Spurs Revisonist History - Pochettino Summer of 2016

Going to do a few of these over the Summer. Thinking Summer of 95 had Klinsmann stayed and Summer of 06 had we not had that Lasagne.

Will start with the Summer of 2016. We are coming a genuine title challenge and in the last season at the Lane.

You are Director of Football at Spurs working together with Pochettino & Levy. Your budget is £60M that’s been funded by the sale of mostly youth products and Nacer Chadli.

Players Sold
Nabil Bentaleb £16M
Ryan Mason £13M
Nacer Chadli £13M
Alex Pritchard £8M
Deandre Yedlin £5M
Tom Carroll £5M

Within reason you can spend it how you wish. Hindsight can be used to an extent but you players who were not brick yet (Wimmer as an example) can’t be binned off and you cant be making data signings like were Brighton and uncovering hidden gems.

We made 4 major signings that summer if which only Victor Wanyama at £11M is viewed as a success. The transfer you can take back would be:

Transfers In
Moussa Sissoko £30M
Victor Janssen £17M
Georges Kevin N’Kodou £10M

Existing Team

Lloris
Walker Alderwireld Vertonghen Rose
Wanyama Dembele
Eriksen Dele Son
Kane

Subs
Vorm, Trippier, Wimmer, Davies, Dier, Lamela

Youth
W.Peters, C.Vickerrs, Winks, Onomah

Im taking Gundogan for the 20m City paid.....utterly underrated what he did for City

And try to do what DL couldn't and negotiate with Chelsea for Salah....beating off Roma

I’d add to that the other Moussa Dembele who went to Celtic on a free and was the other CF we were heavily linked with over Jansen that summer.

I would not ever fudging sign Sissoko, he was the harbinger of downfall.

That era was so disappointing, we just let talented players go and sign for every other team seemingly never even trying to get them. That squad stagnating as it did was inevitable with our behaviour and lack of ambition.

Sissoko turned out to be a really effective player, was one of the best safety's in the PL for a time, key part of the team that got to the CL final.

Will always be one of my favourite's.
He exceeded his limitations that season, IMO. Looked like he upgraded himself.

Never a baller or one to make a difference at the highest level, but I'll always respect him for upping his game and being a key player for us - a deserved POS too, if I remember it correctly.

And the mental strength to put up with our clam fanbase and still turn in professional performances game after game.

I have huge respect for him.

Was this the season where players were just bouncing off him? Looked like a grown man playing youth level football at times. Of course it fell apart once Sissoko approached the final third. If he had goals and assists in him, he'd have been a Yaya Toure in his box to box days clone, and he would not have been playing for us....A bit like if Dembele had had end product.

As do I.
Some of the absolute garbage punted his was from our 'fans' was abhorrent. It is not his fault he is not Sadio Mane, and I have to say, in the end he and Poch found a way to make it work. Again, I echo your last line.

Absolutely right. I also have to say, a lot of people were not as kind about Moussa when he was here as they are now.
