**** OMT Tottenham Hotspur Vs Coventry City ****

** side note, while I called out Van Hecke he was so brave putting his head in the way of that rocket shot from their Japanese player, so credit where it is due **

I’m not sure Sakamoto should have been allowed to start for them to be honest; looked like he was playing in forbidden colours.

Judging from yesterday's performance, clean sheets will be few and far between this season. Even when we slow the pace down, our centre backs have too much passing responsability which means we'll always be vulnerable when they lose the ball in a dangerous position. Hopefully, we can continue to score on a regular basis. It wasn't so bad, but it wasn't as impressive as last week's performance. Somewhere down the line, we'll be good at switching gears but after scoring, the tempo of the game dropped and it seemed like we couldn't get out of that until they scored. Then we showed some urgency again and our overall quality saw us through.

Solanke played better. Gray was useful again, but I thought we missed Bergvall's movement in midfield. Having said that, Coventry's midfield was better than what ManUtd put up last week, so maybe there's that too.

Things are taking shape. It was great to see Madison scoring and everyone looked happy to have Kulusevski back. Chelsea will be a different test - one I don't really expect this team to pass at this point in its development, but at least we're on an upward trajectory now... when was the last time we've been able to say that?

I thought Tosin did well, he won a lot of his aerial challenges and he looked more assured on the ball. Madders was arguably the difference but his movement can still improve. When we had good posession in the final third, we became static and we struggle to unlock defences. We need to switch the ball quicker, a few did last night but our wide players alwaays had room. Madders needs to play that Kane role and drop deep to get things started more often. He, like Xavi can unlock those tighter situations. Marmoush and Solanke will both be increasingly danagerous is they can make the runs. There were a few last night and occasionally the passes were just too delayed. Players need to look up and hit those passes, the strikers when it gets condensed need to find that yard and run off the shoulder. More goals to come. Another improvement. Just great to see Maddison and Kulu back at it. Fingers crossed for them both.

Lovely feeling to win at home, eh?:)

I must say i was kind of surprised Marmoosh wasn't taken off. Absolutely hid behind defenders in that first half. Hopefully that goal gives him a boost but despite it, i thought he was poor.

VDV frustrated me a lot in that he dawdled a lot when Robertson was giving him a passing option out wide and he'd have had a nice opportunity to get a cross in. He's the only decent crosser we have at left-back, imo. It was like VDV really doesn't trust his passing ability...
Loved Tosin's game as well.

Good to get a win and confirm the mantra that if you don't shoot you won't score.

Onwards to helsea, hopefully we can get some of the wounded back.

thats a lot of goals off an xG of 0.9

slowed the xGA in the second half slightly

we still have a lot of problems defensively, they were successful on half of their verticals and won 25% of crosses, thats appalling from our point of view

Wish that all PL keepers were this generous and allowed our shots to slip through their fingers!

Rushworth could stop basic shots, we would be talking about another frustrating draw in which the forwards created nothing and a lack of movement and a defence giving up easy chances.
I agree mate. On the other hand lots of goals have a bit of luck attached to them. See Madueke's goal against Forest which took a massive deflection on the way in. The crucial difference between yesterday and the Man Utd game imho was that we got more shots on target. When you do that there is always a chance of a lucky bounce or a keeper fumble. We need to keep doing that.

We really missed Savio, his final cross / shot may not be perfect but he creates space/issues no one else fit in the squad can

We desperately need a striker in Jan

Saying all that, it was a much needed win.

Over the years I have seen far too many games where opposition keepers suddenly decide to enter some sort of higher version of themselves where they channel Gordon Banks' spirit, to even begin making a peep when one of them finally has a bad game against us.

If you don't shoot you can't score and we are very guilty of not shooting.

Now that we play a high possession game, I'd seriously consider playing Tel upfront instead of Solanke. The way we are playing we don't create chances with crosses, we played probing balls to feet which requires movement and first touch...

Actually scrap that, Tel's first touch under pressure is poor (his first touch when he's got time is actually superb), so don't think that's a good idea at all...

I think we probably just stick with Solanke for now and buy a half decent Striker in January...
I personally think that’s worth trying. His “shift and shoot” technique is very good (just usually he’s 25 yards out when doing it)

A job done performance, a win was what matters and we got that.

Some thoughts

- Good to see RDZ mixing up the tactics a little, an acknowledgement that while we have been largely playing well, we are quite predictable.
- Coventry is probably a harder game than most people will give credit for, compact, physical, good on counter, kept going. One of those you must match them on effort. A lot of previous generation Spurs teams would have lost that match.
- 3 goals from outside the box, what sorcery is this? Frank would have them all on zone 14 punishment

Re the players
- Robertson was poor, held up the game so many time when the ball went to him
- Solanke was more involved, better running/pressing but still awful in terms of threat.
- Tosin helped with the aerial threat
- Massive to have Maddison start and Deki play (500+ days for that for both of them)
- Kudus looking sharper, he, Maddison and Tonali were our best players.

Hopefully everyone back for Saturday, on to the next one.

Agree except didn't think Robertson was that poor, his experience shone through on occasions.

Agreed with most of what you've written here.

However, i'd disagree somewhat re Robertson. I thought VDV often held onto the ball too uch when Robertson was in space. The one time Robertson got in space he put in a cross that we'd only dream of being done with our other LB/LWB options (the one where Solanke scored but it was chalked offside).
I felt VDV was either unsure of his own passing ability at times
