You don’t win titles without being solid at the back no matter how good your attack is.

So now it’s not about Akanje but rather your preference of a fullback? Which I understand, but Udogie is back and Spence can play either side. I think we are ok as we are but some healthy competition or some player with real potential may fit better than Akanje.

However if we want to play 3 at the back, Romero, VDV and Akanje would be quite some pairing

I disagree, Danso, Dragusin, Davies and possibly Takai gives us cover for both options. If we were to play 3 regularly it wouldn't be a bad buy. I'd only buy a CB if he was starter. I believe if a fullback is injured or suspended we have no suitable cover other than an aging Davies or moving an essential central defender out of position.

Not so sure about Davies as much as I like him as a person. He just doesn’t have the legs anymore and shouldn’t be in the team. Takai is an unknown entity to me, Dani’s has done very well of late, Dragusin I’m still unsure of.

But ultimately let’s see what Frank thinks he needs

Akanji has played a few games at both LB and RB. Also give the option of VdV being moved to LB if needed.
Not saying he'd be my first choice but is a decent CB to allow some rotation.

If he leaves isn't he going to want some sort assurance he will be playing every week or at least majority of games.
