owners....
True. As you say, they were never going to be refused due to the influence and money they have.

The big hope now is that they’ve broken the rules by so much (and also broken the integrity of the PL and taken so many opportunities from fans of other teams) that the PL are forced to issue a suitable punishment. For me, a suitable punishment would be worse than just relegation.

On the punishment - I think all of us have a view and most are setting themselves up for disappointment and outrage with it. These things are not straightforward, none of us are legal experts so our opinion isn't really informed by the parameters that the PL or Independent Commission are working within.

Therefore, for me, I'll wait and see what the punishment is and evaluate it based on the rationale put forward.

My knee-jerk reaction is that they should be kicked really, really heavily but that's my gut speaking and, in legal terms, my gut counts for nothing. All that said, if the punishment is not severe, the credibility of the competition is on the line in the full gaze of the world. The more you think about it, this is the judgement that no-one in authority really wanted to happen because it makes life very, very difficult for so many people on so many levels. Credit to the PL and IC for their findings.

Today's Overlap was very informative, with Ornstein and then a pure law perspective for the last half hour with another guest. Well worth a listen:

Looks like their defense is that the Dubai Government provided grants to companies who then used that money to sponsor Emirates Marketing Project, rather than the money coming directly from Mansours investment firm.

But presumably they would have offered that defence during the investigation? Unless (and sorry I haven't read the article) they are planning to make the case that the commission's rejection of this defence was wrong on a point of law?

If they cannot see how this is unsustainable then I feel sorry for them.

One word from the top and they could be sold and how the hell would they get the same income?

I understand they say they would never be sold, but that is not what we see with football clubs is it.

They did offer this defence during the investigation, and the PL rejected it. City are saying that the panel ‘didn’t understand’ but it just isn’t true. It’s not based on a misunderstanding, it’s not based on a lack of knowledge of gulf business practices, it is based on the fact that they invented this story late on in the proceedings, and falsified evidence to make it look like it came from government accounts.

The money came from ADUG, Mansoor’s vehicle. So it’s clearly his money. City will claim that in this instance the ADUG is just a front, a vehicle to move the money but it was actually the government’s, and not Mansoor’s. It is a completely dumb argument that has already been tested in the investigation and rejected.

City are going to get punished severely, I’m sure of it. What we are seeing now is not some unbelievable new piece of evidence that the panel failed to consider or understand, it’s just the PR war. City are banking on the fact that regular people won’t be able to understand complicated stories about financial routing, gulf business practices, legal entities etc, and they’re betting they won’t actually read the judgements in full. They are planting the seeds of a ‘we were mistreated and the world is against us’ narrative which will allow the owners to save some sort of face but it is a real shame for the fans of the club because as long as they keep doing this, City are going to be the most hated club in existence for decades. They will always be known as cheats, and worse still cheats that never accepted their guilt. If this was happening to Spurs, I’d be gutted that the club would be seen in this way.

Yeh that’s what makes no sense. The appeal will be against the process and the punishment not to do a re evaluation of the evidence.

Maybe not, but they will certainly use their power in the UK as leverage or threats. Look at the Etihad release, its clearly a threat
It's only a threat if people bend. If people bend and the public can obviously see it, the situation will get worse, not better.

For starters, football is our national game (aka religion) ...91 other clubs at this moment hate City, and more specifically their owners.

They (uae) might have to bend themselves, away from their usual path of success, ie money will sort it.

This is going to be so interesting.

It will be political suicide for any Politician to be seen as pro City.
