Question since you seem to know more about track cycling then me. How come the best idividual sprinter is last in the team event? Hoy and Pendelton finish it off, but I would have thought the best individual sprinter would be the best starter

If the first guy goes off way quicker than the rest then there'll be a gap between the 1st and 2nd riders and the 2nd rider wouldn't get a slipstream. So they have to stay together more than anything else.
So the if the first guy is weaker he can go all out not drop the other 2. then the 2nd guy can go all out and not drop the last rider. Then he can go all out and win it.

Doesnt the most powerful guy go of first not necessarily the fastest as they need to generate speed quickly.

Comletely anihlated that, never in doubt.

How many golds are we expected to get at the Veledrome? Seems like we could have won all 4 events on today bar the DQ

So this Lochte guy - fudges up again.

Is he actually brick but just one of those one medal wonders? A bit like the Bentley of swimming.

It depends on the relative skills of the riders.

The top two women's sprinters are Pendleton and Meares, and I had this as one of the big showdowns of the Olympics (although now we have to ask about the Chinese). Meares took the lead out for Australia, while Pendleton took the finish for GB.

Its different skills. The ability to get up to speed from a standing start (the first rider) and the ability to finish fast once up to speed (the finisher) are different skills. I'd guess the former need more raw power.

Let me summarise the women's team sprint.

The GB team break the world record.
The China team break the world record.
The GB team win their race in one of the fastest times ever and get relegated and don't make the medal rounds.
The China team win the final and get relegated to silver.
Germany get gold despite not qualifying for the gold medal race or winning the gold medal race on the track.

Isn't there something wrong here?

Both teams were disqualified, or relegated, from the round they were in, meaning they finished last. China were in the final, so couldn't end lower than silver.

Yes I know.

I was highlighting the fact that the two teams that broke the world record both got relegated and neither won gold. Now one top team making a mistake could be just bad luck or a mistake. Both the top teams making the same mistake suggests the rules or implementation of the rules is an issue.

It's the same with relays in swimming or track and field. If the exchange isn't correct you get disqualified.

Phelps just beat Lochte in the 200m individual medley. Lochte had just completed the 200m backstroke so might have been a bit fatigued. Hat's off to Phelps, though - great race

Again I know that, although would add that the mechanics of the races are different. Usain Bolt doesn't have to run around the track behind his team-mates before finishing the relay.

The suspicious factor is that the two fastest teams can fall foul of the same rule in the same event. Are both teams inexperienced or incompetent? Technically the decisions may be correct, but something seems wrong with the rules. They had similar problems at the World Championships and were supposedly allowing the judges discretion (not necessarily a good idea) at the Olympics, yet end with similar problems.

He got done in the backstroke as well though, he seems like a strong swimmer but a bit of a nearly man in a lot of events.
