Euro 2020

Football is starting to realy depress me. I'm 59 and turn 60 in January next year and I've pretty much given up on the idea of England or Spurs winning anything of note in my remaining years. Thank GHod for the late 60s', early 70's and the early 80's that's all I can say. How must Kane be feeling now? How many losers medals has he got?

Just needs a runners up medal in the World Cup and he’ll have a clean sweep of runners up medals in the major competitions.

So many similarities between England and Tottenham. Glorious failure, empty cliches about “we’ll be back better and stronger than ever coz we’re still learning” and perennial disappointment.

We Go Again.

Where has that phrase suddenly appeared from? Seems like a couple of years ago no-one said it but now it's all over the place when it comes to footballers talking about the next game, the next time, the next opportunity for failure.

Precisely. So do you take off your midfielder who has been good on the ball, able to turn possession, draw fouls, or take off the player whose job it is to screen who doesn't really have ability on the ball? A brave manager takes off Philips and leaves Rice on. Or at least puts Grealish on instead of Rice to retain the ball and win some fouls. Instead, Southgate takes off Rice and puts on Henderson. As you say it wasn't the only mistake.

With the game to be won, how do you leave Rashford and Sancho off with Mount, Kane and Sterling dead on their feet.

Just my opinion, but Southgate was well prepared - did a great job their - but wasn't able to react to what was happening in the game and address it. A manager who would have would have seen a victory - imo.

The sub baffled me but maybe the thinking was “we’re getting tinkled on here, I need someone to break up the play” because bringing Grealish or some other offensive player on wouldn’t have been any use unless England got the ball. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t play Henderson in a million years, he’s dreadful on the ball.

I know this gets trotted out after every tournament but I was saying to my young lad when the Italians were pinging balls across the pitch “watch the first touch” and the Italian inevitably killed the ball stone dead. At one point my lad asked, “how did you know they’d do that.” After one of them, the ball got played to Mount and he trapped it further than I can kick it. There are a few water carriers still in the England squad.

First and foremost was the mindset of the English players after HT. Contrast the way we started the first to the second.

But then we needed to get possession. We'd intercept the ball and then hand it back to Italy. Very much like Mourinho-Spurs would. A lack of bravery from the manager second half. We needed players who are good on the ball to transition. Rice and Kane were successful at this first half.

I do credit Southgate for putting together a decent team. But he needs someone to manage the games. He had an assistant telling him what to do on the sideline, but not giving us fresh legs when we needed it, and all the other in-game decisions, left us wanting.

At least we can get back to Spurs now!

Are you expecting that to make things any better?

I seem to remember way back in history a manager being interviewed about winning a game after going down to ten men. Be subbed a defender and put a forward on. The interviewer said what on earth were you thinking and he replied I needed the opposition to be reacting to us and not the other way around. I needed to give them something to think about.

Both play in white too.

As the Spurs social media team would say…..”we go again on Thursday against Qarabag”

Watching Rashford take his stuttering run, trying to get the keeper to commit, made me think of what I heard on a podcast a while back, maybe the Crouch one, I can't remember. Anyway whatever the pod, and whoever the guest was, they were relating that when Germany (going back a few years) got to penalties in a tournament, each player was told which way to shoot. No leaving it to the player to decide, they were instructed to go low/high/left/right. The idea being it took some of the pressure off the player so execution was all they had to think about (not insignificant obviously) but no decision making in terms of which way to go.
