O/T Ronaldo vs Messi

You talk about Ronaldo as if he plays for a Bristol Rovers team managed by Glenn Roeder. He's playing for a Real Madrid team, which is the most expensively assembled squad ever I believe, with world class players in basically every squad position, managed by one of the best managers in the world. They exhibit similar levels of dominance over other teams in la liga and the CL.

And there have been quite a few times when Barcelona have played around with possession with 80 minutes, done fudge all and then Messi steps up and saves the 3 points.

I would actually argue the opposite as well. And Nesta I believe said something similar. Messi, in some ways, gives Barcelona the space to properly do their thing. Just because even when he's having a poor game, the defence always has to be thinking about him and where he is, which means that the likes of Alves, Xavi etc are given more space.

He's also been directly involved in approximately half of Barcelona's goals this season.

The second one not that much, I just like it.

The first illustrates my point about the number of players he can attract when he has the ball or is even around it as well as his passing/creativity.

Ronaldo is phenomenal, one of the best players of the last twenty years. Unfortunately for him he's playing in an era where there is someone even better in Messi. Messi, despite not having the physical attributes that Ronaldo does, is simply a better and cleverer footballer, and is certainly more team focussed. The man is simply incredible and we should all appreciate his talent while we have it, there may not be another like him for some time.

Ronaldo carried a fairly poor Manure team in his last season in the EPL (and his return was something like 36 goals)
His first seasons in Real, weren't exactly with best team/manager combo you outline there, Madrid has been struggling through a transition period for some years now. Current squad is good, but I believe still has flaws and sometimes is not the best "team". Barca on the other hand is "the best team the world has ever seen"

It's all personal opinion, I really think Ronaldo is the better individual contributor, Messi the better team player.

People compare Messi to Maradona, and if he wants to be in that comparison, he needs to guide Argentina to South American/World Cup wins, as well as take a less fashionable/extablished team (Napoli example) and make them truely successful.

Spot on, Raziel

Messi would always be preferenced against due to his club of association and of course - different style of play within a well-worked unit.
Don't let your ridiculous agenda get in the way again mate. Messi is preferenced because he's seen as the better player by a lot of people, and isn't a total bellend like 'CR9'.

Barcelona is the generally favoured media team, mate - let's be honest. Look at their coverage around the world compared to the rest - simple mechanism, really

Ronaldo is actually a very down to earth chap - read his life story and how he helped his mum out and family at the beginning. People always assume - good looking / sports cars = qunt.

Are you trying to say he's not arrogant? He is supremely arrogant, whereas Messi seems very humble - one of the many reasons why he is more popular. When asked why he always gets booed, he responded by saying "Because I'm rich, good looking and talented, perhaps people are jealous?" Comments like that do not endear him to most people. Putting aside my dislike for him, he is a truly wonderful player. Far and away the second best player in the world, but still in my view some way short of the player that Messi is.

Unfortunately you sound like a broken record anytime FC Barcelona get mentioned mate. Any team that can genuinely be considered to be one of the best of all-time has to get that sort of attention - and rightly so. Compare that to Madrid who have pretty much bought all their talent, including one Mr. Cristiano Ronaldo for ?ú80 million!

He's a fantastic player, but I can only go by what I've seen - just seems like an arrogant bastard to me. Maybe that's why he's so successful, fair enough, but Messi seems to enjoy playing football more than anyone else alive!

So his behaviour in getting Rooney sent off, his constant tantrums on the pitch and his cheating has nothing to do with his lack of popularity then?

Yeah, times have changed. Back in the 80s, International football was the peak so Maradona's achievements are rightly applauded. However, nowadays international football is not anywhere near as good as Champions League football, and Messi has dominated this like no other. His achievements should not be belittled just because he has not "single-handedly" won a world cup for his country.

The days of the 'one man team' are gone

I wish people would stop with this poor Man utd team nonsense. Every year, people say something like 'this is the worst Man utd team in x years etc etc'. Since Ronaldo has left, they've won one league title (and will win another this season), a league cup and have reached a CL final and qf. In 3 seasons. I wish we were that poor.

I'm talking about this season and last, ie 2/3 of Ronaldo's time at Real.

But every team and squad has flaws. The current Barcelona side has flaws. The AC team of the early 90s had flaws. Brazil 70 had flaws. All of the teams considered 'greatest teams' had flaws.

I don't compare Messi to Maradonna. Because I've never seen the latter play live, because Messi's career is nowhere near finished and because many of those who've seen both live seem to be of the opinion that Maradonna is better. But I don't understand this line of argument either. Surely then that argument can be used for everyone? Maradonna isn't as good as Pele because he's only won the world cup once. Pele isn't as good as Maradonna because he didn't play in Europe. Neither of them are as good as Messi because they didn't break the records he is currently destroying, one after another. Where does the comparison stop? So any player ever wanting to be compared to Maradonna or Pele need to win world cups and purposely go to a slightly lesser team and take them to a league title? Why? Football has changed and International football is no longer the pinnacle of world football.

And Arc, Barcelona are the 'favoured' media team because they've won 13 of the last 16 trophies they've been in for, they reduce world class teams to sitting in their half hoping for a chance on the counter and they have the world's best player, as well as probably the world's two best midfielders.
