Poch = a big fat 0!

Seriously whatever goodwill Poch got from our last two games, he just threw out the Window, based on today, he has no ****ing idea what he is doing. Starting Lamela instead of Lennon? plays out exactly how every one in England but Poch know, slow, narrow game with our right side vulnerable, half time switch? Chadli ?? then Paulinho .. really .. ****ing Paulinho? then when finally Lennon comes on, he takes off Soldado instead of Kane (who was having his worst game of the season.

Lloris = MOTM, really we just need to appreciate him while he's here.
Eriksen, actually thought he had a decent game, more so in first half, but Poch's ****ty narrow formation kills his space to work in.

Dier = not a RB
Kane = knackered, easily worst game of season, should have been subbed.

So angry and very worried that Poch will sell all the wrong players in January and buy ****

I think injuries and fatigue dictated most of the decisions today. 3 big games in 6 days just killed us.

Dier played RB because Walker, Naughton and Chiriches were all injured. And Kane stayed on because Ade's jacked it in and we've no other senior forward at the club.

Re Lamela vs Lennon - a decade of watching Lennon tells us that he's not effective against teams that defend deep. He's good when we are playing on the break, but not the subtle stuff around the box. Lamela just has more guile. That I assume was the logic.

Lloris 8 Our man of the match. four great saves.
Dier 6 struggled in first half, better in second.
Fazio 7 Didn't do much wrong.
Vertonghen 7 A consistent performance.
Davies 7 solid, doesn't offer much going forward though
Mason 6 Drifts out of games. stamina issues?
Bentaleb 5 Got over run in second half.
Eriksson 6 A couple of nice touches, but couldn't find space.
Lamela 4 I don't think he will make it. Needs more time and space than the PL allows him. Constantly over complicating things when on the ball.
Soldado 6 Had three great chances. surely one has to go in by fluke?
Kane 6 Tried hard, looked tired.

Chadli 6 Looked rusty.
Pailinho 5 No impact, as usual.

Mate, I'm so trying to give Poch the benefit of the doubt, but his selection were all worng

- Lennon should have played instead of Lamela
- Lennon should have come on at half time instead of Chadli
- Not even going to comment about ****ing Paulinho
- Kane should have come off instead of Bobby

Awful .. ****ing crowd having to tell manager the sub to use ...

We could have done with some rotation today. Where we had zip and energy against Chelsea, today we struggled in the face of palace keeping tight to us. The midfield engine of Mason and Bentaleb, so impressive in our last two games, didn't have the same energy - and that is not surprising as they've played 3 games in 6 days is it? Definitely could have played Dembele today.

But the biggest problem for me are our strikers. Kane was also leggy. Didn't have the same drive. And Soldado missed about 3 half half chances. Soldado contributed to some build up play but on the whole looked lazy and his head is gone. Whenever he's 1-1 with the keeper, he loses it. Just needs to get rid of the emotion and focus on putting the ball into the corner of the net.

Second half we should have won the game from 60 mins. Palace tired and space opened up. But a number of things beyond fatigue stopped us from turning the screw and scoring. 1. Lamela should have stayed on at least until 60 mins. He wasn't hugely effective first half, but he has guile that Chadli lacks and at least he looked fresher and able to pose questions to Palace. Some things he tried didn't come off but some did. 2. The anxiety in the stadium and pressure on the young team really stopped us from just playing OUR game. It all became so desperate. Rather than keep calm, pick the passes, move well and finish, we were trying to force shots which weren't on, or run the ball when a pass was better. We lost our composure and game plan. That let Palace back in. 3. Our fullbacks were not good enough in attack. Dier had a bad game. Always standing off his man, even before the ball reached the Palace player! Then he got beaten almost every time. But we needed the full backs to provide width in attack. Davies did nothing wrong. Was ok. But Rose might have provided Palace with more to worry about. 4. As mentioned above we needed to rotate Mason today. Say Dembele might have provided some freshness and strength.

Eriksen, Lloris, Vertonghen, Fazio, Bentaleb were okay. But ultimately, and many may slate me, having Adebayor available either as a sub or starting, could have won us the game.

Lennon's no good against deep-sitting organised defences. We also don't know how fit he was after months out and then 2 intense games in 4 days.

Paulinho came on because Mason was spent, and he's a bit more high tempo than Stambouli

I assume Kane stayed on over Soldado because Palace were on top and we wanted someone who could hold the ball up.

The crowd just caused the players to get tetchy and probably made Poch delay the last sub - another 12th man for the opposite job

I know why we didn't, but I'd've been tempted to rotate against Chelsea (bring in Dembele, Ceballos, Winks, Oduwa, Miller etc), and made sure we got the 3 points out of the two fixtures instead of 1.

Our assistant manager's facial expression is hilarious and that kept me entertained for a bit, so can he be added to the poll for man of the match? It seems embarrassing putting Loris as Mom when realistically he made a few good saves which we'd expect him to, it says more about the rest of them rather than a masterclass in keeping..

It's obvious now. We needed to use our big squad. Poch also needed to give the team a game plan to stick to, and shut out the crowds hysteria. Dembele for Mason. Ade for Kane. Maybe Rose for Davies. But the latter two are not fully fit apparently. Ultimately, not having a fresh striker was the biggest problem for us. At least Soldado was getting into positions to score. Eriksen should have taken Kane's place and play Lennon. So, in retrospect, the team should have looked like this:

Lloris

Dier Fazio Verts Rose
Lennon Bentaleb Dembele Lamela
Eriksen
Soldado

To be fair I've criticised Poch for not knowing and sticking to his team in the past. But today, Poch needed to put faith and prepare some fresh men, to take the fight to Palace.

Two of his saves were very good ..

Can someone explain the theory of why we were so much more knackered than Palace?

I'm sure the vast majority of their starting 11 have played more games than our first 11 today.

1. They were knackered too after 60. Space opened up. But we were not disciplined and we became desperate as the crowd hysteria intensified.
2. The younger players have given it their all in the last two games. They are no doubt playing on Adrenalin. Kane and Mason gave everything. Saw a stat that Kane ran 14k in one of those games.
3. We played in Europe prior. chelsea and **** lost today, so it's not just us that have not performed after a run of intense games on a cold winter day.

I'm sure the vast majority of their starting 11 have played more games than our first 11 today.

We played Sun, Wed, Sat vs their Sat, Tues, Sat. We all know from Europa how hard losing that extra day rest makes it.

We also played Everton and Chelsea (two very intense matches), whereas they had Villa and Swansea.

Lennon's no good against deep-sitting organised defences.

Him just being there indirectly effects the game though, he opens the game up for those around him, Lamela only compounds the lack of space. I really thought Lennon was the catalyst for our high tempo pressing against Everton as well, he may have lost a yard over the years but he's still one of the quickest players around, he's so quick and sharp to pressure a player and the others seemed to follow suit. With Dier at right back I thought it was a bat**** crazy decision to play Lamela instead of Lennon, especially when we have Davies and Eriksen on the opposite flank.

442 wonky :barnet:

Without looking at the maths of it. From a glance we've definitely played far more minutes

He made 1 change for Chelsea and got absolutely slated on here by some, imagine if he'd made wholesale changes, they'd be calling for his head! He was damned of he did and damned if he didn't.

Do people just argue and ignore the point?

It's not the subs/changes, it's the effect on pace/formation

Everton showed the formation/pace that worked

- Soldado out for an extra midfielder against Cheat$ki can make sense
- Lamela for Lennon doesn't maker sense when we have struggled all season with being too narrow
