The Rebuild

I think you're more less saying what I am. The core of the best 11 is fine but then there's a lot of squad players who are very average
Which is actually the same for most teams in the league....

Our squad is two short at CB. One short in CM. One short at GK. Well enough stocked everywhere else.

Our biggest problem is that the coaching staff haven’t developed us a style of play and/or aren’t motivating enough of the players to give their all on the pitch.

Yes there is also some window dressing that could be added elsewhere in the squad but most of the players are better than 75% of the rest of the clubs in the league have.

I think you’re being generous. Lloris doesn’t seem to be the keeper he was, Dele hasn’t been very good for a couple of years except for the odd moment - yes it has to be taken into account he has been played out of position for some of that time and not featured as regularly but you don’t know if he will ever get back to those early levels - mentally I’m not convinced about him anymore. Bale has had a few good games against average opposition and is not getting any younger. We have a few very good first choice players, but as soon as we have to rely on a few of the squad players we get let down time and time again. I’m bored of hearing we have a very good squad, if the big players have an off day or don’t feature the squad players all too frequently don’t put their hands up to perform - they let Poch down and a lot of the same faces have done the same here.....

That sums up the place we are in well, Lloris, Dele, Bale, do not have it anymore ( at least not on a regular basis), there are also a few players who downed tools for Poch and after a initial rise in there performances when Jose first came have resorted to going through the motions again.

We really do need a overall change in a number of players and we all have are opinions on who they should be. Sadly we do not know just how much money we have to do that in the summer so i can not see us getting rid of as many players as we need too. That is one of the reasons we should sell Alli as at least we should/would get a decent price for him.

Rebuilt is too much. We are very weak in defense and everything starts from there, especially in a Mourinho squad. Mou has plenty of faults, but defending isn't one of them. So if he can't teach them how, nobody can. We need 2 top CB and a top RB(should have kept Walker). I would keep Reguilon as a starter and Toby and Sessegnon as squad players. We were linked with Skriniar and an out of contract Sergio Ramos etc, these are the type of players we need to be were we want.

At the end of the Sherwood era it was commonly thought that we needed to get rid of lazy players with big egos and bad attitudes like Vertonghen, Rose and Eriksen.

They were mostly from fans who thought their body language ( especially in Jan and Eriksen case) was showing they did not care. That was shown to be a stupid idea.

But in 210 minutes of football against two sides who on paper we were better than ( and had already beaten this season) we managed a single goal through a rabona. Truly abysmal.

So many of the players doing well this season are academy players. I really think we should just play them till the end of the season and no pressure but just see what he can do.

Some of our younger guys can certainly solve some of our problems this summer:

Skipp replaces Winks
Sessegnon replaces Davies
Tanganga replaces one of Aurier or Doherty

That raises about £40m for a really decent CB, lowers our wage bill, lowers the squad age and reduces our number of non-HG by 2

Honestly dont know what either player done to not be used more regularly - especially when Dier and Doherty have been getting minutes ahead of them
Have heard that Rodon had some perosnal issues but the guy who told me wouldn’t elaborate (Swansea mate from work)

On an evening like today, looking at the game as a whole rather than at the score, I believe we cannot deny that we face a major rebuild (although for the record, I think we still have a decent chance to finish 5th or even 4th). Anyway. The situation is 'better' than in March, because now Jose is gone, so we can really begin with a more or less clean slate. There are a few players who I hope are still part of the squad in, say, two years time: Kane, Son, Reguilon, Skipp, Sessegnon, Tanganga, probably Rodon. And a few question marks: Hojbjerg, NDombele, Moura, perhaps Lo Celso and Lloris. I don't think the rest are good enough, or young enough. And we need someone with an idea, a vision - whether that's a DoF or a top manager like Poch - because spending 40m on Sanchez, 30m on Sissoko, 30m on Lamela, 53m on NDombele, 60m (?) on Lo Celso once again simply isn't good enough.

As I see it there are two types of rebuilds. Even though I think Poch in 2014/15 did better than Redknapp in 2009/10 in almost every department, he was a little lucky with Kane coming through, and with Eriksen, Dembele and Vertonghen already on the books. What Levy and Redknapp did well was to make one signature signing (Modric) and one really fluky one (VDV) who together with Bale galvanised us. I hope that is the road we will follow this summer: one or maybe two marquee signings (a CB and Sabitzer perhaps?), and hoping that Skipp will hit the ground running and Hojbjerg or NDombele (or both) will come good. That would be a relatively painless (as in: only two season) rebuild. As I said in another thread, I think we need a manager with a reputation to survive the storms of next season, i.e. not Parker or Mason.

Sabitzer in for sisoako is a BIG upgrade
Add a Bissouma for maybe Tanguy or Gio and that’s a step in the right direction if we don’t fancy either
There are some solid CB options out there too that are very gettable

Centre backs x2 and Creative midfielder also new RB. That’s just a start need a couple windows at least to complete the overhaul we need.
