The Official 2023/24 Premier League Thread

I know and don't disagree, but they have been warned, so why do it?
Because they are stupid. But really haven't the football authorities got better things to crack down on. It's not the same as crowding round the ref. Wonder if they'll start carding swearing.

Probably the same reason people end up putting a load of £ into a swear jar? It's a force of habit, especially in a high pressure intense environment it's not going to disappear overnight. But perhaps in the long term players might cut it out....

Don't see it in Rubgy, high pressure intense environment game with far more physical contact.

Yeh and although I'm not always a fan of comparisons you are spot on. Refs are there to enforce the rules and are generally now poor at it. It's not hard to stamp put dissent, you just have to wanna do it. Problem is refs are scared of the Peps and Klopps of th4 world as they were the Jose and Fergies. Refs are worse now with the VAR buffer of actually making decisions and it's now more about being mates and smiley with players than being the enforcer of rules

Not helped by the bosses of the refs who see it as PR now than their job

I would like to see the TV experts and pundits say it was disgraceful behaviour every time we see it along with crowding the ref, and ask the managers after the game why their players are behaving so badly. It would be hard but only by shaming or ridiculing them will you get through, fines don't work.

Absolutely. But it was never in rugby. Just like diving it is engrained into football players, and you're not going to immediately stamp it out just because you get booked for doing it - to football players it is a force of habit. But you can see the cards tallying up for this and other types of dissent to the ref, so over time you would imagine players do begin to remember not to wave imaginary cards in the air etc but will take a bit of time....

I think football always needed a refs decision is final rule and stand by them, mistakes and all. As soon as they bowed down to managers being on tele slagging refs you knew we were in trouble. We took respect levels for refs and chuck them in the bin. Then we took the last bit of their respect and handed over to TV refs....

Mistakes happen in all facets of the game, refs were also spacegoats for managers, they were not always wrong

Simple solution would be to adopt what happens in rugby, ref talks to the player involved in an incident and the captain, book anyone else getting involved along with the wavers. It would take time to sink in and rely on refs being consistent, probably as big a problem.

There is so much football could learn from rugby in terms of the whole refereeing process. Agree totally....

I like the bookings for the card gesture personally... it's always been a childish gesture and if they can stamp it out then good.

Saying that, it shouldn't replace the booking that was due to player who made the initial foul, was a few over the weekend where the perpetrator got away with a booking because the player getting fouled got booked.

I agree to a point but every foul is not a bookable offence and players will just have to accept the refs decision no matter what they think.

This makes such a huge difference.
It's like this in netball - a little bit of off the cuff human reaction and you'll get told "thanks X, I don't need your help". Do it again, you'll get a caution.

It's really hard to keep it in. But you have to. And it creates a respectful environment.
Umpires also recognise and admit they make mistakes and decisions are explained where needed so the player that feels aggrieved understands why a decision was made. They don't hide, and that creates a respect and understanding that not everything is perfect.
Similar to rugby.

Football is just both toxic and lacking ownership, preferring deflection and tribalism.

I can't believe they are even thinking of trying to reintegrate him. I suppose there is some stupid rule that means they have to as he hasn't been found guilty but seriously, you would've thought they would tell his agent to find him something far away from Manchester, as soon as they could!

Based on what though. Legally he's done nothing wrong. He wasn't even not found guilty, all charges were dropped. Unless they sell him, anything else is verging dangerously close to discrimination.

I'm not defending him, I'm just stating things purely from a legal perspective.
