OMT - TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs Man U

As I said I only saw the second half but it seems that most errors were self inflicted. Some were trying to overplay in a defensive area others were just plain loose passing. Its hard to criticise an underperforming team in trying to attack with a flick or a trick so I'd leave a lot in that area slide but sometimes it seemed hit and hope and just gave possession back immediately.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chadli being on was for some physical presence against Smalling. Lennon played well in the first half and I think we clearly targeted Evra as our avenue to break through, meaning the left side needed to be kept solid and locked down. So we keep Chadli on when Lennon comes on because we want Evra to be facing a constant stream of pace with fresh wingers who are able to go full pelt. It almost worked, Andros was a toe away from scoring and Defoe exploited space down their left side before getting pulled back by Vidic in a great position.

In terms of a plan for the match, ensuring Evra is up against 2 fresh wingers playing at full intensity is a sound proposition. And considering Lennon busted a gut for most of the first half and didn't do much at the start of the second, it again wasn't a terrible idea.

Agreed, I can believe that was what AVB was thinking. With Jones Vidic Evans Smalling they had quite a powerful heading quartet, plus Evra has a good spring, plus Rooney is decent in the air, so I think he wanted someone that can do a job at corners (Chadli is huge).

Bit of a shame though, I would like to see us go for the jugular at home, rather than worry about their set pieces, but I can understand why he did it.

Seems to me that we have some intricate passing tidy possession players in Sigg, Chadli, Eriksen, Lamela and some more direct sprinting lose-the-ball but try to make it happen players in Lennon and Townsend.

And to add to the above point, if Lamela isn't injured it's probably the reason why he wasn't in the squad at all. He isn't going to do Evra for pace and he isn't going to keep the left side solid, nor the centre of the pitch where Paulinho played well. This wasn't the game for him, and I'm sure if he was left out he understood why.

Totally agree with this. Lamela will be far more useful trying to unlock teams sitting back for now. Still has a lot of developing to do.

I am sure he didnt understand as this is world cup year and more importantly he is our record signing, if he is not in the squad at all you have to wonder why we shelled out 30mill on a player who cant even do that???? It looks like Lamela is a Baldini signing and not a AVB one if I was a bitter/cynical fan.

If he would rather have played and got shown up because he can't carry out the plan for the team then it would have been worse for him and his world cup prospects. He will get games this year, and he will get them when he is ready and able to do what is asked of him. I have no doubt about that.

I dont think some of you were watching Chadli. Only 2 players completed more passes than the guy Walker and Vertonghen. He had 25 to Lennon's 8.
Lennon started well but couldnt get into the game at times.
Lennon's last pass attempt came before the 35th minute. That's 30 minutes he was on the pitch without trying to pass the ball before AVB took him off.

But that's the thing we, Tottenham, not Chelski/Mancity have bought a 30mill player. We havent the luxury to afford to just say "we dont need you today". Of course he needs bedding in but christ he needs to be given some games to give him the chance. I cant remember many top clubs doing this to a star signing and ending up with success.

Of course we have that luxury. If the plan is to get at their ageing left back with pace and intensity while ensuring we have a physical presence on the opposite flank, we can absolutely tell our 30M player who can barely speak English and who hasn't shown he has settled yet that he isn't needed for a game. It would be very small time to shoe-horn a player into a team simply because he cost a lot of money.

Maybe he could have gotten more time against Tromso, but it appears it was the plan for Chadli to play today and the manager probably wanted him to get some game time in preparation. Sigurdsson could have been dropped against Tromso for Lamela but since Lamela hasn't really settled yet, I think there's no point playing him when he won't be effective, and giving our detractors another reason to slate him.

He will get games in a couple of months onwards, and he will play well. I can near enough guarantee it. Right now though, I think the logic in our selection today was sound.

Should have won, gifted them both goals. The performance was good, much improved, likely down to not playing a team with 11 men behind the ball at all times.

We have a decent December coming up, plenty of home games and I think we should be taking a lot of points, but who knows. I really hope Lamela was left out today with a view of him playing a big part of Wednesdays game but again who knows.

Well it was a point gained, but thats about it. Apart from 2 great strikes (one simply brilliant and one down to poor defending on the free kick) did we learn a single positive thing in terms of AVB's "supposed" vision or style of play to give us renewed hope for the rest of the season. Not for me im afraid.

Yet more baffling team selections, and even worse subs, realy does make you wonder what the hell is going on. How do you take of Lennon and leave the awful Chadli on the pitch ? How do you then take of Soldado who has crippling low confidence and leave the awful Chadli on the pitch. Could he not have played 2 up front just for that last bit of the game ? Who knows what might have happened ? Another 90 minutes and are we anywhere nearer where we want to be.

Nope. Its saved his job for another week but thats it.

Totally agree with shaney, after 50 prem games in charge I am now firmly in the "does he know what he is doing" camp. Its not like we look like we are going to spank anyone. True we played with more urgency today but we are having the same old problems on the pitch

Re the Lennon sub - if you're bringing on Townsend to play RW that means Lennon will go left - where he is ineffective

A good performance generally I thought although I felt we were alot more menacing in the first half. Paulinho looked a bit better today as did Dembele but I am still left wondering that it could just be because we are at home and it is a big game. I will believe we have turned the corner a bit more if we get 3-4 wins during December.

I have no idea what on earth Walker was doing for the first goal. It is just against every thing you learn at the most basic of levels as a defender. At no time really should you try and take a touch or cushion it back to your keeper when you are under pressure and the ball has been played into your 6 yard box. I think at times like that it comes down to a sense of thinking you are actually better than you are. Just do your job well first, which is defending and worry about taking a nice touch under pressure when you can master the basics.

Very disappointed with the performances of Dawson and Chadli who were out worst players in my opinion.

I think he would have been more effective today and given us better defensive balance than leaving Chadli on. He ball watched all day and for a guy as big as he is, he does not like physicals one little bit or going up for a header.

He didn't really stand out as having a bad game to me, wasn't great but thought he done ok

Good to see Lennon play so well though and i thought Paulhino looked good too
