Pendleton started overtaking her team-mate too early, "outside the allowed zone", similar to the relay zone in track. Its more a technical infringement in cycling as she still had to ride the whole distance and to go further on her own, without being in the protective slipstream of her teammate.

What I don't understand is that the judges have said they can show discretion in the Olymoics, after being over-zealous at the world championships. If there is no discretion, then so be it, rules are rules, but this kind of close call seems what the discretion is there for. From a minimum silver to zero at the discretion of an official. They even call them commissaires, no wonder they are over-officious. At least the official can go home having had a major influence - the two fastest teams won't contest the gold.
 
So, those Chinese gymnasts are supposed to be 20 years old now since they had to be 16 to be allowed to compete in Beijing 4 years ago. Hmmm, not buying it.

Here is the image. Its technically correct but Pendelton is less than a wheel ahead while both are travelling at around 50kph. The margin for error is tiny.

Its a gift for the Australians in the bronze race. Instead of the Germans they get Ukraine. The joke is that faster teams like the Netherlands and France get overlooked.

It's tough, but to be fair it's right there in the photo, technically a good decision. We'd hope they could use 'discresion', but then the Germans and Ukranians would be complaining.

They got a sprint bronze last time.
The UCI is really trying to push cycling into China with the Tour of Beijing.
 
Wasn't expecting a World Record there.
There's a gold there for the taking that they werent expected to get beforehand.
 
The format in the veolodrome is quite confusing how they go from one event to the next and back again all the time.
