Djed Spence

Have a feeling if asked to play there consistently he wouldn't be as good. Also worth considering it was the element of surprise, Dortmund weren't prepared for it and would be a different ball game if teams start planning for him being there....
You could be right and unfamiliarity played a part in the performance. I'd argue though that his attacking strengths are what they are, and dribbling and beating a man is one of them.

Didn't see the game but felt Spence may have just enhanced his squad value to his manager last night. I can imagine games in the future where he is no longer the backup LB but still rotating with Porro and being on the same pitch as Porro and Udogie. He's hitting the mid-twenties now so hopefully can really kick on.

I'd still like to see him show some consistency of application in every game, but really happy for him that he put in a performance last night.

He was good, cooked their FB, went both sides, to the line and cut back, linked well with the players around him, even popped up on Porro's side.

Being inverted higher up obviously can be more effective than being inverted as LB

Talent is there, but I agree re the application, and I think there is reason with so limited options for the manager at FB for most of season, he hasn't seen more game time (something we are not seeing on training pitch?)

Was it perhaps the case that when he's a full-back it's about passing and ball retention? When he's got a full-back behind him it is on him to come up with the tricks. So the manager perhaps told him to forget his passing and retention stats and just go for it more. After all, we sort of know how Frank thinks and losing possession in the left corner of the pitch is perceived ver differently than through the middle. You are more likely to recover and protect your goals against column.

I think he isn't preferred as LB (even to Davies) because he limits our passing out the back (already brick with Vic) as his natural pass would be inside not down the line, the real question is how/why does Frank prefer to run Porro into the ground (until his performances suffer) vs. giving Spence some RB time. Frank has utilized him when we are more concerned about countering the winger on the opposition (although even that usage seems to have faded)

I'm struggling to visualize Frank saying go for it more :D

Either way, he's hitting that age where it has to be more consistent

I think he has all the talent in the world and if played regularly in a position and system that suits his strengths, he has a very high ceiling. Seems situationally intelligent and has a surprising burst of pace to pull away from defenders which we haven't seen till recently.

The interesting thing is that I've noticed a bunch of fans talking about his pace going forwards, including myself.

I'm not sure I've seen him sprint backwards and thought to myself "that was lightning".

Maybe because he doesn't appear to be that fast to the naked eye without a defender trailing in his wake?

I did like the 2 wingers could cut in if they wanted and left space for the fullback to get forward.

Porro definitely had more space to move into, but I'm hoping (if we keep this system going) Udogie will get forward more with more match fitness
