The all new Striker thread..

At the risk of being laughed off this forum, Zlatan is out of contract at the end of the season. He's won the league in every country he's played in. At 34 he'd still clearly do a job for us.

Get fourth place and maybe he's consider us?!

Bringing a 34 year old in ahead of Kane would be madness right now. And - IMO quite rightly - we will never pay Zlatan-sized wages for a guy to be second choice (at best "in rotation for first choice"). His pay demands would make Adebayor's look sane. We'd have a handful of wonder goals for sure, but we'd have a player who would - almost by definition - rock the boat. And right now we don't need that.

Which is why I have substantially cooled on Berahino. He was top of my wish list in the summer, and I can forgive a bit of stroppiness because he is only a kid - plus I think his chairman provoked things to an extent. Modric was back to his best by the end of September that season he threw a strop. He played his heart out that year and I didn't begrudge him his move to Madrid (though I was sad about it). He kind of earned it. Berahino doesn't seem to have that in him.

Doesn't mean I'm totally against him coming to Spurs. If Pochettino thinks he's still worth pursuing, and if the price is right - then I'll hold judgement. But there's a massive question mark over his attitude (for me).

My own preference would be someone like Ayoze Pérez at Saudi Sportswashing Machine. I think he's a good player at a struggling club. He's young, he wouldn't expect to be starting ahead of Kane, and between him Kane and Son I think we'd have some flexible options up front. Kane would still be the main man but I think Pérez would step up a level with better players around him and he'd be relatively low risk.

Zlatan is crazy, so he might accept a deal of £10pw or something just for the publicity and ego hype. Remember Beckham had that strange psg deal where his salary went to charity. I still haven't seen him play all that well very often though.

The last thing we need is signing someone with an over-inflated ego

that's the thing about Zlatan, if anything his ego is understated

he's just immeasurably awesome, and he's the only one with the capacity to estimate just how awesome he is, although, sadly for him the human brain just isn't capable of the higher level understanding required to calculate that level of awesomeness, so even Zlatan, will never truly know, just how Zlatan he is

to misquote Luke Skywalker, if there's a bright center to the universe, it's Zlatan

Pochettino can't handle him.

This is the striker thread. We simply must sign a striker in Jan as Kane cover/replacement if we want our momentum to continue. We have cover everywhere else but our squad lacks in the CF depth department and is therefore unbalanced. We have too many WFs and AMs and should sell to balance books - probably Townsend and maybe Caroll.

Must buy a CF in any event.

Player Dier as a striker

Two problems solved

Not that Poch/Mitchell/Levy need my opinion, but the only thing I'd do this winter is make a Godfather offer (25 million pounds, 80k per week salary) to Marseille for Michy Batshuayi. My girlfriend is French, and I watch a fair amount of French football, and MB is an absolute beast. Power, pace, balance, dribbling, decent finishing, and still only 22. He can play as the #9, out wide, or even a little bit withdrawn. Meaning, he could play without or without Kane. I think he'd be a brilliant signing with massive sell-on value who would hit the ground running in England. I'm not sure, even with the above offer, Marsielle would sell, but I'd give them an offer that would make it very hard to refuse.

Marsaille don't have any other strikers at all

Sure. But for 25-30 million, OM would have money to replace him. Wasn't saying that they'd accept the bid, but every French club has a price, and I'm just saying that MB would be the one I'd want us to push the boat out for.

£25-30m for a back-up CF? Or is this after United/Chelsea hit our price for Kane?

Yeah but ultimately, we want to be playing in the CL and Zlatan does not turn up in big knockout games, I'd rather we buy someone who isn't completely anonymous when it really matters.

Not at all a backup. He's one of the best striking prospects in Europe. As I said, he is flexible enough (as is Kane) to play alongside him or without him. Plus, his presence would add true competition for places, while offering cover for Kane if/when he breaks down. For me, you can play MB and Kane in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 in any of those frontlines, as well as in a 4-4-2, which we could play in an emergency as well.

I think sometimes we look at football much too rigidly. MB and HK aren't just strikers. They are forwards. It's a bit like Liverpool signing Sturridge when they already had Suarez. People said that it was a lot of money to spend on a backup striker, and you can see how well that worked out b/c Sturridge, Suarez, and Rodgers were able to be flexible enough to make room for a brilliant player. I think if you are looking for someone who is content as "just a backup striker," it will likely be a lateral move that won't strengthen our XI. I'd much rather sign someone who is multi-talented and can play alongside Kane as well as without him.

I thought we needed an old fashioned goal scorer, a la Jermaine Defoe that's why my preference is berahino. Not sure about the obsession with wide forwards as we are well stocked. If you take Liverpool it's not only that they have more strikers than us but also they have more striking options. It's these different options up front which may give them the edge in the chase for top 4.

With just over three weeks until the transfer window opens, Metro reports that Tottenham are limbering up by sending their scouts to Marseille to watch Michy Batshuayi in action. The 22-year-old marksman has scored 12 times for the Ligue 1 outfit this season, form that he's replicated on the international stage for Belgium. According to Metro, Spurs gaffer Mauricio Pochettino had his spies watch Batshuayi against Rennes last week and, aware of Arsenal's interest, he is "keen" to make a move for the Belgian striker next month.

I haven't seen a ton of Berahino, but it seems like he's like MB in that he could play up front by himself or with Kane. Last year, Berahino lead the line sometimes (like in that Chelsea game) but also played with Ideye and Anichebe. That's the kind of player I'd be interested in, rather one who is just gonna start in the EL and get 10 minutes here and there in the league.

What a co-incidence that the Metro reports our "interest", a day or two after one or two posters on here discuss the fact that they'd like us to sign him...:D
