Mateus Fernandes Official

Nine times out of 10, Fernandes would have "won" a free-kick from diving like that, but the ref clearly took into account that Fernandes was trapped in the corner and looking to win a foul. I am happy for refs to make this judgement call. Players often tumble to signal to the ref that contact has been made but the ref is not obliged to give a foul, especially if the contact was not actually forceful enough to upend the player.
100%. It wasn’t a foul and it’s good to see refs not giving them. It’s risky behaviour from Fernandes to do it there.

There was one with their number 2 second half where Kudus dispossessed him and he went down squealing like a pig. Never a foul and ref ignored the theatrics correctly. The lad was up and about it no time.

Great to see refs being a bit firmer with that carry on.

You’re not wrong. I thought he was outstanding but there were a few very loose passes that put us in trouble while him hitting the deck first half in our corner flag could have cost us. He showed he can be massive for us but it wasn’t a perfect performance by any means.
Pretty much how he assessed his own performance.

We saw this same thing happen with Caicedo in the game. A player gets the ball and has it shielded. The opposition player doesn't make any attempt to play the ball and bundles a player over. So we're back to the laws again, and it was a foul. As it would have been if Palmer had held his ground and Mateus had backed into him.

What we really need is players to be able to shield the ball with the other player not being able to go through them in this away. Palmer should have just held Mateus in the corner and waited for our player to show him the ball. Alterntively the second player comes along and comes in from the other side. The pressure should be on Mateus to find a way out of a cul-de-sac or concede the throw-in.

The sadness here is that we're looking at the symptom (Mateus playing for foul) versus looking at the root cause (ref not applying the laws).

It's the officials refereeing behaviours that are changing the game. Nobody has ever given them license to ignore the laws. They just do.

Can’t agree mate. It’s not a non contact sport. Fernandes tried to draw contact, felt the touch and went down when he didn’t have to. A free kick often gets given in that situation but it shouldn’t be. The inconsistency is frustrating but it’s never a foul for me. Given the inconsistency in decision making, it’s a terrible decision from Fernandes to go to ground and he got what he deserved.

Thought he was magnificent and showed what he will bring to this team. 85m will be a bargain but he needs a bit of work on decsion making which is to be expected at his age.

Not really a downer just being honest. Maybe my post wasn't that clear because EU thought he had a great game, just that a lot of the time he played short passes poorly. If you didn't notice fair enough but it was definetly there. Despite that he had a great game. If he gets his pass pacing right he will be bloody fantastic and probably world class and I'm not someone to get too excited about a player but I see his potential.
He even mentioned in the interview after the game that he was disappointed in the number of times he lost the ball and that is an area he needs to improve in.

It was a top performance, but not perfect and as you would expect of someone his age things still to improve on. But he's a top talent no doubt...

Tbf that is called for a foul 99 times out of 100. There was a push/contact in his back which, right or wrong, is a foul by the laws of the game since there was no attempt to play the ball (the big difference in Kudus tackle on their LB in the second half).

His tackle on Neto to gain possession right before that was excellent.

In his defence on those short passes, the pitch was really holding the ball up with all the rain.

That pass he faded out to Tel was glorious. Looks even better from behind.

The way the players keep setting the ball back to him for a long pass must be off the training ground. The same thing happened half a dozen times.

He is so good, but I can't really remember him performing so well for the Spammers. Obviously he did, and that is why we paid all that money. The lesson I'll take from this is that I must have watched exactly the right number of West Ham matches. fudge all.

He always wants the ball
The only player we have had like that playing as a real CM was moussa and before that Modric
Huge confidence in his own abilities

We may even be saying the same thing. My point is that players would not even go to ground in this way if they could trust the referee to apply the laws of the game when they're being fouled from behind. Players with the ball are not allowed to decelerate and even stop with the ball and shield it. The foul from behind is never given whichever part of the body is fouling the player with the ball. It's normally a hand in the back or a shove and almost all of the time the biggest giveaway is the player without the ball is not even trying to get the ball. It's not really about the game being a contact sport this one. That is more for when 2 players are fighting for possession of the ball. Fernandes had possession of the ball.

I do agree though that Mateus was naive and stupid to make it that obvious.

It's funny how some are trying to give me pelters for something that was obvious to see and the player himself even mentioned. 🤣

Really good performance and got better the more game went on, looks like we have a great partnership that should only get better.

Hopefully he can stay fit and get a good run of games in his proper position now, quite a few people tipped him to be player of the year - Ornstein had him down as a contender.

Personally I thought it was a 100% clear foul on Fernandes, and he barely exaggerated going to ground, if at all. You can see the scum player accelerate shoulder first into this back, with enough force to knock him well off balance:

What I loved about Fernandes also was that after the game in his interview, he talked about how HE hadn’t been good enough for the manager. That is a proper example. Humility and taking accountability. Especially when there are other examples like Fernandes at United being a horrific counter weight.

I think we as fans can sometimes worry too much about a strong and good manager doing what needs to be done to reinforce expectations, be it standards or the tactical plan. There has been a lot of ‘why isn’t Fernandes starting’ but it’s clear that in this system, the positions you take up and the choices you make with the ball all have to connect, and if one piece doesn’t function the whole thing can break down. But clearly we spent massive money on this guy and paid the wages to win him in the market…he’s gonna be fine and isn’t going to mind a bit of coaching that gets him performing better for the team. And he’s clearly humble to embrace it.

Same thing with Tel getting some coaching on the pitch. I think these players are professional and respect the coach. And we should trust the coach more. He has a specific idea of what he wants and it clearly takes longer to sink in. But it’s getting there, and these players don’t need to be mollycoddled. They are going to be ok, and we as a club should be confident in ourselves that we can set expectations on these players without worrying that something bad is gonna happen.

He gives me Wilson Palacios vibes personality wise.
