Ross Barkley

So do you reckon he cancelled last minute in August so he could pocket some of the £20m of the £30m fee that was agreed back then I.e higher wages as Chelsea have now spent £20m less than they would have done in august?

I don't, I think he really was interested in his career in August, he's had more time (and agent nonsense in his ear) and he opted for money (Chelsea really doesn't care what they spend).

He's not going to get enough game time for brick at Chelsea, Conte is highly unlikely to be there next season and certainly nobody at that club is going to try to develop him as a player.

If he wanted to improve as a player and get into the England squad, Spurs was the only answer .. if he didn't feel he could displace Sissoko from our squad, I don't want him.

If you’re going to buy in Jan you want instant impact if you’re us. Barkley will take at least a month to find match fitness. I see why Poch would rather wait for a preferred target. Remember, we were thinking Jan and then he had an injury set-back!

I don't understand why a player Poch apparently wanted in August he seemingly doesn't want now. He hasn't played all season, so it can't be his form. I don't think waiting an additional month for him to get up to full speed should really be a determining factor. So what really made Poch do this u-turn.?

I think he's got as much chance of game time at Chelsea as he would have had here. Just as much chance of squeezing in front of Bakayoko, Pedro, Willian etc as he would have had getting in front of Alli, Son, Eriksen or a deeper role of Dembele etc.

Agree. Not very much chance at either.

I can appreciated he'd gone stale at Everton, but he should have gone somewhere where he'd still be the big fish in a little pond. Maybe even abroad if he was really into improving himself, like Hart tried in similar circumstances.

Did we want him in August? We put in a £40m bid for Andre Gomes, who is basically the same player but better. But did nothing with Barkley, long before he was injured too.

I don't agree with that. If you want the player then it's a long term investment. We could have signed him now and slowly integrated him into Pochs methods and by the time pre-season arrives in the summer he would have been ready to compete

Gomes is not the same player

There were enough rumours in the summer that Poch wanted Barkley, spoke to Barkley, and Levy was talking to Barkley's reps

We only made a loan offer for Gomes i thought, which was after Barkley got injued at the end of the window

If, as rumoured, Poch wanted Barkley to play as a Dembele replacement, which is exactly where Gomes plays, its difficult to believe that we'd have wanted both of them

Because we have better alternatives who’ll command half the wages?

Barkley would have been a good player for us, but after being out for half a season, he’d only be ready to play when most of he season is done. Value for money?

Wage demands, maybe?

This is just ITK, but...

Hertyid:

Just got a text about this. His wage demands would have put him ahead of Kane. Levy was prepared to pay it as wages structure will be shifting higher from the summer, but Poch didn't want to set a precedent or upset the squad dynamic. Also big concerns over injury and how much he would play this season.

First time ever Levy has opened his wallet and been shunned?

He may also have not have ever wanted to come to us!
There is so much utter nonsense written about transfers it's untrue.
When we see them wearing the shirt etc....is my mantra!

Possible but what about sissoko following that logic it seems poch wanted him .... desperation for last minute dealings i suppose

Lev probably figured he'd get the basic wage down to about 50 quid a week, plus the big bucks whenever he can get his knackered hamstrings to work.
