Politics, politics, politics

I just hope that this isn't all gonna end up being used as a pretext for another military adventure. Libya has gone to sh1t, Iraq went to sh1t, Afghanistan was a waste of time, money and human life (The Taliban just wait for us to go, then take things over again). "I know what we can do..."

I hope that the first thought our government has is to not contribute to making things worse (by dropping bombs -- and when that fails, sending in troops).

As for refugees, isn't there a mechanism through the UN that could divvy up a fair number between the developed nations of the world, not just the ones in the EU?

Let Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran etc. sort out their own brick regarding military action. And stop selling weapons to anyone and everyone!

Well in the case of enquiry and who owes what the Romans killed Jesus if religion is meant to be believed so they owe the world more, then come the Germanys for world war and then comes Israel for Palestine.....can't keep hitting Britain for ever because of the British Empire

What makes me laugh about Turkey is they are going through a boom financially and offer a religious crossroads that would benefit Syria (East v West), let people put pressure on these states that are 500-1000 miles away and within the religions context than 2000 miles to be washed up on the shores.

Saudi Arabia is the head of the Islamic world and also one of the richest states in the world, why not set up some kind of refuge settlement there, invest the money there rather than Kensington Casinos and also show compassion based on the fact that IS is killing in the name of Islam????

Is it about what we owe, or common decency? Because someone else isn't doing something, we shouldn't either? If ISIS (or whatever the bunch of clams are supposed to be called now) were coming my way, I'd leg it too and hope someone in a less mental part of the world took pity on me and helped.

Europe needs to work together (what it's for) to work out a fair distribution of these people who need our help, like the Italian ambassador said on Newsnight yesterday, have them apply for European asylum rather than of individual states, and deal with them from a central position. Asylum doesn't necessarily equal permanent residence either, these places might one day achieve some semblance of normality (arf arf) so they can go back, they may even want to, but dead 3 year olds washing up on European beaches isn't really acceptable.

Looks like Farage was right about North Africa and the mass immigration.

Maybe its time to say enough is enough and the UN takes over Syria or Egypt backed by Europe's armies and builds a new country akin to Israel for all these people to live peacefully.

Maybe we shouldn't have France involved as they cannot defend a wire fence.. they are useless twunts.

This is kinda what Jordan is becoming, with hundreds of thousands of Syrian, Iraqi and Palestinian refugees going there. I'm guessing that Jordan is gonna need a lot of money, so hopefully the Saudis will cough up.

The media keep using these words migrants and refugee as if they're the same thing. People from war zones are refugees and have a right to be protected from harm until the war zone goes normal. Like in England taking refuge in countryside villages...they went back after the bombing stopped. Syrians must have a refuge away from ISIS which is nearer than Europe. Migrants are people looking to emigrate to a new area for work, school, social reasons with no intention to return if it works out. Refugees however, should be returned after the conflict, but.....duh! Not really going to happen is it.

As for we should things if other don't, the point I am making is that other should be put under more pressure to do more and shamed into help more than we are being!! Its like we are more at fault because others won't help.

I have spent weeks in Syria so my heart bleeds for them, I spent 5 days in Palmyra and have seen it blown up in less than that.

The point is why is it that the EU/UK is shamed into feeling guilt whilst their own continent turns its back on them? I am more for shaming a country like the UAE that could help, swifter and more affectively than us but are more worried about their Travel and Tourism industry than have 10,000 refugees run around.

Because the people in charge are scumbags and entirely shameless? Look at the other brick that goes on in some of those states. How do you shame a country like that? I'm pretty sure it's widely reported that ISIS's funding comes from Saudi/Qatar, so they're not exactly going to be bastions of human decency.

I'm sure there are decent people in all these places btw, but they have no power.

Easy to shame them...rather than put extra pressure on a country that's smaller than Canada but more populated put pressure on countries that spend billions on A380s and World Cup bribes...

Its hard to turn your back on the photos I see, and that's not what I am doing, but people are totally barking at the wrong people for this...

Turkey have taken 1.8 million refugees.

The problems in Syria are caused by Assad and his brutal regime set up by the French and propped up and supported by Western governments for many years.

Libya was stable but went to pot after military intervention by Western forces.

Don't get me wrong these countries arent in this position purely because of the west but you have to respect that these people don't ever want to live under a despot again. they want freedom. As we opened our arms to jews in WW2 maybe we could do the same now and help these human beings.

syria has already gone to brick

it doesn't matter what other people do, we should do all we can

I know its not a popular view, and maybe i'm responding to the graphic sensationalism of recent news but I do think we should intervene, we're either against tyranny or we're not, if we have to deliver democracy and religious freedom with weapons then so be it

I don't mind refugees in the official sense, trouble is a good proportion of them are looking for a lot more. And those same complainers are wanting to invite poor people into a society where for the last 3 months they've been saying the Tory Welfare Bill is killing poor & disabled people...why put the poor bastards through it if it's that bad? You can't say Britain under the Tories is an abuse of privilege, then invite a load of innocent people to come prove it for you!

Saudi Arabia could ease the strain on Jordan though, by taking a few hundred thousand of their Syrian refugees.
Could, but apparently won't. You can try and shame them into it, as Grays suggests, but they've not been shamed thus far, so if that doesn't work then what do you do?

Its about time the yanks stepped in to help, most of the problems in that part of the world are down to their foreign policys. Where the hell is warmonger Bush now for Christ sake.

Again though, it'll take years to sort out the complete mess over there. These people are in immediate need of help.

If the UAE and Qatar wasn't too busy ripping off the Sub Continent worker, they might help?

Failing that Sweden, Copenhagen and Norway have a booming economy....
