The General Transfer Rumours and Speculation Thread

i want zaha. or some magic feet.

Given the season we've had and our qualification for the CL, I would hope we can get someone better than Zaha. I agree though that we need another player in those attacking positions behind Kane

I'd be happy with Zaha.

As much as I rate Harry Kane I will never understand why a number of you are satisfied with just signing a striker that is happy to sit on the bench and be a "backup" to Harry and not sign a player of greater ability who could be real competition for Harry. It means when Harry is off his game like he was today, or when he is injured, suspended or tired there will be a steep drop in quality. Ideally I would rather they also have the option to play together as well. I think both Walker and Rose raised their game even more this season when they had faced competition for their spot

Exactly!
Do you want to be the best? Then improve and be the best, otherwise this other guy will be.

Hopefully we'll play 65 odd games next session - two players in every position plus some squad/utilty players are what you need.
Mason, and maybe Carroll, will be useful utility players.

Agreed, although I think Carroll's contract expires this summer and I do not think it will be renewed, hopefully that means we will bring in a midfielder that will really compete with Demele and or Dier

We'll probably see an experienced head and Winks come in.
I wouldn't mind someone like Steven Davies, moves the ball similarly to Dembele in that he gets you up the pitch quickly.

just thinking about our investment Paul Mitchell and his 'player data army' - does it mean that we have to trade to justify their costs/existence?
if so i wonder what is their break even point, considering that we have also made heavy investments in our academy infrastructure.

I agree and I go back to my original point, even if Harry scores 30 goals a season we need someone to come on and hurt teams still and add more goals.

For me the need was exposed this season, three domestic competitions and Europa League and Kane fought on all fronts really well, but its no good to him or the team moving forward, especially in a competition like the CL coming up.

Actually one of the data team's main tasks is to show that academy players are ready and we don't need to buy.

Or how to improve our existing player - e.g. if Walker played 1 meter further left, he'd win 4.3% more interceptions etc. That's the sort of level they work on.

They work across the academy, first team squad and third party players and run all their algorithms and modelling across the lot.

Interesting stuff. Where did you read this?.... As I don't think I have seen anything that suggests this and would be keen to read up on it.

I was an old video with Mitchell from his Southampton days. Southampton have deleted it from their website

This is the closest thing to it I can find: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ed-Southamptons-head-of-recruitment-away.html

The we sold Chambers because our modelling told us that Clyne would soon be better anyway bit was the example from the video too.

If I was at Spurs my transfer policy would take a simple shape....

120m on three top top quality players.

Who would you sell to raise the £120m? Kane for £80m and Eriksen for £40m?

And how would you deal with the 5/6 others who demand salary parity with the newcomers, which consequentially tips our salary ratio up to 80% of income, therefore causing us to pause the stadium build because we can't afford anymore concrete and cranes?

Finance is already in place for the ground, the new TV deal means its money time for clubs and we have increased revenue from CL to look forward to.

Considering also our spend in last 12 months has been low I would be confident to have finances in the bank already for recruitment.

Players on books will get pay rises anyway from CL qualification, I would not be shocked to see 15% across board

Finance may be already in place, but it will have to be paid back at some time, presumably. The message being given out by the club is that we will have to be, if not frugal, at least careful with spending over the next few years.
Having said that I don't doubt that there will be a decent amount of money available in the transfer kitty for this summer if that is what Poch wants - but I can't see it being £120m.

It's a one-off pay rise, not a permanent increase like top earner matching will be

Our mortgages for the stadium will be based on binds of future financial prudence. Recently Wenger stated that Arsenal's lenders even dictated the length of his contract. We're not suddenly going to be able to spendthriftily blow £100m on players when we're trying to borrow £400m.

The games changed alot since Arsenals financing. And they still managed to spend a shed load on Sanchez....

Lets waits and see, as I said on another post even if within that it was one player of top quality thats how my policy would operate now

Your confidence is misplaced. If you look at our financial results over the past few years you'll see that we don't have the finances in the bank already for recruitment of anywhere near the level that you are suggesting. Theoretically we could borrow that sort of amount to throw at player recruitment, but that would seriously impact our ability to borrow money at a reasonable rate to pay for our stadium build.

I don't think it is beyond the realms of possibility that we'll have a net transfer budget of somewhere around £30 million this summer (increases in TV money + CL revenues) but any more than that is very unlikely.

Your policy fails from the get go because it is based on the monetary value of the player.

Indeed why spend £10-12m on Toby because you want to spend £120m, so you instead spunk £32m on Eliaquim Mangala?Emirates Marketing Project also decided to spend £50m on Sterling, because that was obvious the best use of that money. It is a myth if you think that you have to spend £120m to sign 3 quality players.

Indeed. Alli and Dier cost £9m combined and I wouldn't swap them for any other two midfielders in the world
