Next Manager?

I see you're sold on the idea. I wouldn't count our chickens yet. It looks rushed, highly unfair for the clubs not in it, and I don't even think the 12 clubs necessarily think it will occur. Just something to leverage a better deal. If ESL clubs are earning magga amounts more than the rest in their national leagues, it would destroy the leagues too. The UK government has pledged to stop it. It is not a fait accompli.

When does a manager become 'experienced' enough?
That’s the kicker
You have people who have seen what Poch did with 4 years experience and quickly forget that...
Yet managers with 10 years experience get written off as their not names
It’s an odd view IMO but very typical of the all or nothing set up in modern football

Said it before, ESL will require a manager with some experience
- 500M incoming means we need someone who can buy right players (DoF?)
- Competing against Real/Barca/etc. is not the place for on the job learning
Some experience I agree with, probably shouldn't go into the next season with Mason. But how much experience?

Who would you say have enough experience, and enough quality?

He wants an attack minded manager who develops young players yet hired Mourinho in the first place. Is he serious? [emoji28]

When it comes to football matters Teflon Don Levy once again comes across as clueless.

And when that doesn’t work he’ll go after Benitez.

Just look at their player recruitment and sales, and still improving season on season.
Ok
So they haven’t won anything
And haven’t really got near to winning anything
And their managers role in the things you highlight is minimal
He hasn’t even done 2 seasons there yet and has 5 (five) years management experience

Did he not fail Harry and Poch in the market?

That wasn't the point you were making though. You said managers were destined to fail under Levy. Three have been big successes overall under him.

For the record, I think he failed Poch big time in the market. I believed it then and I believe it now. On Harry, I think he more failed the club. Harry was hitching his skirt and was up in court at the time so I'd imagine Levy probably decided at that point that he wasn't for the long term. But we were fighting for the title and were just a bit shy in a couple of positions. To pick up an over the hill Ryan Nelson and crocked Louis Saha was poor from him. So yeah, Levy hasn't always covered himself in glory in that respect.

Right. Mourinho was experienced. But probably a far better manager when younger. With younger managers there can be greater hunger, they are not as wealthy and have everything to prove. So experience is not all that vital for me. If you know how to set a team up to win football matches, know how to be a psychologist and motivator, then you have the ingredients. How good you are at these things should determine whether you're a good manager, not your CV.

I broadly agree with what your saying, with one addition. The new manager's cv matters, because it matters to the players. It was clear that someone like Kane was impressed by Mourinho. That is important, especially at this junction, with all the talk of him leaving and the whole Super League drama. I do think that Nagelsmann is there or thereabouts in terms of reputation. Ironically, losing convincingly to Leipzig in the CL last year may help us now.

I think players - like everyone - are impressed by peoples actions. You might also be off-put by some slick-rick manager coming into your workplace like he's GHod himself (see Mourinho), and far more receptive to a manager who's on your level and wants to build a cohesive team spirit.

Yes, absolutely - and I'm pretty sure that our players remember being outplayed and outrun by Leipzig. But it's late April, and like every summer players are facing decisions. Will they stick around long enough to experience that cohesive team spirit?

And that in turn shows a bigger issue
I’ll use Potter again as reference...
He beat Pochs Tottenham side and also Jose’s side. Arguably that’s better than beating a weakened side in a bad period.
But Nagelsmann is the trendy progressive name, so if sells

I see your point that it's too easy to jump on the Nagelsmann bandwagon - and I agree in principle. But I think he might just combine the various elements we need in a manager. I was extremely impressed by Leipzig when they played us. He made someone like Angelino, the left-back, a much better player than he was at PSV and on the rare occasions that he played at City. He turned Werner and Sabitzer into top players. He dragged a non-glamorous club like Hoffenheim up the table, and even though most of this is a combination of speculation and hope, he might be just the right guy to integrate the likes of Skipp and Sessegnon into the team. He's educated, young, and ambitious, and Bayern (who have a very good eye for managers) apparently want him. It's a gamble, sure, but it's more than him just being trendy. And then there's the 'cv matters to the players' aspect too.

I think we were a weakened side in a bad period in those defeats against Brighton too.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a poorer performance, from any team ever, as that Brighton loss where Hugo broke his arm.
